The rest of the forecast remains on track. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 406 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 A weak mid-level wave will continue to bring scattered light snow showers across mainly central and eastern North Dakota through the morning. The wave slides off to the east this afternoon with brief upper-level ridging building in. Canadian high pressure will move into the northern Red River Valley this evening. The influence of this high will keep temperatures near to below normal, with afternoon highs from around 10 northeast to 25 southwest. Subzero lows are possible tonight across north central North Dakota. Snow will begin to move into southwest North Dakota late tonight. See the long term discussion for more details. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 406 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 A long-duration hazardous winter weather event is expected Tuesday night through Thursday night. Several inches of snow accumulation is likely across all but far northwest parts of the forecast area. Near-blizzard conditions are possible Thursday and Thursday night from south central North Dakota into the James River Valley. An upper-level low that is currently near the San Francisco Bay area will dig into the Desert Southwest by Wednesday, with a northern stream trough moving east across Montana. Strong isentropic ascent ahead of the northern trough will produce widespread snow across the region beginning late Tuesday night. Strong forcing within the DGZ and near zero to negative EPV values could enhance snowfall rates. Model consensus QPF calls for a large swath of 0.25"-0.45", with snow ratios around 12:1 to 18:1. Widespread snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are expected late Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Meanwhile, lee cyclogenesis ahead of the southwest upper low will occur on Wednesday. Models have come into better agreement on the track of this low. It is starting to appear more likely that the southern James River Valley will receive a second round of moderate, possibly heavy snow on Thursday. Additional accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are possible in these areas. The bigger threat on Thursday, however, will be increasing northerly winds on the back side of the surface low. Soundings show a mix down potential of 35-45 kts Thursday afternoon and evening from south central into eastern North Dakota. Regardless of how much additional snow falls on Thursday, there will be fresh snow on the ground from Wednesday that should easily be blown around. Areas of blowing snow appear likely during this timeframe, and near-blizzard conditions cannot be ruled out. We have issued a Winter Storm Watch from far south central North Dakota extending north and east to the James River Valley. This is where the greatest impacts will be felt from the combination of falling and blowing snow. The rest of western and central North Dakota, excluding the far northwest, is under a Winter Weather Advisory for 3 to 6 inches of snow late Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Parts of the advisory may need to be extended in time for blowing snow, but confidence in blowing snow outside of the watch is low at this time. Canadian high pressure will slide into the region Friday, causing well below normal temperatures. Wind chills may approach advisory criteria north and east. Models then suggest an upper-level ridge and moderating temperatures heading towards New Year's Day. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon) Issued at 1117 AM CST Tue Dec 25 2018 KJMS will have mostly vfr cigs with intermittent vfr/mvfr conditions through 21z today.
