Low pressure moving up from the New Jersey coast will cross Southern New England Tuesday morning. This will bring rain, with occasional downpours possible. The rain will taper off Tuesday morning as the storm center moves north of Massachusetts.

Rainfall totals of between 1 and 1.5 inches are expected by the time the rain tapers off. 

The rainfall will cause rising river stages tonight through Wednesday.  Several rivers will go into minor flood as a result.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will bring rain, gusty coastal winds, and minor
coastal flooding this morning into the early afternoon. A second
low pressure system will bring a soaking rain to the region
Monday afternoon into early Tuesday, with any threat of wet snow
confined to the highest terrain. There may also be a period of
strong winds along the coast Monday night into early Tuesday.
Mainly dry and chilly weather is anticipated for the rest of the
work week, other than perhaps a few rain/snow showers on
Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

630 AM Update...

The surface low now sits directly south of Cape Cod as we reach
our peak wind/rain time period. Rain has begun to exit Rhode
Island this morning with the heaviest band lingering over PVD to
BOS corridor where we've seen amounts around an inch. As
expected the heaviest rainfall was along the south coast and
southeast MA...Should exit in the next 3-4 hours. Winds along
the south coast have become gusty...highest so far would be
Nantucket who recorded a 46 mph gust. Winds should peak over
the next few hours and start a downward trend after 14-15Z.

Previous Discussion...

Today's rain and wind event is underway this morning courtesy of the
low pressure currently sitting just east of the mid NJ coast. This
is a decidedly more southerly track and is quite a departure from
what most all guidance indicated even with Saturday's 12Z runs. In
the last 12-18 hours most all synoptic models have come much further
south with the track of this low, keeping it well offshore which
will have a noticeable effect on our sensible weather...namely less
rain, especially to the north, and less magnitude/duration of the
strongest winds. Much of this is due to the fact that as the low
track shifts further south, so too does our best forcing for
efficient precipitation in the low/mid levels (the 50-60 kt LLJ).
Previous forecasts indicated the higher winds extending further
north and later in the day because this jet initially was set to
impact the coast on the front end, then wrapped back around the low
center as it exited. Now this feature will be confined further south
along the coast as exit more quickly. For this reason the Gale
Warnings for waters north of Cape Cod have been downgraded to Small
Craft Advisories while the Wind Advisory for the Cape and islands
remains (though shortened) given the proximity to decent a decent
pressure fall signature and tightest pressure gradient. Minor
coastal flooding is possible along the east MA coast (details in the
coastal section below). This is fortunately quite a progressive
system and the precip exits eastern MA late morning/afternoon as the
mid level shortwave quickly takes the low out to sea. Winds become
northerly and light through the afternoon and highs will again be
near normal in the 40s; near 50 along the coastal plain.

Tonight

Flow becomes zonal behind the low and heights rise a bit under a
brief weak mid level ridge between systems. This keeps southern New
England dry for the latter half of Sunday and Sunday night but
stubborn low level moisture will keep skies cloudy throughout.
Though winds will be light cloud cover prevents efficient
radiational cooling, keeping lows in the 30s (low 40s along the
southeast coast).

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM MONDAY/...
Low pressure departs rather quickly Sunday morning. Expecting
only lingering showers across eastern MA towards noon.
Temperatures do not change much Sunday, but should then fall a
bit before the next low pressure arrives late Sunday night.

Gusty winds continue during the day, but the wind direction
will shift from the east to the north. Will continue with the
Wind Advisory for the Cape and Islands.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights...

* Soaking rain anticipated Monday afternoon into early Tuesday along
  with a period of strong winds possible along the coast

* Some minor river/stream flooding will continue to be a concern
  into through early this week

* Ptype Mon into early Tue will be all rain except perhaps the risk
  for some wet snow mainly across the highest terrain of the Berks

* A few rain/showers possible Wed, otherwise mainly dry with below
  normal temperatures Thu and Fri

* A period of unsettled weather is possible sometime next weekend
  but the timing is uncertain and odds favor mainly wet weather

Details...

Monday into early Tuesday...

Vigorous upper level energy over the Great Lakes will result in an
initial surface low pressure system tracking towards the Great Lakes
Monday.  However...guidance agrees on a secondary stronger low
developing across the mid Atlantic which will lift northeast across
our region later Monday into early Tue morning.

The overall result will be a soaking rain event.  We will continue
to need to watch for some minor river/small stream flooding given
the recent wet weather.  Also impressive low level jet may result in
40 to 50 mph wind gusts for a time Monday night/early Tuesday along
the eastern MA coast, Cape/Islands.  However...lapse rates/intensity
do not appear there to warrant a significant damage/power outage
threat at this time.

Ptype should pretty much be all rain given a likely inland track and
lack of an antecedent cold airmass. However...there remains the risk
for some wet snow across the high terrain along the east slopes of
the Berkshires and perhaps even the far northern Worcester Hills.
This will depend on how quickly the storm intensifies and its exact
track.  Current indications are that it is possible for a few
slushy inches mainly across the highest terrain along the east
slopes of the Berkshires.  A weaker/further west track would likely
result in an all rain solution...while stronger/eastern version would
bring a low risk of 6" inches mainly at elevations of 1500 feet.  We
tried to depict this in our probabilistic snowfall forecast given
the uncertainty...but for the vast majority of the region this will
just be a rain event.

Wednesday through Friday...

Deep closed low over New England will gradually shift east over this
time period.  Overall...this should result in mainly dry weather
although still will have to watch for a few rain/snow showers mainly
on Wednesday as the vigorous upper level disturbance crosses our
region.  That still bears watching for the low risk of a bit more
organized precipitation from an inverted trough feature...but at
this time upper level energy may be too far north of our region.
Otherwise...mainly just dry and chilly with high temps mainly in the
upper 30s to the lower 40s for the rest of the work week.

Saturday and Sunday...

Low confidence but another system may be approaching our region
Saturday or perhaps not until Sunday.  Low confidence on
timing...but probably mainly a liquid event given the upper level

Today... Easterly wind gusts 30-40 kts continue this morning as a
developing low pressure moves south of the waters. GALE WARNINGS
posted for waters from Cape Cod south. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES are up
for waters north of Cape Cod as well as Narragansett Bay. Winds will
shift to the north later this morning into afternoon. North winds
diminish Sunday evening/night. Rough seas today, especially across
the southern outer coastal waters where waves build to 10-13 ft,
diminishing in the evening. Visibility will also be reduced this
morning in heavy rain and some patchy fog.

Outlook /Monday through Thursday/...

Monday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 30 kt. Local rough seas. Slight chance of rain.

Monday Night: Moderate risk for gale force winds with gusts up
to 45 kt. Rough seas up to 13 ft. Rain, patchy fog. Local
visibility 1 nm or less.

Tuesday: Moderate risk for gale force winds with gusts up to
40 kt. Rough seas up to 12 ft.

Tuesday Night: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds
with gusts up to 25 kt. Local rough seas. Slight chance of rain
showers.

Wednesday: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with
gusts up to 30 kt. Seas up to 5 ft. Slight chance of rain
showers.

Wednesday Night: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds
with gusts up to 30 kt. Local rough seas. Slight chance of rain

.HYDROLOGY...
We will continue to monitor the potential for some minor
river/stream flooding through early next week with another soaking
rainfall anticipated Monday afternoon into early Tuesday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A coastal flood advisory continues for today/s midday high tide
cycle along the eastern MA coast and Nantucket.  Given the low
pressure system is tracking further south than it appeared 24 hours
ago...storm surge will generally be on the order of 0.5 to 1 feet.
However...given the high astronomical tides this will still be
capable of producing some pockets of minor coastal flooding of the
typically vulnerable shoreline roads within an hour or two of high
tide.  No structural damage or significant impacts are expected.

It appears that the strongest winds/seas with our next storm will
occur Monday night.  This is in between the higher astro tides that
occur on both early Monday and Tuesday afternoons.  This may prevent
any impactful coastal flood issues...but will continue to
monitor.

Another soaking rainfall is anticipated Monday afternoon into early
Tuesday morning. This may result in some minor river and small stream
flooding. Precipitation type will generally be rain...but it still
remains possible that it becomes cold enough for a period of
accumulating wet snow along the high terrain along the east slopes of
the Berkshires and perhaps even far northern Worcester Hills.

A wind advisory might be needed along the immediate eastern
Massachusetts coast, as well as the Cape and Islands Monday night
into very early Tuesday morning.
