.SYNOPSIS...
Drier air will move into southern New Eng through early
evening as a cold front moves off the coast. An upper level
system will keep unsettled conditions across the region through
mid week. A low pressure area will produce a period of chilly
rain during Thursday. Lingering rain showers Thursday night may
mix with or change to wet snow across northern Massachusetts.
The weekend looks to be dry but with more below normal
temperatures.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...
Heavy rainfall and isold t-storms lifting across central and
eastern New Eng while dry slot moves into western New Eng.
Rainfall will quickly taper off and end from west to east
through early evening.
Wind gusts to 50 mph noted on mesonet across portions of
southern RI as low level jet is moving into the region. Similar
gusts possible across southeast MA and Cape/Islands through
early evening as the jet moves along the coast, then
diminishing wind. Wind advisories will continue.
Dry slot persists over SNE tonight which will result in mostly
dry conditions, but deepening moisture assocd with approaching
mid level low moves back into western New Eng late tonight which
may bring a few rain/snow showers to western MA.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Tuesday...
Mid level low moves over SNE with cyclonic flow aloft. Deep
moisture in the column combined with steepening 925-700 mb
lapse rates will result in a few showers developing, especially
across the interior. Otherwise, any morning sunshine will
quickly give way to mostly cloudy skies. Temps still about 10
degrees below normal for this time of year. W/SW flow with gusts
to 20-25 mph at times.

* Chilly rain appears likely for Thursday, possibly lingering into
Thursday night
* The coming weekend looks to be dry but cooler than normal
Discussion...
The large scale pattern across greater North America is dominated by
large closed low centers, typical of early spring. A closed low
about northern New England early in this period will drift across
the Canadian maritimes later in the week. For the most part,
temperatures are expected to remain somewhat below normal for
most of this period.
One precipitation event is expected on Thursday and possibly into
Thursday night as a fairly vigorous short wave trough approaches
from the west and eventually becomes absorbed into the Canadian
Maritimes closed low. As far as the surface track, most medium
models bring it across southern New England. The ECMWF, both the
00Z and 12Z operational runs and their respective ensembles,
tracks the surface low just south of New England and then NE
into the eastern Gulf of Maine. The NAM also keeps the low
track south of New England. The track differences would be
reflected in stratiform versus showery precipitation and
temperatures. For now, we are leaning toward the ECMWF solution
with temperatures in the 40s during most of the day Thursday.
The thermal profile looks like wet snow could mix with the rain
or even have the precipitation change to a period of snow across
northern MA before ending Thursday night as the boundary layer
cools a tad. No accumulation is expected other than perhaps a
coating or so across the higher elevations of the Berkshires and
Worcester hills.
A model consensus would point toward a dry but cooler than normal
weekend ahead. A closed upper low pressure center will move across
the southern USA and produce an anomalous coastal storm off the SE
USA coast by early next week, but any impacts on southern New
England would be after this forecast period.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Although the strongest SE to S winds will have moved to the NE,
a weaker southerly gradient will persist through the evening
high tide along the south coast. Without any significant
pressure rises and with a southerly gradient persisting,
anticipate we may see a surge around 1.5 feet at the time of the
9 to 9:30 PM high tide, enough to produce a few areas of minor
coastal flooding along portions of Narragansett Bay. A lingering
swell from the south may produce some splashover at the time of
the high tide along the RI south coast, mainly along the Newport
County shoreline. There could also be some minor beach erosion
along the RI south coast and adjacent MA south coast around
Westport. We have a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect for the
time about the evening high tide along the RI and adjacent MA
south coast, including the Narragansett Bay shoreline.

At 118 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Windham Connecticut southeastward
to Richmond, Rhode Island. The area was racing north at 80 mph.
Winds in excess of 30 mph will accompany these storms.

Worcester, Shrewsbury, Coventry, South Kingstown, Mansfield, Windham,
Plainfield, Orange, Grafton, Willimantic, Killingly, Holden, Webster,
Southbridge, Auburn, Burrillville, Oxford, Millbury, Charlton and

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Get indoors when these storms approach. Frequent lightning was
occurring. Lightning can strike far away from the storm. Go inside a
