.SYNOPSIS...
A couple waves of low pressure will bring periods of showers with
locally heavy rainfall today into Saturday morning along with
mild temperatures. The rain ends Saturday afternoon, but will be
followed by a period of strong to damaging wind gusts Saturday
afternoon and early evening. Sunday will be the pick of the
weekend with high pressure providing light winds, dry weather
and highs in the 50s. Cool weather continues through Tuesday
with wet weather anticipated. Another round of wet weather,
possible thunderstorms, is forecast Wednesday. Cool, dry weather
follows thereafter.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

Today...

Impressive short wave entering the OH valley early this morning per
latest GOES16 water vapor imagery. Attending surface wave/parent low
pressure is now in southwest PA and will move northeast into NY
state today.  However models have now trended weaker with this
system as short wave trough shows signs of deamplification. Thus
none of the model guidance is showing heavy qpf over southern New
England. Now we can't rule out brief heavy downpours later this
morning given PWATs climbing to 1.75 inches over the area combined
with weak instability and forcing. However the threat of widespread
heavy rain has diminished. In fact even the convective threat has
lowered as model advects deep layer dry into the 700-500 mb column
this afternoon. While some dry air steepens mid level lapse rates
the depth of dry air this afternoon over the region appears too deep
to support severe storms and will limit convective chances. The more
likely scenario looks to be periods of rain this morning as warm
front lifts northward across the area, then somewhat of drying trend
this afternoon.

Regarding temps, impressive warm sector with 925 mb temps surging to
+16C over the region today along with dew pts in the 60s. These
temps aloft would support highs in the 70s if any sunshine were to
develop. However abundant low level moisture in the warm sector will
yield a low overcast, especially this morning in showers and
drizzle. Nonetheless this airmass with high dew pts will yield highs
well into the 60s regionwide.

It will become windy in the coastal plain including Providence to
Boston. However the strongest winds will along the immediate south
coast of MA/RI including Cape Cod and the Islands with sustain winds
of 25-35 mph. Model soundings are inverted which should preclude
stronger winds aloft from mixing to the surface.

Details...

Tonight into Saturday...

An active 24 hours of weather is in store for the region beginning
tonight into Saturday. The main concern is for very strong to
damaging winds Saturday afternoon behind a departing cold front.  A
secondary concern with greater uncertainty is the low risk flash
flooding. Here are the details...

1) Very Strong to Damaging Wind Potential...

A wave of low pressure will intensify rapidly over the region
Saturday as a potent short wave trough becomes negatively tilted.
The wave deepens rapidly, 15 mbs in 12 hrs from a 1002 mb low over
MA to a 987 low over ME by late Sat. This rapid intensification is
accompanied by a very strong pressure rise-fall couplet that will
enhance the isallobaric wind component. Strong cold air advection
behind the wave steepens low level lapse rates with both NAM and GFS
bufkit model soundings indicating multiple hours of 50+kt wind gusts.
Thus will hoist a high wind watch Saturday afternoon from 2 pm to 8
pm for the entire region. Winds of this magnitude combined with
fully to partially leaved trees (especially southwest MA) increases
the risk for down tree limbs and resulting isolated power outages.
Greatest risk for damaging winds appears across eastern MA, Cape
Cod, the Islands, RI and into the Worcester Hills.

2) Heavy Rain/Localized Flood Threat:

PWATs and wind anomalies of +2 to +3 SD combined with strong frontal
convergence will result in bands of heavy showers tonight into
Saturday morning along and ahead of approaching frontal wave. Good
model consensus on a widespread 1-2" rainfall event. However given
strong frontal convergence combined with some weak instability there
is a risk for narrow bands of convection with heavier rainfall totals
up to 3 to perhaps 4 inches. However given uncertainty on these
mesoscale bands/higher totals decided to hold off on a flood watch
for the moment. However will have to see how later model runs trend.
Nonetheless expect at least nuisance type street and highway
flooding.

Temps...mild weather continues as warm sector remains over the area.
Dramatic temperature drop Saturday with much of RI and eastern MA
beginning the day in the 60s but temps dropping rapidly behind the
front with temps in the 40s by days end along with very strong WNW
winds making it feel much colder.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

*Dry and sunny Sunday
*Wet Monday into Tuesday
*Showers and t-storms possible by mid week

Overview...

The low exits to the north Saturday night leaving us under the
influence of a large surface high and upper level ridge on Sunday
bringing dry and colder conditions. By Monday a shortwave moves
through bringing the return of rain chances. Tuesday we get a brief
break before the next significant frontal system moves through
bringing widespread rain and thunderstorm chances  Tuesday night and
Wednesday. Beyond that flow becomes zonal with quiet weather under a
building surface high.

Saturday night and Sunday...

By Saturday night the low pressure system exits northern New
England, taking the strong LLJ with it and relaxing the surface
pressure gradient. This will lead to gradually diminishing west
winds overnight into early Sunday morning. Heights are on the rise
Sunday as a surface high pressure builds into the northeast,
centered over SNE by Sunday afternoon. This will be the best day of
the weekend/early week with a dry atmospheric column allowing sunny
skies but with highs about 10 degrees cooler than Saturday, in the
low to mid 50s.

Monday and Tuesday...

Compared to 24 hours ago model runs have sped up the progression of
the next mid level shortwave for the first part of the week, meaning
Monday looks wetter than previously indicated. Sunday night mid and
upper level moisture increases and clouds move in ahead of the
precip. By early Monday PWATs increase to over and inch from the
south. This with forcing from the mid level vort max, RRQ of the
upper jet, and a marginal 30 kt LLJ will bring rain chances Monday,
lesser on Tuesday. Not expecting significant QPF amounts with this
system, on the order a few tenths to three quarters of an inch.
Still a good amount of uncertainty in this regard.

Wednesday and Thursday...

By Tuesday night/early Wednesday a stronger shortwave trough swings
through associated with a surface low pressure system moving north
of the Great Lakes region. This brings a warm front and widespread
rain chances Tuesday night ahead of the cold front which swings
through sometime Wednesday, though confidence on timing is low. At
the moment models do indicate potential for some thunderstorm
activity, especially along the southern half of the forecast areas
where instability is greatest. With dewpoints approaching 60 and a
potent LLJ moving it will be something to monitor for the potential
of strong to severe storms. Additionally, post frontal winds
Wednesday night and Thursday look quite gusty. Dry but windy
conditions possible.

.AVIATION /08Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Saturday/...Moderate to high confidence.

06z update...

Today...

Warm front along south coast of MA/RI will lift north today with
N-NE winds becoming south by afternoon all terminals. IFR/LIFR
with VFR conditions along south coast trending toward MVFR/IFR.
Showers become widespread later this morning then a drying trend
this afternoon. South winds increase to 20-30 kt along the south
coast including Cape Cod and Islands. However 60 kt low level
jet supports LLWS today across southern terminals. Any
thunderstorms should be very isolated.

Tonight...

IFR/LIFR continue with second round of showers and embedded
thunder. Rain will be heavy at times. Gusty winds continue along
south coast including Cape Cod and Islands. LLWS persist as well
especially RI and eastern MA terminals.

Saturday...

Strong cold front sweeps across the area from late morning into
the early afternoon. LLWS in the morning transitions to south
winds shifting to the WNW and becoming very gusty 18z-00z with
gusts up to 50 kt possible! Morning IFR/LIFR improves to
MVFR/VFR during the afternoon. Scattered morning showers with
embedded thunder gives way to dry weather in the afternoon.

KBOS Terminal...
IFR/LIFR persist into Saturday morning. Widespread showers later
this morning followed by a drying trend this afternoon. Heavier
showers tonight into Sat morning along with embedded thunder.
Sharp wind shift Saturday afternoon with frontal passage. WNW
winds may gust up to 50 kt Sat 18z-00z!!

KBDL Terminal...
IFR persist into Saturday morning. Widespread showers later
this morning followed by a drying trend this afternoon. Heavier
showers tonight into Sat morning along with embedded thunder.
Sharp wind shift late Sat morning into early afternoon with
frontal passage. WNW winds may gust up to 45 kt Sat 16z-22z!!

dramatically with the wind shift from south to west with gusts in
the afternoon and evening up to 50 kt possible. Thus Storm Watches
have been posted. Heavy showers and isolated thunder in the morning
result in poor vsby but improving with the wind shift.
