.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure just south of New England gives way to milder but
windy conditions today. A cold front brings widespread showers
tonight into Sunday morning, then drying out Sunday afternoon
and remaining mild. A coastal storm will bring a period of snow
mainly across Southeast New England around late Monday lingering
into Tuesday. Cold Wednesday with high pressure, turning mild
into Thursday. Potential rain / snow event into Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

345 AM Update...

Low level WAA pattern commencing early this morning as
temperatures have been rising overnight. At 3 AM already above
freezing at UUU and ACK, both 33 degs. As 1039 mb high moves
farther offshore and cold front approaches from the west, low
level SW jet increases to 50-55 kt over RI and southeast MA this
afternoon. This will result in 925 mb temps warming to about +4C
and will support highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s, with
warmest readings away from the south coast (chilly near shore
waters) in RI and eastern MA. This includes the Boston to
Providence corridor. Given the strong low level warming leaned
toward the milder NAM and ECMWF MOS guidance.

However the mild weather will be tempered by gusty SW winds up
to 40 mph at times, with strongest winds across RI and eastern
MA. Thus it won't feel quite as mild given the gusty winds. Model
soundings suggest gusts should remain below wind advisory
criteria (40kt/46mph) as blyr mixing will be limited/shallow
given subsidence inversion.

Lots of sunshine today with clouds arriving late in the day from west
to east. Thus any showers with approaching cold front will hold
off until after 00z/7pm.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...

345 AM Update...

Tonight...

Fairly good moisture advection ahead of the cold front with
PWATs rising to about +1 SD. This deep layer moisture combined
with modest synoptic and frontal scale forcing will result in
widespread showers along and ahead of the approaching cold
front 06z-12z. Therefore much of the evening hours will be dry
especially across RI and eastern MA.

It will remain mild as dew pts rise into the 40s tonight.

Sunday...

Upper air pattern remains progressive so frontal boundary and
deep layer moisture push southward and offshore with morning
showers giving way to developing sunshine from north to south
across the region during the afternoon. Tho clouds may linger
much of the day along the south coast and islands.

Modest final rainfall totals ranging from 0.10 to 0.25 with low
risk of a few isolated amounts near 0.50 inch.

Given the mild start to the day combined with CAA lagging well
behind the front, temps will rise once again into the upper 40s
and low 50s. Perhaps a few degs warmer than today with a few mid
50s possible over interior sections of RI and southeast MA.
It will feel milder than today given lighter winds and it will
be warm along the south coast as wind direction shifts from SW
today to WNW Sunday.

Overall a real nice weekend by late Jan standards.

Progressive punch out of the NE Pacific downstream of a H5 blocking
ridge over the N Pacific. But all that's about to change going into
February. Pacific jet pushing E, energy gathers S of the Aluetians.
H5 ridging extends N/E into the Arctic in advance of the split-flow
regime. Arctic air begins to dislodge from as far as Siberia, the
Canadian gyre starting to wobble S. This as the MJO is forecast to
remain strong through phase 5/6/7, captured by the S-split of the
aforementioned N Pacific jet. The thermal / baroclinic transition
zone edging ever so S/E and accompanying storm track, watching for
that right moment when it taps into the S-stream and we potentially
see greater storm development around the E-coast. Only certainty for
now is anomalously cold, Arctic air will dig into the N CONUS into
early February associated with a deeper H5 trof.

*/ Discussion...

Sunday night into Tuesday...

Focusing on synoptics and away from QPF fields. Starting off with a
broad view, forecast models have trended subtly stronger with the H5
ridge across the W CONUS in tandem with a deeper storm into W Canada
out of the NE Pacific. Delay in the progressive punch as models have
trended downstream traffic over the N Atlantic further W, closer to
the E CONUS. Interesting how the trailing shortwave and attendant H5
trof is less pronounced, a bit more flat. But all aside, expect the
sweeping cold front Saturday night into Sunday morning to hang off
the SE coastline of New England. Lead shortwave, S-stream energy is
the cyclogenic focus towards the wave low along the front. Trailing
shortwave and attendant H5 trof is the drawback pull.

Around late Monday, expecting a broad area of light and fluffy snow
to sweep SE New England yielding advisory level 2-4" snows. Perhaps
ocean-effect influences. Snow ratios close to 15:1. Snow showers and
a localized convergent snow band along an inverted trof expected to
linger into Tuesday.

Yes, the 27.0z suite of guidance has trended E, yet interrogating
consensus of guidance, despite shortwave energy remaining separate,
bumping one another along, there remains moisture pull back along
the 290-300K isentropic surfaces as the low to mid level thermal
gradient sharpens per initial isentropic response, a cold conveyor
belt emerging. H6-7 SW-NE frontogenesis, favorable lift through the
snow growth region, in proximity of a right rear quadrant of a H3
jet. There appears to be decent lift / omega of available moisture.
Also adding an increasing H925 NE jet, convergent into Southeast New
England, steepening lapse rates up to H85, potential ocean-effect
influences. Believe there will plenty of moisture within the column
with ice nuclei present.

Despite considerable spread in SREF/GEFS plumes, even within CIPS
Analogs, there seems to be enough synoptic evidence to suggest a
broad swipe of snow across SE New England around late Monday, the
potential for an advisory level event with amounts around 2 to 4
inches. Impacts seemingly for the Boston-Providence I-95 corridor
for the Monday PM commute.

Expect wobbling with later forecasts as forecast guidance nails down
mid-level features as well as timing, but considering a robust storm
making an impact along the W coast, it's not often you see a strong
storm making an impact along the E coast, hence leaning with an
advisory level event associated with a swiping weak wave low above
1000 mb, progressive upstream flow. Avoiding the high-end ensemble
member outliers.

On a closing note, the trailing shortwave and accompanying H5 trof
sweeping the area, there are indications of the aforementioned NE
onshore H925 jet converging with the rear-wrapping cold conveyor
belt. A mesoscale convergent feature as an inverted trof, can't rule
out additional snow shower activity lingering into Tuesday, possibly
a localized heavier band where NE and NW flow come together. Still
some indication this feature may lie S/W of New England yet not
overly confident. Do expect some localized impact into our neck of
the woods that may require headlines.

Wednesday onward...

Winds diminishing under the influence of high pressure on Wednesday.
Cold air in place. But gradually dislodged as the high settles S/E,
and increasing return S flow, becoming mild into Thursday. Going on
into Friday, another sweeping cold front along which there's the
potential for another wave low to develop upon. A rain / snow event
appears more likely in association with a digging H5 open-wave vort-
max. Starting over the weekend, looking at the first in a series of
high pressure centers out of Canada, the beginning of what looks to
be period of reloading Arctic air into the N CONUS. As mentioned in
the OVERVIEW, will need to closely monitor upstream storm tracks and
the shifting zone of better baroclincity.

gusting up to 35-40 kt at times this afternoon.

Tonight...VFR to start but trending to MVFR along with
widespread showers 06z-12z. SSW winds diminish at the surface
but LLWS continues along the south coast including Cape Cod.
