.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front slowly lifts to the north into Friday with
gradually moderating temperatures. A front then stalls out to
the south into Saturday, with a return to spring to most of
southern New England. This front then pushes to the south
Saturday, ushering in chilly and wet conditions behind it. A
cold front then pushes through late Monday, with some showers
ahead of it. Weak high pressure then builds in towards the
middle of next week, with mainly dry and seasonable conditions
over the region.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
400 AM Update...

Spot shower or two is possible across northern MA early this
morning. This is sue to weak shortwave pushing across southern New
England. Mosaic radar does show a few echoes, but obs and webcams
are not indicating any of the precip is making it to the surface.
Batch of clouds will also push through early this morning, leading
to a sunny start this morning. Otherwise, temperatures this morning
have already bottom out as WAA is beginning to push into the
area.

Today...

High pressure anchored over the southeast CONUS as surface low over
the Great Lakes pushes into northern New England. Dry weather to
start, as warm front moves northward into the region. Isentropic
lift ahead of this front will return some widespread light rain to
the region for the afternoon into the late evening hours. Best
chance of seeing the steadier precip will be for areas north of the
Mass Pike.

Highs today look to be in the 50s for most area, although some high
terrain parts of the Berkshires may only reach into the upper 40s.
Winds do look light enough earlier in the day for the sea breeze to
develop. This will keep locations along the coastline cooler than
the interior. Pretty strong LLJ will develop during the afternoon
behind the warm front. This will push the sea breeze back over the
waters and lead to an increase in surface winds. However, the LLJ
winds do not max out until tonight. So gusts could be closer to 15-
20 MPH.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Tonight...

Fast zonal flow will continue across the area as strong LLJ. pushes
into the region. Mid-level ridge will slowly build overnight as WAA
continues. Plenty of clouds around which will keep temps into the
low to upper 40s.

The main focus for the overnight will be the winds. 925mb LLJ will
increase to 65-75 kts tonight. These types of winds would result in
gusts near 50-60 MPH. However, there is quite a strong inversion in
place and climatologically its not quite favorable for these types of
winds to occur. Bufkit soundings also keeping the winds at bay, thus
will anticipate southwest gusts around 30-35 MPH esp for the south
coast and islands. Plan on holding off on any wind advisories at
this time but if mixing increases then this may be needed.

Friday...

Southeast high pressure will continue to build and push into the New
England. Surface warm front will push through the area and into
northern New England.  A spot shower or two cannot be ruled out but
expect most of the region to remain dry. Since the area will be warm
sectored, expect temperatures to be more Spring-like. Highs will
remain into the low 70s to upper 60s. Unfortunately locations along
the south coastline will still feel the impacts from the cold
maritime air and remain in the 50s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Above normal temperatures Friday and possibly Saturday

* Unseasonably chilly Saturday night-Sunday night. There will be
  periods of rain, and even a low risk for a bit of light icing
  across interior northern MA.

* Temperatures approaching normals Monday, but with a windswept
  rain.

Overview and model preferences...
A zonal long range pattern, initially dominated by the S stream
will give way to meridional trof-ridge pattern by early next
week. This is forced by a Pacific wave, anomalously deep, which
gains some modified arctic air and introduces it to New England.
However, after a warm intrusion (with H92 temps 2 std
deviations above normal) through early Sat, a shallow backdoor
front will lead to a rapid cool-down into Sun, which will be
followed by synoptic cold associated with the modified
Pacific/arctic wave. Therefore, after a warm spell Fri and (for
some) Sat, a trend back to generally cool weather is expected
through early next week.

Details...

Fri night...
Warm front remains N of the region through the overnight hours.
H92 temps remain near +10C to +12C, such that even with mainly
clear skies, developing inversions would keep mins in the 40s.
Will need to monitor dwpts, which could hover in the low- mid
40s themselves, which is near or slightly higher than SSTs, such
that marine fog/stratus could impact S coastal regions under
warm frontal flow.

Sat...
The key for Sat will be a strong backdoor cold front, shallow
and modified by the cold SSTs in the Gulf of Maine. At odds is
how efficiently it is able to shift N-S. Parent sfc high pres to
the N is nearly 1040hPa over Quebec. However, noting that
ageostrophic flow in the lowest 50hPa is mainly W to start the
day before shifting to the N by the afternoon. This favors the
ECMWF timing of the cold front, which has been more persistently
slower than other models. It also has support from several of
its own ensemble and GEFs members. Therefore, will trend
highs/hourly temps toward this thinking but with at least some
deference to the colder/faster solutions. Therefore, temps on
Sat remain in flux, but will be learning on a warmer/slower
solution. Trapped moisture within the inversion could yield low
clouds and some light DZ following the frontal passage.

Sat night into Sun...
Backdoor front may stall across or just SW of New England Sat
night into Sun. Either way, colder airmass filters in with H92
temps dropping to nearly +4 to +7C, however this is dependent on
how far S the front travels. Also, sfc temps likely colder than
these values suggests given inversion maintenance. Mesoscale
processes forcing the front are limited and unlikely to be fully
resolved. So, while a big temperature swing is expected
compared to max temps Sat, whether they drop into the 30s (which
the colder ECMWF suggest) or warmer is still only a low to
moderate confidence forecast. In either case, trapped moisture
will yield a risk for light SHRA/DZ continuing behind the front.
The risk for early Sun freezing precip is low as even sfc dwpts
could remain above 0C, but something that bares watching if the
colder solutions verify, best chance will be across N MA, but
temps will be marginal.

Mon...
A combination of rising PWATs (nearly 1.5in or almost 3 std
deviations above mid April normals), strong overrunning ahead of
the stalled frontal boundary (the entire low pres system is
occluding) and strong LLJ 50-06 kt will lead to widespread
rainfall with a slight erring toward the latter half of the day
for the heaviest rainfall. This is due to the possibility of a
triple point low passage, which could increase localized
convergence during the afternoon/evening hours. In spite of the
stalled front remaining to the SW until occlusion/cold front
temps could still warm to near seasonal normal values but this
will need to be watched, as the frontal location and temps Sun
could define the temps on Mon as well. Overall, a wet period
expected, with a low risk for strong winds dependent on mixing.

Mid next week...
Trend back to colder than normal as the modified trof settles
further E followed the sfc low pres passage. Trend toward drier
but cold conditions expected.
