Dry conditions will return for Wednesday and Thursday.

Due to the combination of previous heavy rains main stem
river levels to rise. River levels should crest in the next 
36 to 48 hours.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move slowly north into northern New England
today and will linger across the region into Wednesday. The low
pulls away Thursday followed by high pressure Friday into
Saturday. Stormy pattern returns Sunday into early next week.
Milder and faster weather pattern, expecting quick bouts of
rainfall to add to our already soaked region.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1030 am update...

GOES16 satellite imagery and KALY radar showing comma head
rain/snow lifting northward, exiting northern MA and tracking
into VT/NH. Visible imagery showing breaks in the cloud cover
developing across the entire region. This drying trend will
continue along with breaks of sunshine becoming more numerous as
the day progresses. Although with cold pool cyclonic flow aloft
(-27C at 500 mb) these breaks will fill back in with more
clouds but then give way to additional partial clearing toward
sunset. Highs in the mid to upper 40s seem on track for much of
CT/RI and eastern MA with mid to upper 30s high terrain of
western MA.

Any lingering light snow/flurries this morning across western MA
will not accumulate given light intensity and temps above
freezing. With 980 mb low along the Essex county coast and
slowly moving north into coastal ME, expect gusty WSW winds to
continue especially over Cape Cod and Islands where a wind
advisory remains posted for gusts up to 45 mph. Earlier
discussion below.

Combination of sfc obs and MSAS pres gradient suggest the sfc
low pres is almost right above our heads at the time of this
writing. Meanwhile, noting mid lvl comma-head banding moving
through W MA/CT this morning with 1-2in/hr snowfall rates in
spots, suggesting the mid lvl cutoff is deepening. However, both
are somewhat progressive, suggesting the all precip should be
rapidly ending through about 14 to 15Z this AM. POPs will be
timed toward this thinking. Additional snowfall will be
primarily in the higher terrain of N/NW MA where a T to about 2
inches could fall before ending. Otherwise, the forecast is on
track, so adjustments through the day will be minimal with the
primary focus this morning.

Previous forecast discussion follows...

Light precip lifting north across SNE early this morning, with
focus shifting north of the pike through mid morning as drier
air moves in from the south. Meanwhile, steadier precip to the
west will begin to fill in across western MA this morning as the
mid level low and comma head approaches. Ptype mostly rain
with some snow across the Berkshires and northern Worcester
Hills. RAP indicating low level warming expanding west from the
coastal plain through 12z which should result in snow changing
back to rain in the Worcester hills but snow likely persisting
across the Berkshires which is on the edge of the deeper cold
air. Additional accum of 1-3 inches possible across the
Berkshires through mid morning, with highest amounts in the
higher elevations in western Franklin county. Winter weather
advisories will continue.

Low level jet across the Cape will lift north through 12z
shifting high wind threat across coastal NE MA.

Low pres lifts slowly north into northern New Eng today as it
becomes captured under the upper level low. Wind shift to W/SW
will bring drier air into the region later this morning into the
afternoon with mainly dry conditions. However, deeper moisture
in the comma head to the north and west may result in sct snow
showers spilling into the east slopes of the Berkshires through
the afternoon. Increasing W/SW winds expected later this
morning into the afternoon as low pres lifts to the north with
steep low level lapse rates developing. Wind gusts to 25-35 mph
with 35-45 mph gusts possible across the outer Cape/Islands.
Extended wind advisory through the afternoon across Nantucket
where strongest wind gusts expected. High temps occur this
morning with temps this afternoon ranging from the mid 30s to
lower/mid 40s.

Tonight into Wednesday...

Vertically stacked low pres will linger across northern New Eng
into Wed before gradually moving offshore by Wed evening.
Sufficient moisture in the column for broken cloud cover with
most clouds in western New Eng. A few snow showers possible from
time to time, mainly in the Berkshires tonight into Wed, while
shortwaves rotating around mid level low may also bring a few
rain/snow showers to rest of SNE on Wed. Gusty NW winds
developing Wed as gradient tightens up, with expected highs
upper 30s to mid 40s.

*/ Highlights...

Overview and model preferences...
Mid-upper lvl cutoff shifts E toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence
Wed night. In its wake, is a very weak and elongated ridging on
the N periphery of zonal flow setup across the N half of the
CONUS. The mean zonal jet locks out the bulk of the arctic cold
through the week, allowing temps to remain generally near
seasonal normal values. The ridging also remains in place
through late week. In fact, it is expected to amplify slightly
by the weekend as Pacific wave deepens somewhat in the Lee of
the Continental Divide. This wave will begin the impact New
England by late in the weekend and early next week, suggesting a
return to more unsettled and potentially wet WX. Overall,
enough agreement in the long range guidance to use a consensus
blend for this update.

Details...

Wed night into Thu...
Gradual slackening of the pres gradient and therefore weakening
W-NW flow across the region through the period. This should
also lead to dissipation of any lingering upslope SHSN in the
higher terrain of NW MA. Lows Wed night still in the 30s, as the
pres gradient will inhibit radiational cooling. Highs in the
low-mid 40s, typical for late Nov.

Fri...
Ridging allows for continuation of quiet weather. However,
slight amplification of the ridge will allow low/mid lvl temps
to rise somewhat. While this would normally lead to warmer
conditions during the day on Fri colder temps Thu night, thanks
to radiational cooling (lows dropping into the 20s), will keep
highs once again in the low-mid 40s.

Sat...
Will lean on the slowest and driest guidance for Sat. This is
mainly due to the continued ridge amplification across the
northeast as trof deepens east of the Rockies as mentioned
above. Noting that in conjunction with the height rises and
implied subsidence, available soundings are quite dry with PWATs
near to slightly below seasonal normals into the day. Will
introduce some low end POPs by late day, but its likely to
remain dry through much of the period based on current trends.
Temps remain near seasonal.

Sun...
As previous forecaster noted, timing is important here. Low
pres associated with the wave across the central CONUS will
shift NE toward New England. PWAT plume near 1.00 inches
approaches as well. While precipitation is looking likely for
Sun into Sun night, the timing issue will determine whether some
SN could fall as the precip shield moves in, particularly early
Sun thanks to BL cooling. Aloft, temps warm enough to suggest
mainly rain. Best chance would for SN would be high terrain
where any BL cooling can be maximized early Sat night. Anomalous
PWATS near 1.00 inches suggest some mod-heavy rain with total
QPF potentially exacerbating localized minor river flooding if
they remain high by the end of the week.

Early next week...
As the low pres attempts to become stacked Sun night, the
timing of this exit will determine how quickly drier air can
return to the region by early Mon. Typical model biases are
noted as the ECMWF is much more amplified and slow, introducing
a coastal low on Mon while GFS shows its typical fast bias. Will
lean most heavily on ensembles for this end stretch of the long
term.

morning and mid day hours, with timing possibly off in TAF by a
couple of hours. Otherwise, winds rapidly shifting around to the

areas of minor coastal flooding. Tides are about a foot higher
for the high tide cycle this afternoon but expected storm
surge should only be around 1 foot with less wave action.
