Issued at 115 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018

Just a quick update to remove a few counties from the current
advisory, including Burleigh and Morton counties.

UPDATE Issued at 1227 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018

No significant changes for the early morning update other than
adjusting pops based on latest radar. Portions of the Advisory
over central ND were allowed to expire. Band of snow has lost some
of it's intensity as it has propagated into the James River
Valley. Steep lapse rates remain but it looks like the band is
encountering some drier air aloft and is losing some definition.
Could be a clap of thunder but will remove thunder wording for the
rest of the night. Will likely be able to cancel a few more
counties early, especially some of the western most counties.

UPDATE Issued at 1007 PM CDT Thu Mar 29 2018

Little change with this update. A potent, but quick moving, heavy
band of snow will continue to propagate southeast this evening.
Thunder snow has been observed with strong forcing and steep mid
level lapse rates. A quick one to three inches of snow is expected
with visibility quickly falling below one-half mile. An expansion
of the Winter Weather Advisory is possible into Stark, Grant and
Sioux counties.

Will continue the SPS to summarize impacts tonight through Easter
weekend.

UPDATE Issued at 806 PM CDT Thu Mar 29 2018

Issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the band of heavy snow as
described in the previous update. A quick one to three inches of
snow is expected with significantly reduced visibility.

UPDATE Issued at 644 PM CDT Thu Mar 29 2018

A band of moderate to heavy snow from Ray and Tioga through Minot
as of 2345 UTC continues in association with strong low level
frontogenesis and steep mid level lapse rates. A quick one to
three inches of wet snow is possible. This zone of frontogenesis
and steep mid level lapse rates will propagate south to the I-94
corridor by 02-04 UTC. Will issue an SPS for now across the US
Highway 2 corridor, however, an expansion of the Winter Weather
Advisory may be needed this evening. Will closely monitor trends.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)

Issued at 330 PM CDT Thu Mar 29 2018

Forecast highlights in the short term period will be impactful
winter weather through the period for most locations.

Currently, long wave trough over much of North America with
northwest flow over the Dakotas. Embedded impulses within the
flow, which one of these waves earlier this morning brought 3-4
inches of snow to southwest North Dakota as a heavy snow band
developed thanks to favorable lapse rates and forcing.
Unseasonably cool temperatures southwest/south central in the
30s/low 40s where weak WAA is occurring, colder elsewhere. Some
radar returns north where light snow has been reported. A more
defined area of precipitation over far south central SK and parts
of northeast MT advecting east and southeast towards our region.

Another embedded wave responsible for the precipitation to our
northwest will push across the region over the next several hours.
Subtle surface low pressure will accompany this wave and move
east-southeast across western into southern North Dakota now
through this evening. Favorable 700-850MB frontogensis coupled
with steep lapse rates of 8-8.5C will be present, so we're
anticipating another banded snow event to unfold. Challenges have
been trying to define where this will occur, and whether or not
we will see some convective precipitation developing today west.
CAMs have been fairly consistent in the convective potential, and
we are seeing signs of this developing now over eastern Montana.
Snow will develop into western ND (especially northwest)
momentarily, then will push east/southeast this evening. Recent
high res models are putting the best potential for light to
moderate accumulating snow from Lake Sakakawea southeast into the
James Rive Valley, and perhaps even as far west as the southern
Missouri River Valley. Much depends on where the snow bands form
and what role any convective precipitation plays. We opted to
issue a winter weather advisory for Wells, Foster, Kidder, and
Stutsman counties where guidance is fairly confident in 3-4 inches
of snow. May need to expand headlines further west along the I94

For Friday, confidence continues to grow the most impactful
weather will be over the northern two thirds of western and
central North Dakota, from Williston to Garrison and LaMoure and
all points north.

A stronger impulse within the mean northwest flow will bring
another round of snow to the state Friday and Friday night.
Stronger synoptic and FG forcing is indicated with this wave and
also within an area of steeper lapse rates. A blend of model
guidance is giving bands of moderate snow extending from Crosby
and Williston southeast to Minot and Garrison and Rugby, Harvey,
Carrington and Jamestown. Generally 4 to 6 inches of snow are
depicted withing this area. However, due to the strong FG forcing
beneath an area of strong synoptic scale ascent, we anticipate
mesoscale banded precipitation within this area producing higher
snow totals that get washed out utilizing a blend of model
guidance. Will maintain the winter storm watch as is with winter
headlines in effect for tonight and still some uncertainty where
the heavier snow bands will develop. We still expect that a
portion, and potentially a large portion may end up with advisory
conditions, but we also think there is enough potential for some
significantly higher amounts within this area that may warrant a
warning. In addition we will also see areas of blowing and
drifting snow Friday afternoon and Friday night as strong wind
develop. Blizzard conditions not out of the question southeast for
Friday. Dangerous wind chills to around 25 below zero also still
expected later Friday night.

Widespread LIFR/VLIFR conditions developing again in heavy snow
across most of northwest North Dakota after 12z, spreading south and
east to KMOT, KBIS, KJMS. Snow continuing into Friday night,

Ashley, Lamoure and Oakes. Visibility will quickly drop below a
mile. A quick inch or two of snow is expected. Do not use cruise
