.SYNOPSIS...
Colder conditions but with a few showers today. The colder
weather continues tomorrow. A significant coastal storm may
impact the region this weekend with heavy rainfall, strong
coastal winds and minor coastal flooding, with some wet snow or
mixed precipitation possible at the onset over the higher
terrain. Unsettled weather pattern with showers at times persist
into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
645 AM update...

Mid level low is over New Eng and will be moving to the east
today. However, models show deeper moisture within the comma
head wrapping around the low and to the south into New Eng.
This moisture combined with steep low level lapse rates will
bring a few showers to mainly eastern MA later this morning
into mid afternoon. Otherwise, expect lots of clouds rotating
south into the region, especially east of the CT valley, with
clearing from west to east mid/late afternoon.

The steep lapse rates will also tap modest 30-40 kt LLJ
rotating N-S across the region this afternoon and evening,
yielding breezy conditions with some wind gusts 30+ mph at
times. Gusts should remain generally below wind advisory
criteria.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Overnight...
As drier air continues to spill in and erode the moisture layer
trapped below, expect clearing through the evening. Although
cold advection continues and clearing is expected, the advancing
high pres and deep low pres across the maritimes will maintain a
fairly robust sfc pres gradient. This should maintain at least
some sfc winds, limiting radiational cooling processes. However,
lows should still drop into the 30s with some spots below
freezing if there is some minor decoupling. Near shore locations
are least likely to see any radiational cooling as winds would
be strongest there.

Thu...
Core of cold air settles across the region colocated with high
pres ridge shifting E. Mainly sunny conditions will lead to
mixing but with H85 temps still about 2 std deviations colder
than normal, this will limit highs to the upper 40s and low 50s
across much of the region. Breezy, but not as strong as today
given weaker winds aloft.

Thursday night into Friday...

High pres builds into New Eng resulting in diminishing wind and
mainly clear skies Thu night with sunshine giving way to increasing
clouds Fri ahead of upstream trough. Cold night Thu night with lows
mostly in the 20s with low/mid 30s in normally warmer spots in
Boston, adjacent to Narragansett Bay and outer Cape/ACK/BID. Temps
recovering to the mid/upper 40s Fri.

Saturday into Saturday night...

Models continue to advertise a significant coastal storm to affect
the region, but specific details with respect to timing and precip
amounts remain somewhat uncertain. GFS is about 6 hours slower than
consensus of the guidance with low level jet and onset of heavier
precip and also quite a bit more robust with heavy rainfall for
Cape/Islands. GEFS and EPS ensembles indicate the most likely
scenario is for 1-2 inches of rain, heaviest across eastern New Eng
where locally higher amounts are possible. Rain should begin by late
Fri night and heaviest during Sat. Regarding ptype issues for the
interior, both ECMWF and GFS continue to indicate a marginally cold
column at the onset across interior northern MA for the possibility
of some brief snow or mixed precip late Fri night/early Sat, but any
minor accum would be confined to higher terrain in the Berkshires.

Strong coastal wind will likely be the biggest impact with this
storm. 50-60 kt easterly low level jet lifts north across the region
Sat with the peak of the wind anomalies 3-4 SD above normal which is
pretty significant at this time range. With mild SST promoting a
well mixed boundary layer, a lot of this wind should mix down along
the immediate coast. Potential for at least wind advisory wind gusts
to 50+ mph Sat along the coast, especially Cape/Islands.

Timing of the low level jet will be critical to coastal flood
potential during the Sat afternoon high tide which is the higher of
the high tides. Latest indications are that the strongest winds may
coincide near the time of high tide, but highest surge will be after
this high tide and highest seas will likely occur during the late
Sat night tide cycle which is about a foot lower. Current thinking
is worst case would be minor coastal flooding during the Sat
afternoon and Sat night tide cycles.

Sunday through Tuesday...

Lots of spread among the guidance with the surface pattern so low
confidence in details as well as temps/wind. However, it is looking
like an unsettled period with rain/showers at times as multiple
shortwaves rotate around high amplitude long wave trough across
eastern US. Timing of these shortwaves will be the challenge which
will affect timing of wet periods. Another coastal low may develop
Tue but will depend on the amplitude of the mid level trough
approaching the coast.

Mix of MVFR/VFR cigs with a few showers, mainly across eastern
MA. Improving conditions and clearing from west to east during
the mid/late afternoon. NW gusts to 25-30 kt developing in the
afternoon.

Tonight and Thu...High confidence.
Mainly VFR as skies clear tonight. Winds shift mainly NW but
weaker than today, around 10 kt sustained with gusts to 20 kt
but mainly on the coast.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence overall.
IFR CIGS should mix out to MVFR later this AM, then become BKN
low end VFR late this morning and afternoon. Occasional SHRA
possible. W-NW winds increasing.

KBDL Terminal...
Mainly VFR from this point.  Winds increasing today.
