.SYNOPSIS...
Mild today with rain everywhere overnight. Dry but much colder
weather returns late Friday into Saturday. A fast moving low
pressure system may bring accumulating snow to portions of the
region Saturday night into Sunday morning. Above normal
temperatures will quickly return early next week along with the
risk for some showers.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
A nearly stationary boundary continues to provide a focus for a
modest frontal wave this morning. Given the strongest
baroclinicity rests closer to the S coast, and low-mid lvl
moisture flux is W-E parallel to the mid lvl flow, this has kept
the bulk of the precip associated with the wave mainly S of the
Mass Pike, and this will be the case as it rapidly ends by about
12Z (7am local). However, there is one other issue at hand,
given that the early half of the overnight was mostly clear,
some decoupling allowed temps to drop below freezing before
precip onset around 06Z, and therefore localized light FZRA is
occurring but should be ending over the next few hours. The
location this seems to overlap most, based on meso-west data is
along the Mass Pike corridor of SW MA, so will issue SPS for
the localized ice risk.

Even though precipitation ends early, WAA following the wave
passage is enhanced, allowing H92 temps to warm to near +10C
while H85 remains +4C. However, at the same time as WAA
continues, so does moisture flux, with PWATs by 00Z about 3 std
deviations above normal. This is likely to manifest as low
clouds early, trapped beneath the inversion developing.
Therefore, in spite of the low lvl warming, mixing is likely to
remain limited through the day unless any breaks are observed.
In fact, have highs slightly below previous progs given temps
this morning are cooler than initially forecast. In spite of
this, highs will still be 15-20F warmer than seasonable normals,
mainly in the 60s, but shy of the record highs.

The low clouds and warm moist airmass will lead to another
impact, particularly through the morning. Following the wave
passage, sfc dwpts should increase to the upper 30s and low 40s,
which is near/above SSTs along the S coast. Given S-SW flow
continuing, this could lead to localized dense fog, especially
across CT/RI and SE MA which may require advisories.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Overnight into Fri AM...
A stronger slightly more acute wave will slide E from the Great
Lakes, attendant to sfc cold frontal passage late. Given high
PWATS, around 1.10 inches or nearly 4 std deviations above
normal, will likely see more widespread RA during the overnight
with this wave passage/fropa. Given the fact that this will be
associated with a sfc convergent boundary and high PWATs
(K-values exceed 30 as well) rain could be heavy enhanced by
SLIs near 0 and high TTs. Will also include a very low risk for
TS, mainly across the S coast where these convective indices are
highest. Widespread QPF is mainly between 0.25-0.50, mainly
because the overall system/wave is progressive. However, given
the factors suggesting brief heavier downpours, would not be
surprised if localized spots exceed reach 0.50-1.00. Overall, a
mild wet night for Feb standards. Rain should gradually end from
NW-SE after sunrise, as drier air W winds push in from the W.

Remainder of Fri...
Dry air and CAA follow the cold frontal passage. This will allow
drier air and clearing through the day. The coldest airmass
lags, so highs, especially with afternoon sunshine will remain
mild, in the 40s-50s. Given these anomalously warm sfc temps,
afternoon mixing should also easily tap strong westerlies 30-40
kt at H92, yielding windy conditions through the afternoon.

Details...

Friday...

Widespread showers along and ahead of approaching cold front
during the morning hours. Unseasonably mild to start the day
with strong low level WAA boosting 925 mb temps up to +10C to
+12C across RI and southeast MA 12z Fri. This should result in
50s to start the day Fri along with dew pts near 50 before the
fropa. Fropa occurs late morning-midday followed by a drying
trend for the afternoon along with column drying out
sufficiently for some sunshine before sunset. Cold air lags well
behind the front. This combined with good blyr mixing via NW
downslope post frontal winds, temps should rise a few more degs
late morning into the early afternoon for highs to top out in
the low to mid 50s before cooling off late in the day as CAA
increases.

Friday night and Saturday...

Modest CAA with 850 mb and 925 mb temps both around -8C at 12z
Sat, about -1 standard deviation colder than climo. Blustery NW
winds Fri night will add to the chilly conditions. However by
Sat 1032 mb high crests over the region so it won't feel as
cold given lots of sunshine and light winds. Although clouds
will be on the increase late in the day from west to east.
Overall very pleasant for mid to late Feb.

Saturday night and Sunday...

So short wave trough Fri/Fri night erodes southeast subtropical
ridge briefly and suppresses storm track/baroclinic zone south
of New England. This sets the stage for trailing short wave to
spun low pres and track south of New England Sat night. It
remains an open wave so its very progressive with precip ending
Sunday morning. Given airmass over New England is marginally
cold enough to support snow, if the wave tracks too close to
the coast snow could mix or changeover to rain along the south
coast and possibly to the Mass Pike or so. Conversely if the
wave tracks farther south ptype could remain all snow with a
plowable snow event possible for much of the region. A third
possible outcome would be the wave is too weak and tracks too
far offshore for much if any precip. 12z ECMWF/GFS and UKMET
support all three of these scenarios. More importantly the 12z
GEFS and Euro ensembles show lots of spread with some support
for all three different scenarios. Thus given the time range
here (Day 4) a model blend is probably the most skillful
approach rather than chase individual deterministic runs. A
model blend yields qpf ranging from 0.20 to 0.50 inches.

Models do agree that the bulk of the precip falls Sat night into
early Sunday morning. This should reduce impact given the
timing.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday...

Good model agreement that the southeast subtropical ridge re-
emerges but the GFS, Euro and its ensembles differ on the
amplitude of the ridge. The Euro and its ensembles offer higher
amplitude, thus warmer and drier. While the GFS and its
ensembles are less amplified (however still mild) with frontal
boundary nearby suggesting higher chance for showers. Given the
time range and uncertainty followed a model blend here.

VFR (except ACK, which will remain IFR/LIFR) through 07Z, with
MVFR/IFR conditions in rain and fog mainly S of the Pike through
11Z. After this the rain will likely be replaced by fog, with
IFR vsbys/CIGS possible mainly S of a line from BDL-PYM.
Further N, mainly VFR through this period, although occasional
MVFR CIGS possible.

17Z - 03Z...
Mainly VFR N of the BDL-PYM line with a mix of MVFR CIGS S of
this line. Occasional BR mainly S of the line as well.

03Z tonight through 10Z Fri...
Widespread light-mod RA. Mainly IFR CIGS, MVFR VSBYs with the
RA/FOG. Winds shift to the W early AM.

Fri daytime...
Lingering early AM RA/BR dissipates after sunrise. This allows
IFR/MVFR conditions to gradually shift to VFR all terminals
through the day. W winds gust 25-30 kt during the afternoon.

KBOS Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. Main issue is the
possibility of some brief MVFR conditions this morning.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate confidence in TAF. Brief period of
MVFR/IFR conditions possible this morning in both SHRA/BR.

night and be over by daybreak Sunday. The timing should limit the
impact to travel...but there is a low risk for isolated power
outages if higher amounts are realized and a swath of 6+ inches
impacts the coastal plain.
