Area forecast discussion, Mar 3, 11:14 AM MST, 3 hours 53 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 1214 PM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 .UPDATE... Issued at 1206 PM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 Quick update to allow the dense fog advisory in the far southwest to expire. Visibilities continue to improve over that area. Otherwise made minor changes in temps for the afternoon. UPDATE Issued at 1037 AM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 Have added small chances of light snow or light freezing drizzle today for parts of northwest and north central areas. Latest run of high res and global models depict isolated/scattered precip...and latest radar loops are showing some light radar returns. Otherwise kept the mention of the dense fog advisory in the far southwest - some areas still low visibility while other areas improving. Will likely allow that to expire at 11 am mst/noon cst. Otherwise minor changes in hourly temps and winds. UPDATE Issued at 733 AM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 Issued a Dense Fog Advisory through 18Z today for far southwest North Dakota. NDDOT webcams as of 620 AM MST show significantly reduced visibility in the Amidon, Bowman, Beach and Trotters areas. Some freezing drizzle is also possible with the fog. Given continued light easterly upslope winds through the day, the fog may continue into the afternoon, and an extension of the Advisory is possible. UPDATE Issued at 634 AM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 Areas of fog continue to linger over portions of western North Dakota. Otherwise, quiet weather continues. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 419 AM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 Current surface analysis places low over the central Rockies with high over the western Great Lakes. Upper level analysis places ridge over the plains with low just off the northern Pacific coast. Secondary low is spinning up over the Canadian Rockies. Over our area, some fog continues to linger over southwestern portions of the area while an easterly breeze remains in place north-northeast of the surface low. For today, fog will gradually diminish in the morning with a generally quiet day expected. For tonight, low level moisture continues to pull into the area with some drizzle or light freezing drizzle developing over eastern portions of the area. Some fog will also develop late. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 419 AM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 Main highlight for the long term continues to be the impending winter storm that will strike the northern plains early in the week. Surface low over Colorado will deepen early Sunday before ejecting out over the central plains and lifting towards the northern plains overnight, while the upper low slides over the Rockies and deepens overnight over the plains. Moist air will continue to pull in over the top of the low Sunday morning, spreading areas of drizzle and freezing drizzle over the area. Broad lift from the approaching upper low then pushes easterly by mid-morning into mid-day with snow spreading into the west, and rain developing over central parts of the state where warmer air pulled into the system remains. Into the evening and overnight a gradual snow/rain transition will occur from west to east as the atmosphere cools. There is still some question on the timing of the transition as some models want to hang on to the warmer air a bit longer than others. Either way, by Monday morning most locations should have switched over to snow, with the only exception possibly being parts of the James River Valley. On Monday, low stacks up over eastern South Dakota and very slowly settles east-southeast overnight. Expect snow to continue through much of the day, with areas of blowing snow. Overnight, periods of snow are expected to continue, but not as heavy as during the day. Low then quickly ejects off to the east on Tuesday with snow coming to an end through the day. Have expanded winter storm watch to cover all of western and central North Dakota including the James River Valley, with heavy snow expected across the area on Monday. There is still some question to exact amounts that will fall, especially over eastern portions of the area where questions remain on the timing of the rain/snow transition. Mainly quiet weather then expected over the area in the wake of the departing storm through the remainder of the work week. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon) Issued at 1206 PM CST Sat Mar 3 2018 For western North Dakota, including KDIK/KISN, IFR/LIFR stratus will continue this afternoon. Stratus is expected to lower this evening and tonight to LIFR/VLIFR. Fog across southwest North Dakota late this morning will expand this evening and tonight, and continue into Sunday morning. LIFR/VLIFR visibility is expected in fog and freezing drizzle. For central North Dakota, including KBIS/KMOT/KJMS, MVFR stratus will develop through the afternoon. Ceilings will lower to IFR/LIFR this evening and tonight. Fog will also develop tonight into Sunday morning with LIFR/VLIFR visibility possible in fog and freezing drizzle. A significant winter storm will begin to impact the region Sunday afternoon, and continue into Tuesday. && .BIS WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
