.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system will bring mostly rain this afternoon into
tonight, except snow changing to rain across higher elevations
of the Berkshires with light accumulations. A strong cold front
will move through late tonight followed by blustery and cold
weather Monday. Another storm will bring interior snow and
snow to rain along the coast Wednesday into Wednesday night
followed by cold and dry weather Thursday and Friday. Active
weather returns for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

*** A period of heavy rain tonight with localized urban and
 poor drainage street flooding ***

One area of rain moving across SE MA and Cape/Islands while
some light precip moves into SNE from the west. Initially
precip will be snow over the Berkshires with minor accum
expected but the snow will change to rain by late afternoon or
early evening with western Franklin county last to see
changeover. Expecting an inch or 2 accum over the higher
elevations in the Berkshires with locally up to 3 inches in
western Franklin county.

Noting area of heavier rain lifting NE from mid Atlc region and
this will be impacting SNE tonight. Decent low level jet which
has increased to 60-70 kt will advect high PWATs northward into
SNE. PWAT anomaly +2SD and low level wind anomaly 2-3SD,
combined with with right entrance region of upper jet will
result in a period of heavy rainfall tonight. System is
progressive so this will limit rainfall to 0.50-1.00 inch across
much of SNE, but heavier amounts expected along the south coast
and especially Cape/Islands where greatest PWAT/wind anomalies
are focused along with coastal wave tracking across SE New Eng
increasing low level convergence. Also, there is some elevated
instability at the nose of the jet which supports heavier
downpours and isold thunder. Some of the hi-res guidance
indicate localized amounts 1.50-2.00 inches which can't be ruled
out, especially with any convective elements. This will likely
result in the typical urban and poor drainage steel flooding,
but river flooding is not anticipated.

Heaviest rainfall around 02-06z SE New Eng then ending from
west to east overnight as dry slot moves in.

Regarding wind potential, core of the low level jet is focused
across the Cape/Islands where low level inversion is strongest.
However, good pressure falls may be able to make up for this a

Monday...
Post frontal airmass with gusty NW winds in cold advection
pattern. Wind gusts 25-35 mph expected. Mainly dry weather but
an area of clouds will likely move through during the morning
as mid level shortwave swings through and a few flurries
possible over the Berkshires. Otherwise, increasing sunshine in
the afternoon. Temps steady or slowly falling, especially in
western New Eng where advection is strongest.

Monday night...
Center of high pres moves off the mid Atlc coast with surface
ridging across SNE. Clear skies and diminishing wind, but
mid/high clouds will overspread the region overnight as mid
level shortwave approaches. Lows mostly in the teens.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights...

* Seasonable and mainly dry on Tuesday
* Another passing storm system with snow/rain potential on Wednesday
* Cool and dry for Thursday and Friday

Overview...

Very progressive and active pattern continues through the long term.
Broad upper level trough across a large portions of the CONUS
downstream from a persistent and strong pacific ridge. Several waves
from the Pacific Northwest will move into the flow through the
period resulting in active weather. Building subtropical ridge over
the Atlantic will put southern New England along the baroclinic
zonal as each wave rides through the flow. A slight shift west or
east in the path of each storm will result in less or more wintry
weather. However, latest trends in the ensembles continue to suggest
that winter precip will occur during the mid-week event and again
during the weekend.

Details...

Monday Night into Tuesday...High confidence.

High pressure sliding south of the region Monday night will lead to
mainly clear skies and light winds. Temperatures will fall back into
the teens and single digits.

Weak northern stream wave will move through the flow on Tuesday.
While the region should remain dry, there may be enough moisture for
a shower or two as WAA begins to push into the area. Still an
overall pleasant day with temps warming into the mid to upper 30s.

Wednesday...Moderate confidence.

Pacific northwest shortwave will dive into the CONUS early this week
and begin to move through the trough. This wave will eject out of
the Rockies and dig into the Southeast. High pressure over the
Bahamas will help steer developing surface low up towards the
Appalachian mountain spine towards southern New England.

Exact location and strength of the surface low as it moves through
the area is still uncertain as guidance continues to show large
spread. Thermal issues are also something to closely watch which will
determine rain or snow. The 00z EC continues to remain the warmest
of the models with the GFS the coolest and the CMC and UKMET
inbetween. Trended towards a blend of the guidance which puts snow
north of the Pike and snow switching to rain south of the Pike. Both
GEFS and EPS also indicate this potential with high probs of 6+
inches across the route 2 corridor. This also aligns with the latest
runs of the CIPS Analogs. Overall the trend is increasing for
plowable snowfall along and north of the Pike, with perhaps 6+
inches near the MA/NH border.

As mentioned above, there will be p-type issues south of the Pike and
especially south and west of the I-95 corridor. Still a bit to early
to throw out specifics but with overrunning precip ahead of
approaching warm front, could see snow to start early Wednesday
morning. As the front pushes through, and if surface temps are warm
enough, the snow will transition to rain during the day. As the low
pulls to the northeast, CAA will usher in on the backside which
could result in rain transition back to snow. Gulf moisture pushing
PWATs values over 0.75 inches, or 2-3 STD above normal, combined
with strong LLJ could result in moderate to heavy rainfall is some
locations.

Again still a lot of variables with this system. Ideally
predictability should begin to improve over the next day or two as
main shortwave moves onshore. Once spread decreases then more
confidence can be thrown at this forecast. For now, it is something
to watch in the coming days.

Thursday and Friday...Moderate confidence.

Clouds will linger behind the passing storm system as upper level
trough axis lags a bit. Another arctic front will push through
resulting in gusty northwest winds and a few LES streamers if they
can make it over the Berks. High pressure will pass south of the
area late Thursday into Friday. Seasonal temperatures through this
period.

The Weekend...Low confidence.

Active weather continues during the weekend. Appears that a quick
moving clipper will move through the area late Friday into Saturday.
Another low pressure system may move up the Eastern Seaboard around
Sunday/Monday.
