Prior to their passage, a warm and dry southwest flow will keep temps well above average and RH values on the low side on Sunday. Lowest RHs and strongest s-swly sfc winds expected over the Palmer Divide and across the adjacent plains, i.e., Washington County, and eastern portions of the Adams and Arapahoe Counties beginning late morning through early eve. Potential gusts in the 25-40 mph range, min RHs in the 4-10 pct range, and temps in the mid to upper 60s, will combine to produce high to extreme wildfire behavior conditions in this area. Areas of blowing dust also a good bet in open areas on the plains. Therefore, the fire wx watch presently in effect for zones 41..45..46..47 and 49 will be updated to a Red Flag Warning for the period 18z/Sun to 02z/Mon. Meanwhile, the current Red Flag warning for the Palmer Divide and east central Colorado will be allowed to continue until 01z/Sun. Another weather maker to contend with tomorrow will be the strong, mainly dry cold front which models show slipping south out of sern WY mid-afternoon Sunday. Gusty and erratic winds along this boundary, and the gusty westerly gradient winds ahead of the front will further contribute to the elevated fire danger on the plains tomorrow afternoon. May also see near critical fireweather conditions tomorrow afternoon in Weld County and the Denver metro area. For now, wind speeds and RHs in this area appear only marginal. In the high country, should see a jet generated band of light to moderate snowfall move over the Park and rabbit ears ranges by around midday tomorrow, where we could see 2-5 inches of snow accumulate by evening. Heavier snowfall rates expected after 21z/Sun once cold air advection kicks in. Mtn ranges to the east- southeast expected to see snow developing by mid-afternoon, but snow chances look best beyond 00Z/Mon. In addition to the snow, strong west-northwest winds of 30-40kts expected to produce blowing snow in areas mainly above 10000 ft. For the reasons mentioned above, a winter weather advisory will go in effect for mtn zone 31 at 18z/Sun, and for mtn zones 33 and 34 a few hours later. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday) Issued at 245 PM MST Sat Mar 3 2018 Sunday night and Monday, strong wind the main concern in this period. The models continue to show strong cold air advection with strong downward QG following the passage of the trough axis Sunday night. The subsidence will be strongest around 12z Monday. In the mountains, best accumulating snowfall will be in zones 31 and 33 Sunday night when the strongest cold air advection, deepest moisture and strong orographics will be. Snow will be less of an issue in zone 34, but strong winds will make up for that especially along and east of the Continental Divide. As far as Winter Weather Advisory is concerned, more emphasis on snow for zones 31 and 33, with more emphasis on wind and blowing snow in 34. NAM12 spatial cross-sections show a brief mountain wave profile 09- 12z on Monday, then its all bora the rest of the way. Not sure high wind criteria will be met in the mountains and foothills so no watch there. Localized gusts to 70 mph however may occur late Sunday night. Good mixing, a strong mid level cold air advection and subsidence, along with a tight surface pressure gradient, will increase the high wind threat over the northeast plains with gusts to 60 mph on Monday. Main concern will be the I-76 corridor east of Fort Morgan. A High Wind Watch may be needed there. Elevated fire danger as well, in spite of cooler temperatures and higher relative humidities. Strong winds and dry fuels will likely overcompensate, reference the fire weather discussion below. Monday night into Tuesday, a strong northwesterly flow will remain in place. Snowfall will be diminishing in the high country however by midday Tuesday, with scattered snow showers confined to the higher west and northwest facing slopes until that time.
