.SYNOPSIS...
Cold and mainly dry conditions continue through the weekend, with
the coldest air Friday night into Sunday morning. A few snow showers
are possible Thu night along and ahead of a cold front.  A winter
storm will impact the Mid Atlantic states Sunday but then track out
to sea with dry cold weather continuing across southern New England
early next week. The exception may be outer Cape Cod when ocean
effect snow showers are possible Monday and Tuesday as departing
offshore storm yields moist cold northeast flow into the Cape.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1025 PM Update...

Bands of ocean effect snow showers continue to develop across
Mass Bay into western Cape Cod Bay and eastward to the offshore
waters as seen on latest TBOS 0.3 deg radar imagery. However,
not seeing any reports from either KPVC or KCQX, but most of
precip evaporating before reaching the ground with dewpoint
depressions at both outer Cape locations around 6 to 8 degrees
at 03Z.

Would not be surprised to see a few P6SM -SHSN reports from
the mid and outer Cape and possibly as far S as KACK through
around 06Z as the precip continues to shift S with the
prevailing light northern winds. Once the winds back to NW, the
area of precip should push offshore.

Area of lower clouds, at around 5000-6000 ft, seen across most
of the region on latest GOES-East Nighttime Microphysics and
Night Fog composite satellite imagery as low pressure moves well
SE of the 40N/70W benchmark at 03Z.

Have updated the near term for E coastal areas to line up better
with current conditions, especially across the mid and outer
Cape. Remainder of forecast in pretty good shape but did freshen
up the early portion of the forecast.

Previous Discussion...

Latest surface streamline analysis showed a northerly flow
was developing across the outer Cape this evening. However, the
greatest convergence zone remained over the coastal waters just
to the east, so far. Radar trends showed a few more echoes along
the western side of the main band. These bands should grave the
outer Cape between now and about 10 PM, perhaps as late as
midnight. These bands remain quite shallow, so not expecting
much in the way of accumulation. The greatest risk will be
between Orleans and Provincetown, but may also reach portions of
Dennis, Harwich and Chatham, too.

Minor tweaks to temperatures and sky cover to reflect observed
trends.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Thursday into Thursday night...

Cold and dry through the day, with chance of snow showers overnight
as a reinforcing Arctic cold front sweeps across the region. Weak
high pressure ridging having built in overnight, influential down to
the surface, looking at a dry day with increasing clouds and SW flow
out ahead of a N-stream, deamplifying, open-wave trof axis. Overall
weak isentropic ascent of a continental polar airmass, precipitable
waters upwards of 0.3 inches, coupled with lift along the sweeping
front, can't rule out some snow shower activity despite how dry the
environment. Majority mid-level forcing, and likely better moisture
pooling along W sloping high terrain, higher confidence of outcomes
over the Berkshires and Worcester Hills, as well as downstream over
the warmer waters. Little if any accumulation, only nuisance, maybe
some reductions in visibility. Chance PoPs with higher confidence,
while slight chance PoPs elsewhere centered around Thursday evening.

Chilly with highs up around the mid 30s dropping back down into the
20s as winds shift NW behind the front and cold advection proceeds
with Arctic air pushing SE across the region.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

*/ Highlights...

 - Colder than normal thru early/middle of next week

 - Mainly dry weather prevails into early next week, the exception
   will be ocean effect snow showers possible Cape Cod Mon/Tue

Temperatures...

Cross polar flow into New England results in colder than normal
temps behind a departing cold front early Fri. Ensembles and
deterministic guidance advect -15C at 850 mb and -12C at 925 mb
temps across the region by 12z Sat. Not the coldest air of the
season (Thanksgiving) but temp anomalies about -1 to -2 standard
deviations colder than normal. This will limit highs Saturday to
only the 20s and overnight lows in the single digits and teens Fri
night and Sat night. In addition a modest NW breeze will provide
colder wind chills. By Sunday core of the cold airmass moves
offshore but subsidence inversion from 1030+ mb high advecting into
southern New England Sunday maintains shallow cold air with 925 mb
temps only modifying to -7C to -8C per both GFS and EC. Thus highs
Sunday only 30-35, upper 20s high terrain. Although less wind and
lots of sunshine should make the cold Sunday more tolerable than
Saturday. Early next week northern stream remains dominant with a
reinforcing surge of cold air Mon and Tue. 00z EC more amplified
than 00z GFS with northern stream and associated cold air intrusion.
However EPS and GEFS not as cold as operational 00z EC but colder
than 00z GFS. Thus temps Mon/Tue/Wed should be at least at or
slightly colder than normal.

Precipitation...

Dominant/suppressed northern stream will shunt southern stream Mid
Atlantic winter storm Sunday out to sea early next week. Thus mainly
dry weather prevails across southern New England. The exception may
be Cape Cod Mon and Tue as departing ocean storm results in
moist/cold NE flow into the Cape.

.AVIATION /09Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Friday/...High confidence.

Overnight...
VFR with light N winds for all terminals but the Cape and
Islands. From KPVC-KCQX-KACK, BKN low-end VFR to MVFR CIGS
developing this evening as Isold to SCT -SHSN develop. Local
MVFR VSBYS possible, with N winds around 10 kts through around
05Z- 06Z, then improving towards morning.

Thursday into Thursday night...
Daytime VFR with shifting and increasing SW winds as mid to
upper level CIGs lower towards low-end VFR. Overnight BKN-OVC
low-end VFR CIGs for all terminals except the high terrain where
MVFR CIGs and VSBYs are expected with -SHSN. Impacts centered
around 03Z Friday, concluding into Friday morning, improving.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Height of impacts centered through 04Z-05Z, then should push
offshore as winds back to NW. This the result of N winds backing
ever so slightly NW as a series of low pressure centers emerge
off the mid Atlc.

Thursday into Thursday night...

High pressure ridge will shift E Thursday, allowing winds to back
to W/SW increasing towards evening with gusts up around 25 kts
and seas building 5 to 7 feet on the S-SE waters going into
Friday morning by when a cold front will sweep the waters
resulting in winds shifting NW, remaining blustery. Small Craft
Advisories will be posted.
