.SYNOPSIS...
The powerful ocean storm will continue to pull further offshore
early this week. This will continue to bring gusty winds and
minor coastal flooding into today...but impacts will gradually
lessen. Some snow showers are likely especially across southeast
Massachusetts tonight into early Monday followed by a drying
trend with seasonable temperatures through Tuesday. A high
impact winter storm is possible Wed into early Thu with
significant snow and wind, then a trend toward drier but colder
weather follows later Thursday into Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1010 am update...
Distant ocean storm was slowly losing its grip on our region.
However...enough impacts for low level northeast flow/clouds
along with a few very light showers/sprinkles and gusty winds
along the southeast New England coast.
Overall...not too much change in the weather into mid afternoon.
An abundance of clouds continues with perhaps a few peeks of
sunshine. High temps will only rise a few more degrees...generally
between 40 and 45 degrees.
Impressive shortwave/closed 500 mb low pressure system will drop
southeast into western New England later this afternoon and
early evening. While moisture is limited with it enough
forcing/lift is available to trigger a few rain/snow showers
later this afternoon across the interior.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Tonight...
Cut-off low digs southward late today, spoke of energy will
move across coastal New England tonight. A bit more of a WAA
pattern in the wake of an inverted trough will help increase
lift and develop more widespread snow showers tonight. Locations
across the coastline will have the better chance for seeing
showers as they are closest to the piece of energy. Hi-res
guidance shows a bit of a coastal front developing esp across
Plymouth county so some enhancement of snow accumulation is
possible there. Temperatures during the overnight hours will
fall into the upper 20s to low 30s. This profile will be cold
enough to support snow as the main p-type.
When this is all said and done, we could see about a trace to a half
of an inch across the area. Higher amounts along the Worcester
Hills, close to 1-2 inches are possible thanks to the enhancement as
mentioned above. Also with the potential for coastal front, could
see amounts between 1-3 inches. This may result in a slick drive
overnight and linger into the early portion of the morning commute.
Monday...
Lingering showers are possible as offshore low continues to
retrograde. Still enough WAA as the low level moisture continues to
increase to keep showers over southeast MA, Cape and Islands. Aside
from the precip chances across the southeast, expect mainly cloudy
skies with dry weather out west. Winds will be on the increase once
again thanks to reinforcing wave. Northerly 925mb winds will
increase to 40-50 kts leading to gusts between 30-45 MPH. Wind
headlines may be needed once again on Nantucket.

Mon night...
Gusty NNE winds Mon evening diminish overnight as high pres builds
in from the west. This will support dry weather except across Cape
Cod and the Islands as moist NE flow combined with steep low level
lapse rates with 850 mb temps down to -10C, will likely see an
abundance of strato-cu clouds over southeast MA with spotty light
Ocean Effect Snow showers. Seasonably cold with lows in the 20s, low
30s in Boston, Cape Cod and Islands. Could be a bit colder across
the interior if winds decouple given mostly clear skies.
Tuesday...
Looks to be the pick of the week (relatively speaking) as short wave
ridging and corresponding high pres crest over the area, resulting
in light winds and at least partial sunshine. Seasonable
temperatures with highs in the low 40s except upper 30s high
terrain. However it will feel milder given light winds and at least
partial sunshine.
Wednesday into early Thursday...
Potential high impact winter/coastal storm this period as both
deterministic and ensembles are in remarkably good agreement. Both
datasets have a negatively tilted occluded sub 990 mb low tracking
somewhere between Nantucket and the 40N/70W benchmark, a favorable
track for heavy snow potential. Obviously with event still 96+ hrs
out, not expecting model guidance to verify exactly as is with
plenty of varying solutions/scenarios over the next few days.
However with jet energy for this system currently coming onshore to
CA this morning, would suspect 12z runs today to ingest better
observational data from upper air network and aircraft data. This
should result in some slight adjustments in 12z model
solutions/outcomes. As for 00z ensembles, both GEFS and ECENS have
up to 60% probs for 1+ inches of qpf. A deterministic blend from the
00z GFS and EC offers qpf values of 0.75 - 1.5 inches. Thus a high
impact winter qpf event likely.
Plenty of cold air on the front end for precip to begin as snow
across the entire region. However the rain-snow line will be
determined by the exact track of the mid level low and how quickly
it captures the surface circulation during the occlusion process,
something not known at this time range. In addition to significant
qpf ensembles showing strong wind potential (albeit not as severe as
this past storm) with 925 mb NE jet on the order of +3 standard
deviations from climo. Therefore looking at a winter storm with the
potential for blowing and drifting snow. Given both ensembles and
deterministic guidance have a strong signal for 1+ inch qpf event
combined with threat for strong winds, potential exist for a high
impact winter storm Wed into early Thu. Can't say much more than
that at this time range.
Thu afternoon/Fri/Sat...
Linger snow and wind early Thu should improve as occluded low lifts
northward and away from the region. However on the backside plenty
of chilly air overspreads the region. While daily high temps may
approach seasonal norms with highs 40-45, upper 30s high terrain, it
will feel considerably cooler given

Minor coastal flooding is likely along the south coast of Rhode
Island and the northeast Massachusetts coast for the mid-day
high tide. We did upgrade to a coastal flood warning south of
Boston...where NNE winds and a storm surge near or even above 2
feet may result in minor to pockets of low end moderate coastal
flooding. While not nearly as significant as the past few
days...this high tide may exacerbate issues that have occurred
over the past few days.
Large wave action continues across the waters as offshore
low continues to spin. In addition, southeasterly swell has
resulted in an increase in large waves for the south coastline
of Rhode Island. With the approaching high tides, expect a surge
1.5 to 2 feet which could result in flooding across the typical
low lying regions.
For the work week...Seas and surge will slowly subside into
early next week. The astronomical high tide will also be lower
going into next week. In fact, the tide will be low enough to
mitigate impacts from another, albeit probably more progressive,
nor'easter which may affect our region during mid week.
