Morning...

.Heavy snow will develop across northern Clark and Taylor
Counties late tonight, exiting east later Saturday morning. The 
heaviest snow will be north of Highway 29 in Wisconsin. Snow 
accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected across Clark County 
with 6 to 9 inches across Taylor County. Roads will quickly become
snow covered and slippery to hazardous tonight. Snowfall rates of
1 inch per hour are possible.

.A period of moderate to heavy snow is expected across north 
central Wisconsin this morning. Snowfall rates up to 1 to 2 
inches per hour will occur leading to significant visibility 
reductions and snow-covered and slippery roads. Snowfall totals up
to 7 to 10 inches are expected, highest across far northern Clark
County and Taylor County, with lower amounts over southern Clark 
County.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 338 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018

Surface high pressure this morning will get shunted south after
30.18Z as a quick moving short-wave currently across north central
ND races across the Upper Midwest. This wave will bring a quick shot
of precipitation across Taylor/Clark Counties. Temperatures should
be warm enough for mainly rain, but cannot rule out a rain/snow mix
at times. Little to no snow accumulation is expected. Otherwise,
clouds will be on the increase throughout the day with afternoon
highs from the mid 30s to mid 40s, although some parts of southwest
WI could reach 50 degrees. Today will also be breezy with roughly
20 to 25 kts at the top of the mixed boundary layer. This will
result in southwest breezes with occasional gusts up to 25 mph.

Attention then turns to tonight as a secondary, stronger short-
wave takes the same path across the region as its predecessor
earlier in the day. A compact surface low will move from near
Aberdeen to the Twin cities to Wausau. Strong positive potential
vorticity advection in the 500 to 300 hPa layer, combined with
ample moisture and surface forcing from an advancing cold front
will result in a quick burst of wintry precipitation. Thermal
profiles support snow north of I-94 with rain to the south. There
will be a tight gradient in snow amounts with around an inch
along the I-94 corridor and up to 6 inches across far northern
Taylor County. Will issue a Winter Weather Advisory for Taylor and
Clark Counties from 1 AM tonight until 1 PM Saturday where 3-6
inches of snow is expected. While some snow will linger into
Saturday morning, the majority of it will fall overnight. Roads
will quickly become snow covered and slick tonight through
Saturday morning. If traveling, allow extra time to reach your
destination.

Winds will also increase significantly tonight into Saturday with
this system. Expect winds from 30 to 50 kts just above the
nocturnal inversion tonight. The inversion should keep the
strongest winds from reaching the surface, but there will be a
rapid increase after sunrise Saturday morning as the boundary
layer deepens. With 40 kts in the near surface layer, frequent
gusts up to 45 mph are a real possibility. A Wind Advisory may be
needed for portions of the forecast area, but with the greatest
impacts not until after 12Z Saturday, will allow later shifts to
re-evaluate and issue if necessary. Winds will then gradually
diminish Saturday afternoon and evening.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Thursday)

Sunday will be sunny with westerly breezes, but chilly for the 1st
of April with highs only in the 30s. Much of north central WI may
not even break 30 degrees, especially with fresh snow cover.

The rest of the week will see a continuation of fast zonal-
northwest flow given a large persistent Hudson Bay low. Another
stronger short-wave will result in rain or snow chances again
Monday into Tuesday. Precipitation type will be dependent on
thermal profiles, of which there is still some uncertainty, but
some accumulating snow is again possible for portions of the
area. Wednesday looks dry, but Thursday could see a return of
light precipitation.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)
Issued at 1241 PM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018

Main aviation concerns are on LLWS tonight and increasing
northwest winds Saturday, then onto MVFR ceilings behind a cold
front. Cumulus clouds will dissipate late this afternoon with VFR
conditions through the evening hours. South/southwest winds will
increase to around 55 kts at 2 kft by 9Z and looks to continue
through around 12Z creating low level wind shear concerns. Look
for rain or a light wintry mix to move across the TAF sites
tonight mainly in the 7 to 11 Z timeframe. Then winds will
increase out of the west to northwest at 18 to 22 kts with gusts
to around 33 kts. Also, plan on MVFR ceilings moving into the TAF
sites after 12Z.
