.SYNOPSIS...
Mainly dry but unseasonably cold weather is anticipated through
early next week. There is the potential for a Noreaster to
impact the region late Tuesday into Thursday...but there is low
confidence and it is not a certainty.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...

Scattered to broken fair weather clouds continue to move across
central and northern areas at 19Z, with more sunshine across
portions of N CT/RI/SE Mass as seen on latest observations and
GOES-East visible and IR satellite imagery. Still noting W-NW
wind gusts up to 25-35 mph, except at 38 mph at KACK at 19Z,
though fewer stations reporting gusts than was the case around
midday.

Winds will continue to diminish through this evening as the sun
sets and low level mixing decreases. However, could still see
some gusts up to 20 kt or so across the higher terrain as well
as outer Cape Cod and Nantucket.

Skies will average partly cloudy mainly S of the Mass Pike
tonight, while clouds linger across central and northern Mass
with continued W-NW flow around the large wind flow around the
surface storm and cutoff H5 low over Labrador this afternoon.
This will keep a W-NW wind flow in place, with periods of clouds
through the night, but it should remain dry.

Colder air will work in across the region tonight as H85 temps
fall to -9C to -11C after 09Z. Expect temps to bottom out mainly
in the 20s, except may fall to the upper teens across in inland
higher terrain. Along the immediate coast, lows will be in the
upper 20s to lower 30s. These readings are close to seasonal
normals for mid March.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Friday...
As another short wave clears across the region early Friday,
will continue to see H85 temps continue to fall though the core
of the cold will remain N of the region. H85 readings will
bottom out in the -12C to -14C range and H925 temps from -6C
to -8C Friday afternoon. So, with a mix of clouds and sun
especially across central and N Mass, along with the colder air
aloft, temps will not be quite as mild as there were today.
Expect readings to only top off in the upper 20s to around 30
across the higher terrain, ranging to 35-40 across the coastal
plain. Gusty W-NW winds return thanks to good low level lapse
rates and excellent mixing aloft, reaching 25-35 mph.

Friday night...
With a continued W-NW wind flow across the region, H85 temps
remain in the -12C to -14C range. Dry air will yield mostly
clear skies through around midnight, then clouds will increase
mainly across central and northern Mass. Another short wave with
another core of cold air (H85 temps down to -26C to -30C) works
SE in the continued long NW wind flow out of central Quebec.
Though the coldest air appears to remain across central and
northern New England, will still see a good chunk of it moving
across. NW winds will pick up again with gusts up to 25-40 mph,
highest across the higher terrain and along the immediate
coast.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights:

Details...

Saturday through Monday...

A couple pieces of northern stream energy will be diving
southeastward across far northern New England and the Canadian
Maritimes this weekend into Monday. The trough axis to our east
will keep us dry, except perhaps for a brief passing snow shower
or two with a cold front on Saturday. Otherwise...northwest
flow aloft and at the surface will result in dry but
unseasonably cold temperatures. High temperatures this weekend
into Monday will mainly be in the 30s. Lows generally in the
teens to lower 20s...but can not rule out some single digit
readings in the normally coldest spots of western MA with the
snowpack in place.

Tuesday through Thursday...

The potential for a Noreaster exists late Tue into Thu...but
there is low confidence and it is not a certainty that we will
be impacted. This potential event is 5 to 7 days in the future
so there is not much more to say at this point other than it
bears watching. As usual this will revolve around interaction
between several pieces of shortwave energy and their specific
timing/strength. All options remain on the table from a
complete whiff, to a wintry mix, or a late season significant
snowstorm. It will be at least a few more days until we will
have a better idea.
