What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Bismarck, ND wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Jan 10, 11:33 AM CST, 3 hours 10 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 10, 11:33 AM CST, 3 hours 10 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Bismarck ND
1133 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1132 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

High-res models have continued the upward trend in snow potential
so have increased snow amounts by about an inch mainly from
southwest portions of the state into central portions of the
state. Also, in eastern Montana some locations have dropped to 1/4
mile in visibility. Expect that as the storm evolves, we will also
have the occasional dip down in visibility so will mention the
possibility of occasional near blizzard conditions in our
products. At this time we do not expect this to be widespread, but
will continue to keep a close eye on observations in case an
upgrade would be to be considered.

UPDATE Issued at 903 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

Forecast remains in rather good shape. Only change was to add a
little freezing rain possibility over the southwest over the next
couple of hours as Baker had reported a bit earlier. Also, have
adjusted winds up a tad in line with wind reports coming in over
the northern portions of the area. Updates have been sent.

UPDATE Issued at 641 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

Little overall change with this forecast update. However, based on
the trend in the RAP/HRRR through their 11 UTC iterations, and
the 00 UTC HREF, increased snowfall to widespread 4 to 6 inches
across southwest North Dakota through Lake Sakakawea. This change
is generally an inch or two more for these locations from the
previous forecast, but, still in line with WPC expectations and
the overall incoming 06 UTC global models.

UPDATE Issued at 312 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

Visibilities within the dense fog advisory across portions of
south central ND and into the northern James River Valley have
risen above dense fog criteria. Thus, have cancelled the Dense Fog
Advisory. Updates to all text products coming out shortly.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 213 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

For the near term (now through 12z/6 AM CST Wednesday), dense fog
continues over portions of south central ND into the northern
James River Valley. Will continue to watch and adjust accordingly
if conditions begin to improve sooner than expected.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow creating
hazardous travel conditions, followed by dangerous wind chills
tonight, are the short term highlights.

Latest water vapor imagery shows our incoming shortwave trough now
located in western Idaho. Arctic front associated with this per
surface observations and pressure changes indicate the front is
located from Estevan, Saskatchewan to Crosby, and is fast
approaching Williston to Miles City, Montana. Ahead of the front,
dense fog continues to meander around central ND, but where it has
been showing a consistent pattern of one quarter mile or less
visibilities, i.e., from Mandan/Bismarck into Jamestown, a dense
fog advisory is in effect until 12z/6 AM CST Wednesday.

Regional radar shows increasing coverage of reflectivity's in
eastern Montana. Snow will begin in the west prior to 12z, and
work into central ND between 15z-18z/9AM-Noon CST. RAP BUFKIT
soundings indicate a 2hr to 3hr window of mixed precipitation
late this morning for the James River Valley. A switch to all snow
will occur abruptly during the early afternoon.

Per NAM/GFS, it still appears that frontogenetical forcing
slightly outpaces the strongest synoptic scale ascent, with meager
mid level lapse rates in between. So while the threat for heavy
banded snow is minimal, ascent within the dendritic growth zone
this afternoon is sufficient both in strength and duration for
light to moderate snow. With the falling snow in combination with
gusty northwest winds 20 to 30 mph, expect hazardous travel
conditions through the evening in snow and blowing snow. Expect
total snowfall accumulations through tonight of 3 to 5 inches
near/along and south of Highway 2. North of Highway 2 expect total
snowfall accumulations of between 1 and 3 inches.

And after collaborating with neighboring offices, we have opted
to convert the winter storm watch in the James River Valley into a
Winter Weather Advisory. Winds were a bit too weak for blizzard
conditions. Bottom line is a Winter Weather Advisory for all of
western and central ND for snow and blowing snow through tonight.

Temperatures will be falling sharply through the day, with
dangerous windchills between 25 and 35 below zero tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 213 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

Frigid air, dangerous wind chills, and another round of light
accumulating snow Thursday night through Friday, and again Sunday
are the highlights in the long term period.

Expect dangerous wind chills between 25 and 35 below zero each night
and morning through the extended. However, the coldest wind chills
show up Saturday morning where wind chills are as low as 45 below
zero. Expect wind chill headlines across western/central ND through
the long term period.

On Friday, another shortwave and surge of arctic air will sweep
through. Not much wind with this system, as winds will be at or
below 10kt, but snow ratios due to the very cold air through the
atmospheric column, snow ratios are forecast around 25 to 1. With
less moisture/liquid with this event, still expect between 1 and
2 inches of fluffy accumulations across western/central ND.

Strong northerly flow dominates through the weekend with a 1048mb
surface high passing through Friday night/Saturday. As the high
departs, a brief return to warm air advection, and with an
approaching shortwave/surface low Saturday night, another round
of light snow is expected Saturday night/Sunday.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)
Issued at 1126 AM CST Wed Jan 10 2018

Snow and blowing snow will continue to overspread North Dakota. Expect
visibility below 1 mile in snow and blowing snow. Ceilings will
deteriorate to MVFR/IFR with the snow. The snow will taper off
from west to east tonight, but IFR/MVFR ceilings and visibility
will likely continue through at least 06z for all terminals, and
through 12z at KJMS.
