.SYNOPSIS...
A departing cold front ushers in a chilly airmass across the
region tonight with temperatures falling into the 20s
regionwide, along with a gusty northwest wind this evening.
High pressure builds into the area Sunday providing a dry
pleasant winter day along with light winds. A clipper type low
brings periods of light snow to the region late Sunday night
into Monday with a coating to perhaps 2 inches possible. High
pressure then provides dry, seasonably cold conditions
Christmas Day through Thursday. Low pressure will track to the
Great Lakes late Thursday into Friday, which will likely bring
showers and milder conditions for southern New England.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
10pm update...

A very weak shortwave has allowed for the maintenance of low
cloud shield across the region, but as it exits NE, the W
component of the flow will disconnect it from lake moisture and
allow the downsloping to prevail. Expecting gradual transition
to SKC conditions as a result. Pres gradient remains strong
enough much of the night however, able to mitigate radiational
cooling until the earl AM. Still, will lean on slightly colder
guidance at this time given current trends. Otherwise, forecast
is on track.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/...
330 PM update...

Sunday...

Ridge axis builds across the region so modest NW winds in the
morning will diminish during the afternoon. Afternoon highs will
climb to 35-40, which is right on target for late Dec. It will
be very pleasant given mostly sunny conditions and light
afternoon winds.

Sunday night...

Short wave trough currently moving across CO approaches southern
New England from the southwest. Warm advection snows overspread
the area from west to east. Column and surface temps both cold
enough to support all snow. Temps may fall quickly after sunset
given light winds and mostly clear skies but then level off
later in the evening as clouds increase and lower. Other than
the immediate south coast, surface temps are at or below
freezing, so roads could be snow covered by daybreak Monday
especially western CT/MA given earlier onset time.

Monday...

Lead short wave begins to form low pressure over Georges Bank
Monday morning. However fast flow aloft could yield a break in
the snow/precip shield around midday, as potent upstream
secondary short wave serves as a kicker to lead short wave
during the morning. This could be why model guidance only
offering chance POPs? However trailing short wave is potent
with strong forcing for ascent and is reflected by an inverted
trough extending westward from Georges Bank low back into New
England. Could be a band of somewhat steadier/heavier snow
showers along this trough axis where convergence is maximized.
However at this time range it's impossible to say with any
certainty where this mesoscale feature will setup and then how
it will traverse.

All models agree on widespread measurable qpf with up to a
tenth or two. Thus a coating to an inch is likely with possibly
up to 2 inches in spots but way too early to say where heavier
totals fall. Snow growth doesn't look very good with only modest
lift and located above the DGZ /-10C to -20C/. Thus not looking
like an over performing event but need to watch where that
inverted trough sets up, that could be a wildcard. Otherwise
with marginal surface temps during the day Monday and precip
intensity light, likely not a major impact on road conditions
and may turn out to be more of a decorative snowfall.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights...

* Leftover light snow on Christmas Eve across eastern areas
* High pressure brings dry conditions and close to seasonal
  temps through Thursday
* Low pressure passes well W of the region, but could see light
  rain move in late next week with moderating temperatures

Overview...

12Z medium range models signaling a broad nearly zonal mid
level steering flow across the lower 48 through the middle of
next week. An H5 long wave trough then digs across late Wed
through late next week across the E slopes of the Rockies into
the western Plains states. A responding ridge builds across the
Great Lakes then works slowly E to the eastern seaboard by
around Thu night into Fri night. In the meantime, will likely
see unsettled weather move in Thu night through Fri night as
strong low pressure passes across the Great Lakes.

With the zonal flow in place early this week, temperatures
should run close to seasonal normals. With the building ridge
and rising H5 heights, readings will rise well above normal by
Friday, which looks to continue into Saturday.

Details...

Monday night through Thursday...

Any leftover precip across east coastal areas Mon evening
should push offshore as the mid level short wave exits Mon
night. W-NW wind flow takes over by Tuesday as large N-S
oriented high pressure builds across the eastern seaboard. Will
likely see dry conditions with temperatures running close to or
a bit below seasonal levels.

The high will push offshore Wed night and Thu, but dry
conditions should continue. Clouds will begin to increase Thu
afternoon across western areas. Temps will run close to normal
on Thu.

Thursday night through Friday night...

12Z model suite continues to signal development of strong low
pressure, associated with long wave trough across the western
U.S., moving across the central Plains toward the Great Lakes.
As the high pushes offshore, return southerly flow kicks in,
which will bring milder temperatures as well as an area of
rain. Noting increasing PWAT values by Friday, up to 1-2 SD
above seasonal normals as seen on the 12Z GEFS data.

At this point, looks like a wintry mix to start off as the
precip moves in Thu night, which could include some freezing
rain and sleet across western areas. However, with the warmer
air working in, should see a change to rain by around midday
Fri. Current forecast suggests temps topping off around 10
degrees above normal.

AS the low progresses across the Lakes, models vary in their
mass field solutions as to the exact track of the low.
Generally, looks like it will pass N and W of the region, with
some drier air trying to work in overnight and toward daybreak
Saturday. Less than average confidence in the ultimate track of
this low.

Saturday...

Rather low confidence due to wide model solution spread with the
track of the departing low. Have a mainly dry forecast going for
now with continued above normal temps.

.AVIATION /03Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Mainly VFR, though will see local MVFR CIGS across the higher
inland terrain and possibly across portions of the Route 2
corridor between the Worcester hills and the Berkshires. Any
lower CIGS should increase by around 03Z-05Z. W-NW winds
gusting to 25-35 kt, strongest winds over Cape Cod and the
Islands, which should diminish after midnight.

Sunday...

VFR, dry and light NW winds.

Sunday night...

VFR to start but lowering to MVFR toward morning in light snow.

Monday...

A mix of MVFR-VFR in light snow. Possible snow accumulations
ranging from a coating upwards of two inches. Temperatures in
the 30s so runway treatments will be effective.
