.SYNOPSIS...
Cold front is moving The high moves offshore Friday and gives
way to some liover SE Mass is slowly moving offshore. Rain and
snow across the region will diminish through early morning with
cooler drier air by morning. A series of lows will track over
or near southern New England this weekend, yielding milder
temperatures and periods of rain. However, some ice is possible
across northern Massachusetts Saturday night. Dry and seasonably
cold weather returns early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
Radar shows the back edge of precipitation from Nashua to
Windsor Locks, with a trend that would bring it to the coast
around 1 AM, possibly a little later on Cape Cod/Islands. This
shows a diminishing trend on current precipitation.
We will allow the Winter headlines to expire, but issue an SPS
to cover any remaining slippery conditions.

Thursday...
Dry post frontal airmass overspreads the region. However cold
its cold with 925 mb temps only -10C at 18z over the area. So
colder than normal tomorrow along with a chilly NW wind.
Thursday night...
Chilly night as cold high pressure builds over the area. Thus
mostly clear, light winds and dry airmass will support mins in
the teens most areas with single digits northwest MA. Thus
leaned toward the colder MOS guid here.

Overview...
The progressive mid level steering flow will continue to
dominate across the northeast through most of this extended
period as high pressure extending from the Bahamas to the
central Atlantic will try to push milder mid level heights
toward the eastern seaboard. This will also keep the baroclinic
zone close to or across the region, allowing weak short wave to
push across. So, will see some periods of mainly rain especially
during the daytime. However, as temperatures fall to near or
below freezing during the overnight hours this weekend into
early next week, there may also be a wintry mix at times across
the interior.
One system working out of the SE U.S. late Saturday should pass
S of the region Sat night into Sun, but could bring some
heavier rainfall especially across southern areas as PWATs
increase to 1 to 1.3 inches, which is highly anomalous for mid
February.
Will see a few dry periods as well as high pressure ridges also
move along in the fast flow aloft.
Details...
Friday and Friday night...High confidence.
High pressure will cross the region through midday or so
Friday. With a continued W-NW wind flow in place, will see
chilly temps that day as daytime highs will run about 5 to 10
degrees below seasonal normals.
Clouds will increase during the day, however, as a baroclinic
zone approaches from the W. This will allow winds to back to
S-SW by Friday evening, so will see a non-diurnal temp trend Fri
night as warm air advection works in. Increasing overrunning
with the increasing southerly flow, so will see light snow break
out starting late Friday afternoon across the E slopes of the
Berkshires then push E during the night. As temps start to rise
to freezing and above across S coastal areas, any snow will mix
with then eventually change to rain which will progress
northward after midnight mainly across the coastal plain.
Not a whole lot of QPF associated with this feature, so snow
amounts should be on the light side, generally 1-2 inches near
and north of the Mass Pike and an inch or less south of there.
May need to watch for potential slippery travel conditions
during the Friday evening commute especially across the Route 2
corridor and possibly as far south as the Mass Pike.
Also noting a strong low level jet, on the order of 35-40 kt
from H925-H95, up to 50 kt from H9 to H95, but low level lapse
rates do not increase to allow for good mixing until around or
after midnight. The wind gusts looks to be limited to along
coastal areas as well as the inland higher terrain, with gusts
up to around 20 kt, though higher across the eastern coastal
waters.
Saturday...Moderate confidence.
Any leftover precip from the wave moving along the overall
baroclinic zone across the region should briefly taper off as
temps continue to rise. Not much more in the way of snow
accumulations Saturday morning.
Looks like another weak short wave in the S-SW flow aloft, so
will see more light rain develop by mid morning Saturday, with
the best chances across southern areas during Saturday
afternoon. Temps will continue to rise, topping off in the upper
30s to mid 40s across northern Mass and the E slopes of the
Berkshires, ranging to the mid-upper 40s across RI/SE interior
Mass.
Saturday night through Sunday night...Moderate confidence.
12Z model suite and ensembles continue to signal more active
weather during this timeframe. Another area of low pressure will
push NE close to or just S of the the region late Saturday
night through a good chunk of Sunday. With a general light E-NE
wind flow in place, could see temps could fall close to or below
freezing across the far interior. So, could see a period of
freezing rain which may trigger headlines across portions of the
Route 2 corridor into the Mass portion of the CT valley and E
slopes of the Berkshires.
Also noting higher QPF amounts pushing in across central and
southern areas Sat night and Sun as a PWAT plume works up the
coast across mainly southern areas. PWAT values could rise to 1
to 1.3 inches late Sat night and Sunday, which is close to
record levels as seen on the SPC sounding climo data. Have kept
LKLY POPs across most areas, with the best chance across N CT/RI
into SE Mass.
Precip should shift off the S coast Sunday evening as temps
fall back to the 20s across the interior to the lower-mid 30s
along the coast.
Monday through Wednesday...Moderate confidence.
The progressive mid level steering pattern continues, it
becomes more zonal early next week. Large high pressure should
push across the northeast into Quebec Monday through Monday
night with daytime highs running around 5 degrees above
seasonal normals for mid February.
Model solution spread in place with next approaching system
sometime Tuesday into Wednesday thanks to fast flow aloft.
Lowered confidence on timing and track of approaching weak low
pressure that may run up the east coast toward Cape Cod by
around Wed morning or so. This could be another batch of light
rain, with some sleet and/or freezing rain possible at the
onset early Tuesday, as well as during the overnight hours
Tuesday night.
