.SYNOPSIS...
The powerful ocean storm will continue to pull further offshore
through early next week. This will continue to bring gusty winds
and coastal flooding into tonight and early tomorrow along the
eastern Massachusetts coast...but impacts will gradually lessen.
Some snow showers are likely especially across southeast
Massachusetts Sunday night into early Monday followed by drying
trend with seasonable temperatures through Tuesday. Two areas of
low pressure, one over the Great Lakes and secondary low south
of New England may bring periods of snow and/or rain to the
region Tuesday night through Thursday. Then a trend toward drier
but colder weather follows Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

130 AM Update...

Trend in the forecast remains on track for this tonight. Enough
onshore flow and moisture has triggered sct showers across
southeast MA.  Temperatures are in the low 40s so p-type looks
to remain all rain, but cannot rule out a few flakes. No
accumulations are expected.

Previous discussion below...

Otherwise...moist low level northeast flow will result in few
rain/snow showers at times across southeast New England but no
accums expected other than perhaps a dusting on the grass.
Across the rest of the region...mainly dry weather should
prevail with low temperatures in the 30s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Sunday...

An abundance of clouds are expected again on Sunday....but should
see some peeks of sunshine especially inland from the coast. It
still will be quite breezy across the Cape/Islands but the downward
trend in winds will continue. Northerly wind gusts between 30 and 35
mph are expected across this region and perhaps around 40 mph across
Nantucket.  A few rain/snow showers will be possible across eastern
New England at times with some land/sea interface and ocean
enhancement with 850T near -9C.  In addition...approaching shortwave
from the northwest will probably allow for a few rain/snow showers
to also develop during the afternoon across the interior.  High
temps across the region will mainly be in the upper 30s to the lower
40s.

Sunday night...

Closed 500 mb low and impressive shortwave energy will dive
southeastward across western New England Sunday evening.  This may
induce a brief inverted trough like feature from our distant ocean
storm.  The result should be scattered snow showers at times Sunday
night.  Some minor snow accums will be possible...generally between
at a coating to perhaps up to 2 inches.  The best chance of higher
accums may occur across parts of southeast MA as a result of some
land sea interface/ocean enhancement with 850T near -9C.  May also
see some of this occur in the higher elevations.  Regardless...just
looking at some minor snow accumulations.

Overview and model preferences...
A very complex series of vortices/cutoff highs as well as their
attendant troughs/ridges to begin the week at H5. The dominant
retrograding block, which helped with the impacts from this
weekend's event, continues to retrograde, however we are seeing
a gradual pattern breakdown, with lower overall less
amplification. This is evident looking at the H5 height
anomalies, which continue to drop in magnitude. The two features
to watch most closely, as they will ultimately define the storm
track for a developing coastal low pres mid week, are a vortex
resting along the PACNW coastline, and a Hudson bay vortex as
the Labrador block breaks down may allow looks to phase with the
former. This is a tricky scenario, as it involves a complex
Fujiwhara of the cutoff remnants of the current storm as well.
Stony Brook sensitivity plots suggest these two features will
not be better sampled for another 12-24 hours, so will lean most
heavily on ensembles to take into account the wide range of
possible tracks. While there is definitely evidence to support
enough cold air for snow somewhere, the haves and have-nots will
still take time as the track will ultimately define the thermal
profiles.

Mon...
Lingering impacts from a weak inverted trof will begin to shift
offshore early Mon, so leftover SHSN should dissipate as drier
air moves in thanks to stronger subsidence inversion associated
with 1025hPa high pres near the Great Lakes. Clearing occurs
with this as well. H92 temps settle around -3C, which with full
mixing should still allow highs to reach the upper 30s and low
40s.

Tue and Tue night...
As upper lvl blocking ridge continues to break down, the sfc
high pres begins to weaken with time as it crests across New
England. However, with its influence, mainly dry conditions are
expected. H92 temps remain near -3C, so expecting similar temps
on Tue to Mon, mainly the low-mid 40s after a cool start with
several locations in the 20s early Tue morning. The precip
should hold off Tue night given the subsidence inversion
remaining in place, but increasing clouds Tue night mins should
be a bit milder, mainly in the upper 20s and low 30s.

Wed and Thu...
Another merger of Pacific energy and arctic wave from Hudson
Bay. Parent low pres near the Great Lakes will lead to another
energy transfer, with low pres developing off the mid-Atlantic,
and quickly deepening as it approaches the S New England
coastline. The ultimate track will dictate thermal profiles, as
ensemble tracks range from well S of the 40/70 benchmark, to
well inland, as far W as the Hudson Valley. There is a rough
clustering just inside the 40/70 benchmark, close to the
Cape/Islands. Deterministic CMC/GFS/ECMWF are close, but still
have as much as 50 miles difference between. Using the ensemble
mean along with a little weight from the 03.12Z deterministic
runs, will lean thermal profiles/moisture toward this trend.
However, will likely see better solution convergence once the
energy is better sampled.

Overall, low lvl thermal profiles are cold enough to begin as
SN most everywhere except maybe the Islands, however as the low
pres makes its closest track a warming change, particularly
along the E third is possible. PWATs are somewhat low, averaging
near 0.75in, or only 1 std deviation above normal. However,
early indicators do show the possibility of a closed H7 low
(banding) and decent LLJ 50-60kt. However, the track will
determine these as well. In summary, there are indicators that
suggest at least advisory, if not warning level snowfall,
primarily for the interior, with a mix further E before a
potential change to all rain if the track shifts to the W as
suggested by some ensemble members and today's deterministic
runs. Stay tuned for totals as the players are sampled better
and guidance converges on a track.

Fri into Sat...
Although there is a trend toward less blocking, with NAO/AO
pushing ever closer to neutral, lingering effects will still be
felt. The coastal low will pivot into the Maritime region, with
blustery NW flow lingering into Fri even as drier air builds in.
High pres looks to finally return in full control by the
weekend.

redevelop across many open waters with a shortwave/inverted trough
feature.  Seas will remain between 11 and 17 feet across the eastern
outer-waters.

.HYDROLOGY...
While coastal flooding is one of the main threats with this
system, we will also have to keep a close eye on the river
flooding aspect. Many streams are flowing above to well above
normal for this time of year, due to mild weather which melted
any snow pack and a steady feed of rain events during the month
of February.

A wide spread 2 to 4 inches of rain fell across eastern
Massachusetts and much of Rhode Island over the past 24 hours.
This rainfall caused several of the regions small rivers and
streams to reach bankfull or crest just above flood stage. This
water is now flowing into the mainstem rivers. several rivers in
Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts are either in flood or
are expected to go above flood stage. River Forecast points
that have already exceeded flood stage are the Taunton River in
Bridgewater Massachusetts, the Pawtuxet river in Cranston Rhode
Island, the Wood River at Hope Valley Rhode Island and the
Pawcatuck River in Westerly Rhode Island. The Pawcatuck River at
Wood River Junction is expected to reach minor flood later
today.

The majority of the main stem rivers are expected to reach crest
in the next 12 to 36 hours.

In addition...due to the extent of storm surge expected with the
midday Friday, Friday night and Saturday high tides, salt water but
will likely elevate river levels along tidally affected rivers
and streams, and could result in flooding away from the
immediate shoreline. This could occur along some east coastal MA
rivers.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
* Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect through tonight for
  most of east coastal Massachusetts. A Coastal Flood Advisory
  is in effect for the City of Boston.

Minor to moderate coastal flooding is anticipated for tonight's
high tide along east coastal Massachusetts. Impacts will
probably be closer to the minor end from Boston north and closer
to the moderate end south of Boston. There will be a long
period lingering swell resulting in large breakers along the
ocean exposed coast during tonight's high tide. As of 430 PM,
the buoys off the coast were still measuring 20 to 25 foot
waves. We think these will be slow to subside tonight. As far as
the surge, we're anticipating 2 to 2.5 feet north of Boston and
2.5 to around 3 feet south of Boston. Another factor to
consider tonight is that we believe there are still flooded
areas both south and north of Boston where the water has been
slow to drain from prior tides. Also, portions of our coastline
have become more vulnerable due to the prior high tides. For
these reasons, we opted to continue the Coastal Flood Warning
north of Boston even though the predicted high tide would
normally yield mostly minor impacts there.

We will continue to experience erosion with the next high tide
along ocean exposed shorelines due to the surf from those long
period swells on top of elevated water levels.

Looking further ahead, we may have lingering splashover or minor
coastal flooding along some of the eastern Massachusetts
coast for the Sunday afternoon high tide. A Coastal Flood
Advisory may be needed along portions of the coastline for that
high tide. Seas and surge will slowly subside into early next
week. The astronomical high tide will also be lower going into
next week. In fact, the tide will be low enough to mitigate
impacts from another, albeit probably more progressive,
nor'easter which may affect our region during mid week.
