.SYNOPSIS...

Low pressure tracks south of New England tonight, then exiting
out to sea Monday. Any leftover light snow and/or rain Monday
morning gives way to dry weather by midday. Expect windy and
much colder conditions on Tuesday with bitter wind chill values.
More seasonable conditions return late week through the following
weekend with forecast soaking rains and potential flooding for
Friday, followed by seasonable, dry conditions over the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

Low pressure was centered about halfway between Nantucket and
the 40N/70w benchmark. This low pressure is expected to move
offshore through today. Latest radar mosaic data already showed
gaps in the precipitation towards the western half of southern
New England. Expecting precipitation to be more of the banded
variety than widespread as this morning continues.

Forecast still remains tricky this morning with respect to
precipitation type. Surface and low level temperatures remain
conditionally able to support snow across the higher terrain.
However, the precipitation rates must be high enough to generate
enough dynamic cooling to fully switch over to snow and sleet.
Where the precipitation rates have not been robust enough,
expecting mainly rain, especially across the lower elevations.
It will take some doing to get snow south and east of the I-95
corridor in MA and RI.

Winds will turn north early this morning, then should be
northwest by mid morning. This will draw colder air into our
region. Thinking max temperatures will be similar to Sunday,
and right around normal for mid December. A vigorous mid level
shortwave will likely keep more clouds than sunshine in our
skies today.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...

The potent mid level shortwave departs for the North Atlantic
this evening. Clouds will gradually decrease, especially late
tonight into Tuesday. The colder air will be more noticeable,
temperatures trending below normal tonight and Tuesday. Also
anticipating gusty winds to develop from deeper mixing as low
level lapse rates steepen. Still thinking we come up a bit shy
of needing a Wind Advisory across the outer Cape and Cape Ann.
Will ponder this a bit more this morning.

Dry weather should prevail across most of our region, with two
exceptions. One will be towards the Berkshires where the
upslope component to the wind may bring some snow showers to
portions of the east slopes. The second will be across the
coastal waters east of MA, where an ocean-effect process is
likely to get going. The wind direction is such that this is not
expected to impact the Cape or Nantucket.

occlusion with secondary low development along the Mid-Atlantic into
NE coast. Precipitable waters up to 1.5" exceeding max climatology
for the Chatham, MA upper-air site, rich / moist theta-E plume, and
freezing level heights up to 12 kft coupled with convective indices
exceeding thresholds, negative showalters, and indications of meso-
lows (triple-point and along the trailing cold front), certainty of
period of moderate to heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms. Despite
the high shear, low instability scenario advertised, colder ground
temperatures and ocean waters will aid in keeping an inversion. Yet
we'll have to watch closely for 2m temperatures and dewpoints prior
to the event, whether we can erode said inversion. Leaning towards
warmest temperature / dewpoint guidance. Again, preference to EC /
ECens placing a heavy slug of rain across the region for Friday.
Breezy S winds per gradient wind alone but will hold off for now on
anything stronger. We are approaching a period of high astronomical
tides as Boston approaches 11 feet 930a Friday. Last note, with the
high E, less favorability concerning freezing rain with onset for
Thursday night into Friday morning.

Friday night through the Weekend...

Dry slot Friday night likely to be followed by main cold surge that
is associated with the occlusion into Saturday, however downstream
H5 ridging with continued upstream onshore Pacific flow / mid-level
disturbances. How well cold air entrenches remains to be seen but
betting on seasonable, dry conditions over the weekend under W/NW
winds.

Early next week...

Little to no confidence. 17.0z EC suggests a quick-moving, weak-wave
disturbance Monday that'll deliver snow prior to the holidays while
16.12z ECens members, 17.0z GFS / GEFS have low probabilities of
such an outcome. Series of Pacific waves, the second potentially
amplifying the first by downshearing N-stream energy / Arctic air if
the longwave pattern isn't flat. A more amplified pattern looks to
emerge into late December as outlined in the OVERVIEW section as the
NW Pacific / W CONUS split-flow regime acts to amplify E CONUS H5
ridging. All in due time we'll have a better pattern recognition to
filter through the noise and nuances.
