.SYNOPSIS...
Clouds will increase tonight as bands of showers push east
mainly after midnight. A cold front will cross the region early
Sunday morning, bringing blustery and chilly conditions through
Sunday night. One cold front moves through on Tuesday, bringing
scattered showers as well as an isolated snow shower in the
hills. Dry and colder air then pours in for Wednesday and
Thursday. High pressure brings dry and more seasonable weather
for Friday and Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...

850 pm Update...

While mainly dry weather will persist for the rest of the
evening...increased pops significantly after midnight and
especially toward morning based on potent upper level
shortwave/cold pool aloft approaching from the west. 500T drop
to around -30C with a period of strong forcing/deeper moisture
working across the region. This should result in a period of
widespread showers overnight into early Sunday morning across
most of the region. There are also steep mid level lapse rates
coupled with a -EPV signature...so would not be surprised if
there is even a rumble of thunder.

Boundary layer is mild enough to support all rain across the
majority of the region. However...enough dynamic cooling may
result in some wet snow flakes mixed in at times across the
highest terrain. There is even a low risk for a very small snow
accumulation on grassy surfaces at elevations near or above 1500
feet along the east slopes of the Berks.

Low temps by daybreak will mainly be in the upper 30s to the
lower 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Sunday...

May see some leftover snow showers across the Worcester hills
early Sunday morning before ending as the moisture shifts
steadily E. Remainder of the precip should push offshore by
around midday.

As the cold front pushes offshore, expect blustery NW winds to
kick in as colder air works in. H85 temps will drop during the
day, down to -5C to -7C late in the day. Expect gusts up to
25-35 mph with good mixing in place, possibly a bit higher
across the higher terrain. With the dropping H85 temps, expect
highs only in the lower-mid 40s well inland and across the
hills, ranging to the lower-mid 50s along the immediate coast.

Sunday night...

NW winds will steadily diminish, mainly less than 10 kt around
or after midnight as high pressure ridge slowly pushes E across
NY state. With mostly clear skies, should see some good
radiational cooling, allowing temps to drop.

Should see readings bottom out in the 20s across most
locations, including Martha's Vineyard and the immediate coast
where a frost or freeze has not occurred. Have issued a Freeze
Watch for most of the coastal locations that have not dropped
below freezing yet.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Big Picture...

Next week starts with a broad trough over the Great Lakes and
Northeast, while a ridge lingers over the Pacific Northwest.
That ridge is paired with a trough over the Desert Southwest,
creating a block that channels most of the airflow into northern
Canada before moving through the eastern trough.

One shortwave moves off through the Maritimes Monday. A second
shortwave approaches through the Great Lakes Tuesday and crosses
New England Wednesday. Models agree on evolving the shortwave
into a Maritime closed low Thursday. By this time the northwest
ridge moves east and flattens across the country, evolving into
a more zonal flow for the end of the week.

500-mb height values will be below normal Monday through Thursday,
then near normal Friday and Saturday. 850-mb thermal fields are
below normal Monday, near normal Tuesday, below normal
Wednesday through Friday, then near normal Saturday. This
suggests a cool start to the week, a brief return to normal
temps Tuesday, then below normal temps Wednesday through Friday.

Model mass fields are similar through midweek, with model-to-model
differences developing over the Western USA Thursday and
becoming more widespread Friday and Saturday. Forecast
confidence through Wednesday is high or uncertainty is
low...depending on how you look at it. By the end of the
week...confidence trends to low/uncertainty trends to high.

Concerns...

Monday...

Sfc high pressure over the Eastern and Southern USA with the
ridgeline starting the day over New England. This trends east
and offshore during the day. RH cross-sections show moisture
moving into New England during the morning, but with a dry
layer below 3000 feet AGL. The areal pattern of the RH suggests
a warm frontal cloud pattern, as do the developing southwest
winds and warm advection. Expect a lot of clouds, but dry
weather, for Monday. Mixing to 900 mb or a little above, with
temps at that level supporting max temps in the upper 40s and
lower 50s. Winds in the mixed layer are forecast as high as 20
kt, but with a couple of possible 25 kt values. We will stay
with the 20 kt forecast.

Monday night-Tuesday...

Upper shortwave and sfc cold front move through Tuesday morning,
supported by the nose of a 105 kt upper jet. Moisture and lift
are limited, but enough that when combined with the upper
dynamics should generate scattered showers, possibly mixing with
light snow showers in the western hills. Showers move off by
Tuesday evening. Mixing to 850 mb supports gusts to 20 kts and
max temps in the upper 50s and low 60s. Model values are a
little lower than this, so we will bump them up a couple of
degrees.

Tuesday night through Thursday night...

Upper trough lingers aloft with cold pool advection from
Tuesday night through Thursday. The formation of the closed low
noted above serves to maintain the flow of colder air through
Thursday. The low then moves off to the east Friday. This along
with the larger pattern suggest a period of below normal
temperatures.

RH patterns suggest partial clearing Tuesday night but at least
residual clouds for both Tuesday night and Wednesday. An
appreciable pressure gradient should support northwest to north
winds Wednesday and Thursday, then diminishing wind Friday.
Temps aloft suggest max temps in the 40s to low 50s. Based on
upstream dew points in Canada, expect min temps in the 30s
Wednesday night and 20s Thursday night...except near freezing
along the coast.

Friday-Saturday...

High pressure builds over the region Friday. This will provide
lighter wind and a trend toward more seasonable temperatures.

A developing weather system over the Gulf of Mexico is expected
to move up the Carolina coast Saturday. This may spread some
clouds our way during Saturday but otherwise a dry day. There
remains a spread of potential tracks for this weather system,
and most of them remain well offshore. None of these affect our
area before the end of the forecast period.

the expected return of the wind. Some visibility restrictions
in scattered showers and patchy fog overnight.

Sunday and Sunday night...

With strong cold air working in across the milder ocean waters,
NW winds will gust up to 25-35 kt. Have issued Gale Warnings for
most of the waters for Sunday, which should diminish to Small
Crafts Sun night. Seas up to 5-8 ft on the outer waters. May see
leftover scattered showers Sunday morning to midday.
