.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves off to the east today. Seasonably warm air
will then surge into our area. A cold front from the Plains
will sweep through our area early tonight. Unseasonable warm
pattern follows late weekend, however can't rule out some
sneaky chills out of Canada. Overall a drier forecast, less
rainfall chances until perhaps the end of the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure moves offshore early, clearing the way for a cold
front to approach our region this afternoon and evening.
Expecting some sunshine to develop later today. Even so, low
level lapse rates will probably remain poor. Mid level lapse
rates are projected to be a little better than moist adiabatic.
Thinking this scenario should not be enough to trigger
thunderstorm development, but might be enough to maintain
thunderstorms moving into southern New England, for a time
anyway.

Timing of this front is late enough in the day where there
should only be a rather small window for thunderstorms. This
window should also be late enough in the day where severe
weather is not expected.

Winds turn south early, then increase trough the day ahead of
the approaching cold front. This combination should boost high
temperatures above normal.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
A risk of showers with the passage of a cold front this evening.
Winds turn NW, then eventually N overnight. Drier air arrives
behind this front, continuing into Friday.

Low temperatures tonight should be near to slightly above
normal. Stronger cold air advection Friday should mean highs
near to slightly below normal.

Overview and model preferences...
Overall, models continue to support a transtion to a highly
amplified pattern across the CONUS, driven in part by Sergio in
the Pacific. The upper lvl warm ridging within Sergio's
periphery enhances E Pacific ridge, driving trof development
downstream across the Continental Divide. The result, is a
conduit for closed H5 high/ridge (potentially exceeding 596dm)
to reach the NE and New England into next week. The rising
heights and warm advection from this build will ultimately lead
to much warmer than normal conditions and inhibit precipitation
processes. However, as previous forecaster noted, lower lvls are
a bit more tricky, as the mean jet is only just across
central/N New England, suggesting that a low lvl front will be
nearby and could slide close enough, or even over S New England
as very weak shortwaves move through the jet. This will make
temps tricky, and introduce a low risk for occasional precip,
particularly early next week, when height rises slow or stall
entirely. Given the synoptic pattern is well agreed upon, will
use a consensus blend of guidance for this forecast update.

Temperatures...
Sat, inverted ridging will draw air off the Gulf of Maine,
where SSTs still rest in the mid 60s. This will limit mixing and
keep highs in the mid-upper 60s as well, near seasonal normal
values. Mins to follow will be in the 50s. By Sun however, warm
front shifting N and return flow will allow BL mixing to reach
closer to H85 where temps are near +14C, so expect highs to warm
into the 70s as a result. The uncertainty in sfc temps
increases Mon especially as a weak wave could allow a front to
shift S as a backdoor front. Howver, noting continued height
building aloft into the middle of next week, which suggest that
as the core of high pres shifts S and E, there will be a return
to warmer than normal conditions until the ridge breaks down.

Precipitation...
With a ridge dominant pattern in place, this will limit
precipitation chances, especially as long as the mean jet
remains well enough to the N. This lasts through Sun, however
will need to watch the potential backdoor front early next work
week. This could introduce some SHRA especially as column PWATs
increase to above 1.50in. Most ensemble members and operational
guidance then allow heights to rise again through the middle of
the week, so expect a return to mainly dry conditions as the
front lifts back N and high pres regains control. Overall,
mainly dry conditions with only isolated SHRA anticipated. No
washouts expected through this period.
