Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 325 AM CDT Thu Apr 12 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 325 AM CDT Thu Apr 12 2018 Highlights include the issuance of a Winter Storm Warning southwest, and a Winter Weather Advisory portions of western and far south central North Dakota, all beginning this evening. For the near term early this morning, fog/stratus loop and surface observations show dense fog from Linton to McClusky, and from Edgeley to Steele. Will continue with the dense fog advisory through mid morning. A larger area of clouds is quickly approaching and filling in across southwest and our far south central counties. This may help to erode some of the dense fog as it did earlier at Bismarck and Hazen. Latest water vapor imagery indicative of a mid/upper level shortwave in southern Idaho ejecting northeast with time. This shortwave reaches southeastern Montana late this afternoon, morphing into a closed low tonight, then shifting southeast into southern South Dakota by 12z Friday. In doing so, synoptic scale ascent peaks tonight into through Friday morning for most of western and south central North Dakota. Snow will taper off and end from north to south Friday afternoon. Total snowfall of between 6 and 8 inches within the winter storm warning area of southwest North Dakota; and between 3 and 6 inches within the winter weather advisory for portions of western and far south central North Dakota. Outside of the winter weather advisory area, expect 1 to 3 inches which would include the rest of south central and the southern James River Valley. No snowfall expected for locations along and north of Highway 2. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 325 AM CDT Thu Apr 12 2018 Snow will taper off after 18z as the whole area shifts quickly to the south and will end by 00z Saturday. Upper level ridging approaches and slides through western/central North Dakota Sunday night and Monday. Expect dry weather Saturday through Monday; however a weak shortwave is forecast ahead of the approaching ridge Saturday, yielding slight chances for rain or snow in the far northwest. Next shortwave trough pushes through Tuesday/Tuesday night. Will need to monitor for thunderstorm potential with this given the GFS has weak CAPE all around our CWA.
