.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure, dry today with exception of ocean effect rain / snow
showers over the Cape Cod and southeast coastal MA. Major winter
storm Wednesday into early Thursday with significant wet snow and
wind. Latest forecasts suggest interior locations will receive the
heaviest snowfall with the rain/snow line setting up near the I-95
corridor. Mainly dry and seasonable weather follows later Thursday
into the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

10 am update...

Today...

Near-seasonable day on tap under the influence of high pressure
and light winds. Mixing out to about H85 where a cold airmass
lingers around -6 to -8C with northerly winds persisting. Ocean-
effect clouds and a mix of flurries / drizzle persists along the
E-coast. Warmer out towards the CT River Valley, cooler E beneath
the blanket of overcast marine-layer clouds not expected to
clear out anytime soon. Low 40s W, upper 30s E. Strongest N
winds 10 to 15 mph, gusts up to 25 mph along the E MA coast.

Tonight...

Increasing clouds, light snow moving in as S/SW flow persists,
the initial fringe of isentropic upslope of moisture emerging
out ahead of an area of low pressure building into the Ohio
River Valley. Considering column moistening, dry air lingering,
expect light snow to move into the region closer to day break,
the majority of the evening remaining dry. Northeasterly winds
continue but lessening with high pressure pushed off E and low
pressure coming in from the W, the associated warm front kinked
S/W up against cold air damming, the over-running scenario
evolving.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Highlights...

* Strong Nor'easter will impact southern New England Wed into Thurs
* Potential for heavy wet snowfall north & west of rain/snow line
* ENE wind gusts between 45 to 60 MPH are possible along the coast
* Still some uncertainty near the I-95 on rain vs heavy wet snow
* Renewed river flooding is possible across southeast MA

Overview....

Complex upper flow pattern as a potent low pressure system out of
Hudson Bay merges with the Midwestern low. Together these
disturbances will undergo rapid intensification off the eastern
seaboard, resulting in a strong coastal low moving over/near
Nantucket and into the Gulf of Maine. This upper level pattern will
take on a negative tilt as 700 mb low will cut-off. This combined
with strong easterly jet nearing 4-5 STD below normal will help
result in additional upslope enhancement. This system will
eventually get wrapped up in the broader flow late in the week, but
for now will just focus on the storm. Details Below:

Snow and P-type...

Surface low track will help identify where the thermal issues will
be resolved, as deepening surface low moves near Nantucket. This
will result in a very sharp rain vs snow gradient near the I-95
corridor. Also looking at 700 mb RH fields and snow growth region,
could see a dry slot moving into southern RI, southeastern MA, Cape
and Islands. As prev forecaster mentioned, this is a very difficult
forecast in that region as a small change in storm track will have a
big impact on specific outcomes. Probabilistic snowfall graphics are
still encouraged for this location. Because of this uncertainty,
left some locations in the watch and will let next shift have a
better look.

Went ahead and upgraded the watch to a warning for locations west of
the I-95 corridor where confidence was highest in at least 6 inches
of snowfall will occur. In fact, models continue to show very robust
QPF with 850 mb moisture flux nearing 2 STD above normal which could
help increase QPF amounts a bit more than what guidance is showing.
This much QPF combined with high snowfall ratios across western MA
could see snowfall amounts between 10-15 inches. Eastern flow along
the Worcester Hills and the east slope of the Berkshires will result
in some local enhancements, leading to amounts closer to 12-18
inches, locally higher amounts possible. Another region to watch is
just north and west of where the rain/snow line ends up. This could
result in some locally higher amounts of over a foot. However, this
area could see more of the heavy wet snowfall which could lead to
down limbs and power outages. As the storm begins to pull away,
appears that a deformation zone will set up across northeast MA
enhancing snowfall amounts. Lastly, we could see some shadowing in
the valley regions, but would need high-res guidance is truly
capture this potential.

All in all this a solid snow event away from the BOS to PVD corridor
leading to travel issues as well as impacts especially as the region
is still cleaning up from the previous storm.

Snow Impacts...

Models are consistent in showing 30 to 60+ units of omega in the
snow growth region which would support 3 inch per hour snowfall
rates and even thundersnow. This amount of snow in a short amount of
time will make travel difficult and result in very low vsbys. Time
frame for this to occur will be Wednesday afternoon into early
Thursday morning. Expect the Wednesday evening rush hour to
significantly impacted.

We also need to watch the snowfall potential near the rain/snow
line. Snow ratios will be a lot lower leading to heavy wet snowfall.
Only a few inches will start to bring down tree limbs and
powerlines, an issue that southern New England does not need right
now. Lastly, as the system wraps around we could see some blowing
and drifting snowfall especially out west by Thursday.

Strong Winds...

As mentioned above, this deepening low pressure system will have an
anomalous jet associated with it. In fact 925 mb winds increase out
of the east near 50 to 60 knots. Mixing this down we could see
around 45-60 MPH across the MA east coast and even into a portion of
the coastal plain. While this is not as strong as the prev system,
with many trees weakened and lots of damage around the area, this
could exacerbate the issue. Wind headlines will be needed, but
confidence was not high enough to go with a high wind watch.

Flooding...

This system will have a lot of moisture associated with it as
mentioned prev. Thus, will have to watch the rivers once again
especially if precip falls as rain across southeast MA. MMEFS
only show around 1-1.5 inches within the ensemble, which it
appears that there could be more. Thus could see area rivers
that already rose out of the banks go up again by late
Thursday/Friday.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...

Tricky forecast late this week into early next week. Just about
all the guidance develops a downstream blocking mid level ridge,
with an axis around Labrador and Newfoundland. This ridge will
make it tough for our next Nor'easter to move away from our
region very quickly. This should keep at least a small risk for
some rain or snow showers near our region, especially towards
the coast. Much of southern New England should be dry for time
this weekend.

Sunday night and Monday...

We are monitoring the potential for another coastal storm during
this time. Right now, there is a risk for more rain and/or snow,
depending upon the timing. Snow would be more likely during the
nighttime hours. Still many days to go before the details of
this system come into better focus. Will continue to favor a
consensus approach to smooth over the less predictable details.

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

VFR. But some FEW-SCT MVFR over E MA lingers. NE winds persist,
strongest E coast 10-15 kts with gusts up to 25 kts.

Tonight...
VFR lowering to IFR towards daybreak with onset of -SN/-RA. VSBY
impacts more so with -SN. NE winds lessened. Impacts to AM push.

Wednesday into Wednesday night...
Winter storm. MVFR-IFR dominant. Lowest conditions along the
coast, however, with any SN/+SN expect IFR with CIGs down to
VV002. RA/SN line roughly BED to PVD, terminals surrounding
waffling in mixed precip-types while W of the line dominant SN.
E winds increasing, strongest towards evening persisting into
daybreak, highest winds along the coast 15 to 25 kts sustained
with gusts up to 50 kts, especially ocean-exposed terminals.
Prolonged winds Northeast MA.

Thursday...
Storm pulling away. Becoming SCT-BKN with low-end VFR CIGs at best,
but mainly MVFR-IFR. Winds turning NW, lessening, generally around
10 kts with gusts dropping off towards 15 to 20 kts. Strongest winds
during the AM push. VSBYs improving with SCT SHSN persisting, highest
confidence N/W.

KBOS Terminal...Forecast -SN into the AM push but not expecting
much in the way of impact, lowering to low-end VFR / MVFR mix.
Bulk of lower conditions towards midday. Precip-type tricky at
the terminal. Leaning presently more RA than SN.

KBDL Terminal...Expect -SN into the AM push to drop conditions
during the AM push to MVFR and perhaps IFR. Accumulations on
runways possible albeit expected to be light. The more moderate
to heavy snow expected towards noon with IFR persisting.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Saturday/...

Thursday: MVFR/IFR conditions possible. Strong winds with local
gusts to 40 kt. Chance SN, slight chance RA.

Thursday Night: Mainly VFR, with areas MVFR possible. Breezy.

Today...Winds will continue to diminish through the day,
dropping below Small Craft Advisory levels on some of the
nearshore waters. Very rough seas continue with 10-15 ft seas
eastern waters.

Tonight..NE winds below 25 kt with slowly subsiding seas, but
still 10+ feet on the eastern outer waters.

Wednesday and Thursday...Another Nor'easter moving over
Nantucket and up into the Gulf of Maine will bring very strong
winds and waves to the waters. Eastern waters will see the brunt
of this storm as easterly gales to near storms will occur
Wednesday before backing to the north by Thursday afternoon.
These winds will help build seas to 20-25 feet. Rain/snow will
occur through the period with vsbys dropping to 1 nm.

Outlook /Thursday Night through Saturday/...

Thursday: Low risk for gale force winds with gusts up to 40 kt.
Rough seas up to 24 ft. Chance of rain.

Thursday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Rough seas up to 14 ft.

Friday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up
to 25 kt. Areas of rough seas. Slight chance of rain showers.

Friday Night: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with

.HYDROLOGY...

Minor flooding continues along the Taunton and Pawtuxet Rivers.
Please see our latest Flood Warnings for more information on
these rivers.

Our next storm Wednesday into early Thursday may result in
renewed river flooding across RI/SE MA with the potential for 2+
inches of precipitation. This will depend on whether ptype falls
as mainly rain or an extended period of wet snow, which would
limit potential flooding impacts.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...

Coastal Flood Watch has been issued for the northeast
Massachusetts coast from Salisbury to Cape Ann.

For the Thursday early morning high tide, the greatest focus is
on the Massachusetts northeast coast from the New Hampshire
border to Cape Ann where a NE low level jet of 60+ knots may
produce a surge of 2.5 to 3 feet and large waves of 20 to 25
feet close to shore. Note that there is also a lingering swell
already in place from the last event. Coupled with an increased
vulnerability along the coast from the prior storm, moderate
impacts of coastal flooding and beach erosion are possible along
this reach of the shoreline. Erosion is a particular concern
for the Plum Island area for this storm.

For the rest of the Massachusetts ocean exposed east coast, we
may experience high enough water levels and wave action for
minor coastal flooding and some erosion. Relatively low
astronomical high tide cycles for this time period will mitigate
what might otherwise be a more significant impact. An Advisory
may need to be issued later for the reach of coastline from Hull
to Plymouth as well as north and northeast facing shorelines of
Cape Cod and Nantucket. The Thursday early morning high tide
cycle is the only high tide cycle of concern for this storm.
