gusts of 25 to 35 mph to produce extreme fire danger across the
northern Colorado mountains this afternoon and evening. The fire
danger will also be elevated on the plains, but the winds will not
be as strong. Conditions will not be as extreme on Friday, but
fire danger will still be very high, especially in the mountain
valleys.

.Very hot and very dry conditions with wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph
will continue to produce extreme fire danger across the northern 
Colorado mountains this afternoon and evening. The fire danger 
will also be elevated on the plains. In addition, isolated high 
based showers and thunderstorms will produce wind gusts to 50 mph
and possibly dry lightning. Little to no rainfall is expected. 

Conditions will not be as extreme on Friday, but fire danger will
still be very high, especially in the mountains and mountain 
valleys where winds will gust to 30 mph.

.Temperatures have cooled this evening along with diminishing
winds. This has offered some relief from the extreme fire danger
levels earlier today. Humidity recoveries are still expected to 
be poor overnight. The Red Flag Warning for this evening has been 
cancelled. 

Very hot and very dry conditions with wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph 
are expected again Friday which will produce extreme fire danger 
across the northern and central Colorado mountains Friday 
afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service in Denver has cancelled the Red Flag
Warning.

As temperatures have cooled this evening, relative humidity levels
have slowly increased. Winds have also diminished, helping to
reduce the fire danger levels and fire behaviors. Humidity
recovery is still expected to be poor overnight.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

A mid to upper level ridge has continued to build over New Mexico
today and subsidence from this will lead to dry conditions
tonight. Low temperatures will stay a few degrees above normal as
winds will remain light. Forecast highs on Wednesday are still on track to
be near records especially along the urban corridor.

The focus then shifts to the positioning of a shallow cold front
that will bring dew points in the upper 50s to low 60s into
northeast Colorado late tonight and into Wednesday. Models tend to
struggle in these scenarios so confidence will be low concerning
the intensity and coverage of thunderstorms tomorrow. If this
moisture were to push up into the foothills, scattered strong to
severe thunderstorms would be possible from the urban corridor to
the eastern plains. These storms would be aided by good mixed
layer CAPE of near 2500 J/kg along with sufficient 0-6km bulk
shear of 30-35 knots according to the NAM. With this scenario
possible, I tend to agree with SPC adding a marginal risk area
across northeast Colorado. Storms that do develop could produce
large hail due to nearly dry adiabatic mid level lapse rates as
well as gusty winds as forecast soundings show a bit of an
inverted-V structure. However, it is also possible that the
shallow moisture mixes out tomorrow afternoon and showers and
storms will stay weaker and isolated in nature. With that being
said, I have increased POPs tomorrow afternoon and evening to
account for the first scenario.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

Hot upper level ridge over Colorado will shift east of the state on
Thursday. This will cause the light westerly flow aloft to turn
southwesterly and become stronger through the day. Near record the
high temperatures and low relative humidities has prompted a fire
weather watch for the northern Front range foothills and nearby
plains, and high mountain valleys. The watch will run from late
Thursday morning until mid-evening on Thursday. Friday will be not
quite as hot with an upper level trough moving in from the west.
However, gusty southwest winds and low relative humidities will keep
the fire danger high in the areas mainly along and west of the
Continental Divide. East of the Divide, a morning cold front will
bring slightly cooler temperatures and higher humidities to the
plains, as well as a slight chance of late day storms. This cooling
trend will continue over the weekend, along with a better chance for
the thunderstorms and wetting rainfall with passage of the upper
level trough.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night)

VFR clear through the period. Wind direction the big issue, mainly
southerly drainage wind tonight, then a brief period 15-18z where
they shift around to the north then veer east then south by the
end of the day. Slight chance of thunderstorms late afternoon but
not big enough numbers to include in the forecast.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Fire danger will be elevated tomorrow due to hot temperatures and
low RHs. But due to the lighter winds, no highlights are anticipated
on Wednesday.

Hot temperatures, very low relative humidities, a high Haines Index,
and gusty southwest winds may combine with the dry fuels to create
high to extreme fire behavior conditions the mountain valleys, the
Park Range, the northern Front Range foothills and nearby plains on
Thursday. As a result, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for
Thursday. The critical fire weather conditions should start to improve
gradually by mid evening with decreasing temperatures and rising
humidities.

Increasing southwest flow aloft ahead of an approaching upper level
trough will warm temperatures even more, and lower relative
humidities across the forecast area. However, the stronger winds
are expected to be confined to the northern mountains, high
mountain valleys and the northern Front Range Foothills.

Could see a repeat of these conditions in about the same area on
Friday, although temperatures are not expected to be as warm.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected at this time. Hot weather will
be the rule today, with highs on the plains reaching well into the
90s and the mountains seeing temperatures in the 80s. Hot
temperatures and low humidity will combine to elevate fire danger.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

It will remain hot and dry through Friday with the hottest
temperatures expected on Thursday. Many locations on the plains
could reach or surpass the 100 degree mark Thursday afternoon.
Isolated high-based thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon and
evening could produce a few sprinkles, wind gusts and perhaps a
lightning strike or two. The near record hot temperatures, low
humidity and somewhat stronger winds on Thursday will further
increase the fire danger in many areas. An upper level trough and
associated cold front will bring a respite from the heat by the
weekend with a chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly for the
high plains.
