warmer temperatures combine with gusty winds and very low
humidities.

Fire danger may become extreme in some areas by Thursday as winds
continue to strengthen in a very warm and dry airmass. The
highest danger on Thursday will likely develop from South Park
and the Southern Foothills across the Palmer Divide area.
Critical conditions will be possible farther north, but
confidence is not as high north of I-76.

MOST OF THE NORTHEAST COLORADO PLAINS TODAY...

.Another day of strong winds and low humidities will create high
fire danger. Fire danger is expected to reach extreme levels 
from South Park and the Southern Front Range Foothills eastward across
the Palmer Divide area through Limon. Those extreme conditions may
should spread north into the Denver Metro area this afternoon,
while farther north toward Fort Collins, Greeley, and Fort Morgan,  
windy conditions will develop later and the humidities will be a 
bit higher. However, Red Flag conditions are still expected to 
develop late this afternoon into early evening. 

Cooler temperatures but shifting winds to the northwest will
arrive with a strong cold front early this evening. Winds will
remain strong and gusty through Saturday, but humidities will be
improving and some snow is expected, easing the fire danger.

.Another day of strong winds and low humidities will create high
fire danger. Fire danger is expected to reach extreme levels from
South Park and the Southern Front Range Foothills eastward across
the Palmer Divide area through Limon. Those extreme conditions
may should spread north into the Denver Metro area this afternoon,
while farther north toward Fort Collins, Greeley, and Fort
Morgan, windy conditions will develop later and the humidities
will be a bit higher. However, Red Flag conditions are still
expected to develop late this afternoon into early evening.

Cooler temperatures but shifting winds to the northwest will
arrive with a strong cold front early this evening. Winds will
remain strong and gusty through Saturday, but humidities will be
improving and some snow is expected, easing the fire danger.

The National Weather Service in Denver will the Red Flag Warning
to expire at 9 PM MDT.

A strong cold front sliding south across northeast Colorado this
evening will bring cooler temperatures and higher humidity to the
area for the rest of tonight. Though winds will remain gusty
behind the front in the 15 to 30 mph range for the remainder of
the night. Because of the cooler and more humid conditions, the 
Red Flag Warning will be allowed to expire at 9 PM MDT.

WNW flow aloft will be in place today and become more WLY tonight.
Although it will be dry through tonight, cross-sections show some
higher moisture will affect the area this aftn and tonight, with
potential for wave clouds along the front range.

Meanwhile as for highs, 850-700 mb temps rise from 8 to 9 degrees c
this aftn so readings across the plains will be in the upper 60's to
lower 70's.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

...Warmer temperatures and gusty winds through Thursday will bring
high fire danger...

Strong west/southwest flow aloft ahead of a digging trough will
bring warmer temperatures and gusty winds to the forecast area. On
Wednesday, a fast moving upper level disturbance (the one
reaching northern California today) will move across to our north.
This will only bring a couple light showers at most to the high
country, but more importantly increase the winds and downslope
drying due to subsidence behind the short wave. See Fire Weather
Discussion below for impacts. High temperatures will reach the
upper 70s in the lower elevations with wind gusts reaching 25 to
35 mph, and up to 45 mph in the foothills.

By Thursday, a deeper upper level trough will move into the Great
Basin with flow aloft strengthening further. Deep surface low
pressure will develop in northeast Colorado. We look for another
warm but windier day across most of the forecast area, although
locations northeast of Denver could stay a little cooler and less
windy depending on exactly where surface low pressure develops. By
late afternoon, there should be enough lift ahead of the trough
to bring late day showers and isolated thunderstorms to the
mountains.

Showers will become more widespread across the high country
Thursday night and turn to all snow. At this time, mainly light to
moderate snow accumulations are expected Thursday night into
Friday across the mountains.

There's still some uncertainty with regard to this next storm as
it develops in the Central and Northern Plains. Models are still
fairly consistent with an elongated upper low initially developing
over Wyoming and Colorado Thursday night into early Friday
morning, and then pushing just to our east before maturing into a
full spring cyclone across the Central Plains with severe storms
in the lower Arkansas/Mississippi River Valley, and a shield of
snow and blowing snow over the Northern High Plains/Upper
Midwest. Overall, it still appears we will be on the back edge of
the precipitation shield, and any threat of light accumulating
snow would stay over the eastern Colorado plains. We are certain
that it will be windy and colder over the entire forecast area by
Friday on the back side of this storm. However, there may be some
shallow anticyclonic flow along the I-25 Corridor which could
keep winds down and bring a few snow showers. We'll continue to
monitor this dynamic storm, but for now the brunt of the winter
impacts appear to stay well to our north/northeast.

Dry conditions should return Saturday as the storm slowly pulls
away, with a slow warmup expected Sunday and Monday. Then, another
short wave may kick across the state by Tuesday with a few snow
showers in the mountains and a return of strong, gusty winds.

VFR conditions today and tonight.  Drainage winds will continue thru
mid morning and then become light southwest by 15z.  Winds by midday
look to be light and variable followed by a gradualy shift to the
west northwest after 21z. By 02z winds will shift back to the
southwest and then to the south southwest by 06z.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 330 AM MDT Tue Apr 10 2018

Fire danger will increase across all of the Front Range Foothills,
Park County, and Plains on Wednesday due to warmer temperatures,
very low humidities, and gusty winds. Peak gusts should reach
25-35 mph across the plains, and up to 45 mph in the foothills. RH
will drop to 9-15%, and fuels have not greened up sufficiently
so we've issued a Red Flag Warning from 11 AM through 7 PM
Wednesday.

On Thursday, fire danger may elevate further with stronger winds.
Right now, it appears extreme conditions may develop from Park
county and the Southern Foothills across the Palmer Divide area.
We're uncertain as to how far north the critical or extreme
conditions would spread, but there's enough confidence to issue a
Red Flag Warning for Thursday as far north as the Denver metro
area to Akron. Later shifts can adjust further as necessary.
Thursday's event may also end later than normal as a frontal wind
shift arrives in the evening.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow showers will continue decrease over the mountains today.
Additional snowfall is expected to be less than 2 inches. Isolated
rain and snow showers will continue through mid to late afternoon
across the lower elevation. No snow accumulations is expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

For Tuesday through Thursday well above normal temperatures are
expected along with increasing fire danger across the Plains
Wednesday and Thursday. Another storm will impact Colorado late
Thursday into Friday, with snow in the mountains, and very windy
conditions over the plains.
