.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds across New England tonight and will be
accompanied by dry but seasonably cold weather. Low pressure
races across the coast of southern New England Wed bringing a
wintry mix of snow and ice inland, with snow to rain closer to
the coast. Cold, blustery and dry weather returns Thursday but
more snow is possible late Fri and Fri night. Low pressure
likely tracks inland this weekend yielding milder weather along
with periods of rain.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...

4 PM Update...

Remainder of this afternoon...

Dry frontal passage early this evening with just a change in
wind direction from SW to NW then NE late tonight. Frontal
boundary is currently across the Catskills of NY into the
Poconos of eastern PA, and will continue to move east. Behind
the frontal passage high pressure advects across northern NY and
New England tonight with 1036 mb high settling over New
Brunswick by 12z/7am Wed.

This evolution will provide dry weather tonight along with
light winds. Mid clouds over CT/RI and eastern MA at 330 pm will
slide offshore this evening. This will provide good radiational
cooling conditions overnight. Thus have followed the colder MOS
guid for mins tonight, which turn out to be very close to
normal for early Feb with lows in the teens, low 20s for the
urban areas including Cape Cod and Islands. Could see a few
single digits across northwest MA.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...

Wednesday...

Model Overview and Preferences...

NAM and Hi Res guidance (ARW-NMM-HREF) offers warmest mid level
warming given stronger mid level jet (90kt at 850 mb!). This
results in a storm track northwest of I-95 with snow turning
over to sleet and freezing rain quicker inland and snow to rain
quicker as well closer to the coast. However the GFS and EC are
less robust with mid level jet and associated warming. This
yields a storm track closer to the coastline (Low tracking into
Buzzards Bay-CC canal) which fits climo better. Furthermore,
with 1036 mb high over New Brunswick initially provides cold air
damming down the coastal plain. This provides best low level
baroclinicity along the south coast and supports a storm track
into Buzzards Bay/CC canal. So given there is still model spread
especially in thermal fields and still 24+ hrs out in model
time, decided to follow a model blend but hedging toward the
colder/snowier GFS/EC solution. As mentioned above given still
24+ hrs out in model time expect at least minor changes to later
forecast with respect to snow and ice predictions.

Onset of Snow and Intensity...

Good model agreement on snow overspreading the region between 9
am to noon from west to east. Guidance suggest a period of
moderate to heavy snow is possible from about 11 am to 3 pm
across western and northern MA with an inch per hour possible.
So morning commute looks dry especially across RI and eastern MA
with snow beginning in Hartford and Springfield between 9 am and
10 am. Also heaviest snowfall likely over before late day
commute begins. However will have to contend with ice across the
interior mid to late afternoon.

Ptype...

A model blend offers a fairly quick changeover along the south
coast from snow to sleet to rain by midday. Then snow changing
to snow, sleet and then rain from about noon to 3 pm across the
Boston to Providence corridor. Same timeline for greater
Hartford area but will have a period of freezing rain/ice from
roughly 3 pm to 5 pm. Then farther inland across western-central
MA, snow will begin to mix with sleet and freezing rain
beginning in the early afternoon and may remain all snow over
northwest MA.

Snow Totals...

South coast...less than an inch.

Boston to Providence...1-4" with highest amounts Greater Boston

Greater Hartford...2-4" followed by a period of light icing

Western-central MA...4-8" followed by a period of moderate
icing

These amounts of snow and ice hinge on how 00z model trends.
Colder GFS/EC supports more snow while warmer NAM and Hi Res
guid supports less snow but more ice. Thus our probabilistic
snow graphics are probably more meaningful given model
spread/uncertainty.

Heavy Rainfall...

Most of the snowfall will wash away in the Boston to Providence
corridor with periods of heavy rain to follow later in the day.
This will impact the late day commute in this region.

Wed night...

Strong low level jet moves across the south coast and islands.
Risk of strong winds will be in warm sector but if storm tracks
along the south coast into Buzzards Bay/CC canal warm sector
will get shunted offshore. Also model soundings are very
inverted along the south coast, precluding strong winds aloft
from reaching the surface. May hit wind advisory criteria on
sustained speeds of 31 mph or greater. However confidence too
low to issue a 3rd period wind advisory.

Evening precip quickly comes to an end as low pres races across
the Gulf of Maine into Nova Scotia. Dry air advects across the
area overnight on gusty NW winds.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Highlights...

Overview...

Active weather pattern remains for the extended. Broad upper level
troughing will continue between two ridges, one anchored over the
east Pacific while the other remains east of the Bahamas. This
general pattern keeps southern New England on the more active side
as upper level shortwaves moving through the flow will cross the
region. Still a lot of uncertainty on type of precip and thermals
as it is all dependent on where the baroclinic zone will set-up,
especially behind the system on Wed. Either way, wintry precip looks
to remain in the forecast for Friday and even a portions of the
weekend, before mid-level ridging builds.

Details...

Thursday and Friday...Moderate confidence.

Arctic front will push through behind the departing system resulting
in gusty northwest winds and a few LES streamers, if they can make
it over the Berks. Temperature will once again follow a nondiurnal
trend and remain steady and or fall during the day. Otherwise expect
mainly dry weather with mostly clear skies.

High pressure will pass south of the area late Thursday into Friday.
This will help temperatures begin to radiate, however high level
clouds moving in during the later half of the night may stall temps
from truly bottoming out.

This high pressure will push a baroclinic zone across the upper
Midwest and into the Northeast. If this high shifts any farther
northward then the baroclinic zone will also move north, and vice
versa. Quick moving shortwave out of southern Canada will be enough
to trigger some light snow showers along this stalled frontal
system. Not expecting to much in the way of accums, around an inch
or less. Still something to watch as it only takes an inch or make
travel slippery.

Saturday...Moderate confidence.

High pressure will return to the region thanks to weak ridging as
subtropical high begins to strengthen. This will result in some weak
WAA and push temperatures back into the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Saturday night and beyond...Moderate confidence.

Confidence is increasing in active weather during this time period
which is supported by both the deterministic and ensemble models.
Split flow regime appears to be taking shape with the northern wave
moving in from Canada and southern stream from the Gulf. The
question of phasing comes into question and if they do how close to
New England will this occur. Southwest flow ahead of the waves will
increase moisture resulting in high PWATS. Still a lot of details
need to be worked out such as track, strength and timing. So for now
this is a period to watch during the upcoming week.
