. Strong runoff along the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers in Montana will
the Missouri River near Williston to rise above flood stage late Thursday.
The Missouri River is expected to remain above minor flood stage for at
least a week and then remain near minor flood stage through the latter part
of May.

it will approach 23.25 ft sometime on Wednesday. This is not likely to
be the last surge in water levels as unseasonably warmer temperatures
in Montana have accelerated snow melt in the upper Yellowstone. High
water along the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers west of Williston
should be expected through May.

. Current weather and hydrologic forecasts continue to point to falling
water levels for the Missouri River near Williston. However, due to the
relatively high water in Lake Sakakawea, the fall below flood stage will
continue to be slow. The Missouri River near Williston should fall below
flood stage near the first of August.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 208 PM CDT Wed May 9 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 207 PM CDT Wed May 9 2018 Scattered showers/isold thunderstorms southeast today and good chances for showers west late tonight into Thursday highlight the short term period. Currently, northwest flow aloft with an embedded S/WV impulse and associated sfc reflection moving southeast through the eastern Dakotas. Enough instability near the wave for scattered showers over my southeastern counties, between the southern Missouri River Valley and the James River Valley. Have not yet seen any cloud flashes or lightning strikes, though will maintain thunder mention with the present MUCAPE near 1000 J/KG. Increased winds earlier and this has verified as we yet again have mixed more than expected, resulting in higher wind magnitudes than models portrayed. Should be noted that BUFKIT analysis can often times do a much better job on seeing the mixing potential. Embedded wave quickly exits off to our southeast late this afternoon with decreasing instability and forcing so will keep a dry evening forecast. Winds will quickly tape off as well early to mid evening once the atmosphere decouples. Upper level jet streak and associated mid level PVA will undercut ridging to our west tonight, then will continue east into the Northern Plains on Thursday. Surface trough/frontal boundary remains stretched across central MT back southeast into western SD, with a surface ridge extending south across the eastern Dakotas. The ridge will act to keep showers mainly confined to western North Dakota late tonight into Thursday, with more elevated activity over central ND tomorrow where the boundary layer remains dry. Colder air associated with the surface ridge central and expected cloud cover and precipitation west will both result in unseasonably cool daytime highs on Thursday from the mid 40s to mid 50s. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 207 PM CDT Wed May 9 2018 The long term is highlighted by below average temperatures through Saturday morning, followed by a moderation in temperatures this weekend into next week to near/slightly above normal readings. Precipitation chances through the period will be hit and miss/scattered in nature, though perhaps some decent chances south on Friday and maybe more widespread early next week. Cool high pressure remains partially over the area on Friday maintaining cooler temperatures. Best chances for showers will be across the south for the end of the week south of the high pressure and near the path of embedded impulses being ejected by a closed upper low over the Intermountain West. Mainly dry conditions this weekend with high pressure building over much of the north central CONUS. Upper low remains over the western United States though it may be possible for some stray showers to migrate near our local area. Chance of precipitation returns early to mid next week as the upper low starts to lift northeast.
