Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...

Areas of dense fog early this morning will be followed by a
couple rounds of showers this morning into this evening in
association with a cold front...but not expecting a washout.
Mainly dry and seasonable weather follows this weekend, but
unsettled weather returns at times early next week with even bit
of snow possible for some locations Monday and/or Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...

* Areas of dense fog early this morning

310 am update...

Main issue early this morning continues to be widespread
fog some of which was dense along with areas of drizzle. This a
result of higher dewpoint air associated with an approaching
warm front over running the cooler boundary layer air at the
surface. We opted to issue a dense fog advisory for the entire
region.

Winds will begin to veer out ahead of the approaching cold front
by early to mid morning allowing visibility to gradually
improve. This will be a slower process across the Cape/Islands
given the high dewpoint air riding over the chilly ocean.
Therefore...issued the dense fog advisory through 8 am for
most locations...but extended it through 10 am for the Cape and
Islands. In fact...fog may linger through the afternoon across
this region so it is possible the dense fog advisory may need
to be extended longer.

Otherwise...the approaching cold front will increase the forcing
for ascent and result in some showers. These showers should
reach western MA/northern CT through 8 am and by late morning
across eastern MA/RI. Most locations should see an hour or two
of steady rain...but Pwats 3+ standard deviations above normal
may result in brief heavy showers in some locations. Other
scattered showers may also develop at times into the
afternoon...but not expecting the entire day to be a washout.

Despite mainly cloudy skies today...a mild start coupled with
surface winds turning southwest ahead of the cold front will
allow decent mixing. High temperatures should top out well into
the 50s to near 60 in most locations.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...

Tonight...

The cold front will be moving off the southeast New England
coast this evening...but until that happens some fog may linger
along the Cape/Islands. It also appears there may be one more
round of brief showers this evening in association with an
impressive mid level shortwave behind the cold front.
Otherwise...gusty northwest winds will result in cooler air
working back into the region and also allow skies to become
mostly clear by daybreak Saturday. Low temperatures will fall
back down into the 30s by this time as well.

Saturday...

Plenty of sunshine expected as a ridge of high pressure passes
south of the region. High temperatures should climb well into
the 50s in most locations.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Highlights...

* Dry and mild Saturday, then cooler Sunday/Monday
* Wet weather may return Tuesday/Wednesday

Overview...

29/12Z models are in decent agreement through this weekend,
then differ some with the handling of a few shortwaves moving
into the Pacific NW late this weekend. This in turn leads to
differences in the location of a persistent mid level cutoff
Near Hudson Bay. Overall, have moderate confidence in this
portion of the forecast. The timing of the mid week system is
more questionable, but still thinking we'll see a period of
showers. Will favor a consensus approach to smooth over the less
predictable details.

Saturday through Monday...

High pressure Saturday brings dry and mild weather with NW
winds becoming SW in the afternoon as this high pressure moves
offshore. Typical spring-time pattern with lower temperatures
along the immediate south coast, with higher temperatures
inland. Looking like near to above normal temperatures for
Saturday.

A northern stream shortwave and cold front move across the
region late Saturday night/early Sunday. While there should be
increasing moisture with this front, best forcing still expected
to remain to our north. Still expecting scattered showers late
Saturday night, especially towards NW MA. Showers may end as a
brief period of snow showers in the Berkshires.

High pressure returns to our region Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday...

Still appears like a period of unsettled weather mid week, but
only have moderate confidence in the details. Some light snow is
a possibility, especially if the timing works out where some of
the precipitation occurs at night.

Thursday...

High pressure starts to nudge into our region, but the center
should remain over the central Appalachians/Ohio Valley. Looking
drier, with below normal temperatures.

some of which will be dense early this morning. Improvement to
MVFR conditions late this morning or afternoon...except lower
cigs/vsbys persisting across the Cape/Islands. A period of
showers expected...particularly this morning.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence. MVFR to low end VFR this
evening, except IFR to LIFR conditions across the Cape/Islands
in low clouds and fog.  Another brief round of showers this
evening. Otherwise...improvement to VFR from west to east after
midnight. NW wind gusts of 20 to 30 knots behind the cold front.

Saturday...High confidence. VFR conditions.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. Areas of fog which
may be locally dense through about 11 or 12z. Improvement likely
thereafter as winds veer ahead of the cold front.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. Areas of fog which
may be locally dense through about 11 or 12z. Improvement likely
thereafter as winds veer ahead of the cold front.

Today...High confidence. South to southwest winds ahead of a
cold front should gust into the lower 20 knots at times. Long
southwest fetch will result in 3 to 7 foot seas across the
outer-waters. Areas of fog will be locally dense especially this
morning.

Tonight into Saturday...High confidence. Southwest winds will
shift to the northwest this evening behind a cold front. NW wind
gusts of 20 to 30 knots expected across all waters later this
evening into Saturday morning with decent mixing in the cold air
advection pattern. Small craft headlines posted for all waters.
Winds and seas will diminish Saturday afternoon as a ridge of
high pressure centered to our south weakens the pressure
gradient. Headlines probably will be able to come down across
most waters by mid afternoon Saturday.
