Temperatures have plummeted across most of western and central
North Dakota with clear skies and fresh snow cover, with readings
as of 06 UTC of 20 to 25 below for most areas. Widespread lows of
25 to 30 below are expected outside of the southwest where skies
will remain clear. Certainly could not rule out some lows in the
-30s for a few spots this morning.

Across the southwest with cloud cover and occasional light snow,
lows will be warmer in the -8 to-15 range.

An upgrade to a Wind Chill Warning may be needed across portions
of the area tonight. Given the temperature trend tonight, lowered
highs for Friday, and decreased lows for Friday night into
Saturday morning to be as cold if not colder than expectations
for this morning.

UPDATE Issued at 941 PM CST Thu Jan 11 2018

Surface high pressure is situated along Lake Sakakawea and east
into the northern James River Valley. Temperatures already
dropping into the 20 to 25 below range in some areas along and
north of the lake. In the far southwest temperatures have begun to
rise with increasing clouds. Made some minor adjustments to
with coldest temperatures in central and northern ND.

Light snow remains just to the south and west of the state over
southeast MT into northwest SD. Precipitation is expected to move
into the southwest around midnight. Latest iterations of short
term models and latest run of global models suppress pops farther
south than previous runs. Used a blend of models to trend this way
with lighter amounts (under an inch) as well.

No changes to current Wind Chill Advisory. Updated text products
will be sent out shortly.

UPDATE Issued at 633 PM CST Thu Jan 11 2018

Arctic high pressure is situated from southern Saskatchewan south
into western and central ND this evening with mostly clear skies
across the forecast area. There is some dissipating cloud cover
over the southern James River Valley, and an area of increasing
clouds over the southwest associated with the next wave bringing
some light snow to the southwest late tonight into Friday morning.

Latest observations have been keeping up with or exceeding the
downward temperature trend this evening. Winds around 5 to 10 mph
could hamper overall temperature drop, and clouds in the
southwest will have an affect. But in general bumped forecast low
temperatures down a few degrees most areas. Overall good
radiational cooling setup, and a fresh new snowcover will help.
Wind chills 25 to 40 below through the night. Will continue the
Wind Chill Advisory.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 303 PM CST Thu Jan 11 2018

Current surface analysis places low over the Great Lakes while
high starts to settle over the northern plains. Upper level
analysis places trough stretching from near the Red River Valley
southward through the southern plains. Breezy winds continue ahead
of the approaching high over the James River Valley resulting in a
little blowing snow, but these winds should be diminishing by
later this afternoon/early evening.

For tonight...a weak wave over British Columbia/Alberta dives down
towards the region late tonight, which will bring a chance of
light snow to southwestern areas after midnight. Otherwise,
surface high pressure settling over the area will result in a very
cold night with frigid wind chills.

On Friday, some light snow may linger over southwestern and
portions of south central North Dakota as the aforementioned wave
continues its advance. A very cold day is on tap as high
temperatures remain below zero while surface high remains over the
area. Overnight lows below 20 below zero will be common Friday
night with dangerous wind chill values.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

The next little wave zips through the area on Saturday/Saturday
evening bringing the next low chance for precipitation.
Temperatures will be a bit milder, but still well below average.
Another clipper slides in Sunday bringing light snow chances with
a very cold airmass following. Frigid wind chills remain Sunday
night through Monday night. Models are hinting at a warming trend
finally arriving over the area towards mid-week.

VFR conditions expected through the forecast period at all sites
except KDIK. Light snow will spread into southwest ND aft 06z and
reach KDIK area around 12z with occasional MVFR cigs in light snow
through around 16z, becoming VFR before 18z.
