.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves south of the region today as a cold front
approaches, accompanied by scattered snow showers. Large high
pressure will build across the eastern seaboard through
Thursday, with moderating temperatures Thursday and Friday as
the high moves offshore. Another cold front will slowly approach
late Friday into the upcoming weekend. Low pressure developing
along this front may bring periods of heavy rain as it passes to
our west. Colder drier weather returns on Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1 PM Update...

Snow Showers...

Lots of low level dry air remaining in place across the region
this afternoon with dew pt depressions on the order of 20-25
degs. This will initially erode the snow showers to virga as
they enter the region. Hi Res models picking up on this as some
of the guidance doesn/t have any measurable qpf across eastern
and northeastern MA thru this evening. In addition system is
moving rapidly with model soundings only showing about an hour
or two of saturation thru the column. Hi Res guidance also in
agreement with model reflectivity only lasting about an hr at
any given location. Thus only expecting a trace to perhaps a 0.5
inch of snowfall thru this evening. Also with temps AOA
freezing this afternoon and early evening along with light
precip not achieving wet bulb temps, main roads in RI and
eastern MA likely will remain wet. Farther inland temps will be
below freezing but again given qpf less than a tenth of an inch,
only expecting a coating to a half inch of snowfall at most.

Winds...

Low level 50 kt 925 mb southwest jet over the region this
afternoon and early evening. SW surface winds will continue to
gust up to 30 mph or so thru this time. This low level WAA will
continue to warm temps into the 30s except low 40s MVY and ACK.
Big improvement from previous days.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...

After Midnight...

Cold front will swing through switching the winds to a more westerly
direction. Behind the front, clouds will slowly clear out as
temperatures begin to fall into the low to mid 20s. Still warmer than
what we experienced over the weekend. There is the potential for
some patchy black ice.

Tuesday...

Upper level trough axis will swing through on Tuesday allowing for a
850mb cold front to pass through. High pressure behind the front
will allow for clouds to clear out and temperatures to rise into the
mid 30s to low 40s. Still a tight pressure gradient in the NW flow
so anticipate breezy conditions to prevail.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Big Picture...

Zonal northern stream through midweek. Southern stream brings a
closed low ashore in California on Tuesday, which moves to the
Southern Plains Wednesday night. The low opens up into a trough
digging over the Plains, while a high pressure ridge builds over the
West Atlantic. As a result, the zonal flow over New England breaks
down, replaced by a broad mild southwest flow aloft. Shortwave
ejects from the base of the Plains trough and moves up the
Appalachians over the weekend. The ECMWF maintains a primary low
that moves up through the Eastern Great Lakes, while the GFS moves
the surface low farther east through Northern New England.

Contour heights are above normal Wednesday through Saturday, then
lower than normal Sunday. Thus a mild mid to late week with a
cooling trend over the weekend.

Model upper contour fields are in general agreement through Friday,
with disagreement on the details of the ejecting shortwave next
weekend. MSLP fields differ by next weekend with the GGEM pushing a
cold front south of New England, the GFS brings it over Southern New
England, and the ECMWF keeps it north of us. Thermal fields show a
similar disagreement next weekend regarding the southward extent of
cold air on Saturday. This has implications for precip type at that
time. Confidence in the forecast is high through Thursday, moderate
Friday, then low-moderate for Saturday and Sunday.

Details...

Tuesday night-Wednesday...

High pressure builds over the region Tuesday night with pressure
gradient and winds becoming light. Mid and high level moisture
fields show increasing values Wednesday, so likely some increasing
cirrus and possibly a few mid-level clouds. This would be in
connection with the returning milder air.

With dew points 8 to 18 and radiational cooling, expect min sfc
temps in the teens with low 20s South Coast. Shallow mixing
Wednesday due to the warm advection aloft and resulting inversion,
but enough mixing to support max sfc temps in the 30s.

Wednesday night-Thursday...

Increasing moisture below 700 mb but with a dry layer just above
that. ECMWF is slowest with this increase and suggest a partly
cloudy period while the GFS is mostly cloudy. Jet dynamics remain
weak, with little synoptic lift indicated most of this period. Model
data brings limited light pcpn during Thursday, even without the
upper support. Of course this can occur in a mild flow at this time
of year. But the onset seems rushed considering the strength of the
West Atlantic upper ridge over Southern New England through the
evening, as well as the position of the upper jet so far to the west
over the Great Lakes.

Expect an increase in sky cover through Thursday, averaging partly
cloudy in the east and mostly cloudy in the west. Much of the period
will be dry, but we will show chance pops in the west late Thursday
afternoon. Warm advection will limit the amount of cooling Wednesday
night, so min temps expected about 25-35.  Warm advection and clouds
will also limit the depth of any mixing on Thursday, but low level
temps suggest max sfc values in the 40s and possibly around 50.

Thursday night through Sunday...

Ejecting shortwave over the Plains generates surface low over
the Gulf of Mexico which moves north along a cold front over the
Midwest. This along with the increasing southerly flow up the
coast and precip water values climbing to 1.4 to 1.7 inches all
suggest a wet period starting Thursday night and continuing into
Saturday. Periods of heavy rain are possible during this time.
There continues to be concern about a part of the cold front
slipping south through Northern New England Friday...will it
reach Southern New England by Saturday morning? The synoptic
pattern does not suggest this, but we will continue to monitor
this as it could affect the precip type for Saturday.

We will feature likely pops for rain Thursday night through Friday
night, then lingering chance pops Saturday. Ptype will be mainly
rain, although some mix with snow is possible as the precip tapers
off Saturday.

Drier colder air moves in on the northwest winds trailing the system
on Sunday.

VFR but trending toward MVFR cigs 21z-00z from west to east in
scattered snow showers. Any snow accumulations limited to a
trace to less than inch. Then improving after 00z to VFR from
west to east. Gusty SW winds 15-25G30kt gradually shifting to
west overnight and not as gusty. High confidence.

Tuesday and Tuesday night...High confidence.

VFR, dry and gusty west winds up to 30 kt, then diminishing Tue
night and becoming NW.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Spotty light snow
showers 5 pm to 8 pm with little if any accumulation. Brief
period of MVFR cigs during this time.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Scattered light snow
showers 3 pm to 6 pm along with brief MVFR during this time.
Then rapidly improving to VFR. Snow accumulations from a coating
to less than an inch.

Wednesday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR cigs possible.

Light snow will move through western and central Massachusetts,
as well as northern Connecticut through late afternoon. It may
begin as a brief period of light freezing rain, which could
produce icy spots on roads, especially bridges and overpasses.
