.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

Water vapor satellite this afternoon shows long wave troughing
over the Rockies with a large ridge in place over the East Coast
north of Michael. The central part of the country was caught in
the middle between these two large features which was allowing
several pieces of energy coming out of the western trough to move
across the region and kick off showers and a few storms.
Regional radars starting to show a break in some of the rain over
western Iowa as the short wave trough that moved across last night
and this morning continues to pull away from the region. This
should allow for a relative lull in the rain to develop across
much of the area later this afternoon. However, this should be
rather short-lived as the activity over Kansas and Nebraska
advances northeast with the next short wave trough. All the short
term meso-scale models all spread this back over the area this
evening with it then continuing for much of the overnight. A break
in this activity should then start to develop late tonight into
Tuesday morning as the area once again will be in between short
wave troughs.
The activity should once again increase in coverage later Tuesday
afternoon and evening into Wednesday as the main short wave
trough is expected to swing across the Upper Midwest. This short
wave trough will bring the strongest forcing to the area with
moderate to strong pv advection in the 500-300 mb layer expected
Wednesday. The low level moisture transport into the region will
be the strongest Tuesday night ahead of the wave which is when the
most widespread rain is expected. High precipitable water is
already in place across the region and this will remain in the
1.75 to 2 inch range until the main short wave trough pushes
across the area. This will create the potential for each round of
rain to produce some widespread half to one inch amounts which
could lead to storm totals in the 2 to 4 inch range. More on the
heavy rain and flooding potential in the hydro section below.
There will be a small threat for some thunder tonight across the
entire area as the incoming short wave trough could pull up some
elevated instability with up to 500 J/Kg of MU CAPE. There could
be a bit more thunder Tuesday afternoon and evening with the
08.12Z NAM suggesting around 1000 J/Kg of MU CAPE ahead of the
main surface low over northeast Iowa into western Wisconsin. With
30 to 40 knots of 0-3 km shear in place, there could be the
potential for some strong to severe storms in this period with
damaging winds looking to be the main threat. As the low level jet
increase ahead of the surface low, the 0-1 km shear will increase
to around 25 knots. This, along with the presence of any low
level boundaries, will have to monitored for a potential tornado.
This threat does still look to be rather conditional based on how
much CAPE there will be with abundant cloud cover and minimal
warming during the day.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday)

Things dry out and cool fairly significantly behind the front as
flow aloft becomes more zonal or even northwesterly across
Minnesota. Looking like a fairly good signal for 850 mb temperatures
below 0 C, with high temperatures only in the 40s for Thursday and
Friday and lows in the upper 20s to 30s. Good model agreement of
some shortwave energy sliding through on Friday (though some minor
timing differences), but looking like surface high pressure wins out
and likely keeps the area dry. Models remain in good agreement with
bringing another shortwave through Saturday night into Sunday. With
the high pressure off to the east by then and another shot of cold
air aloft moving in, thinking there are chances for actually seeing
some precipitation. However, the 08.12Z GFS and 08.00Z ECMWF have
trouble saturating at the surface and produce little if any QPF over
the forecast area, instead favoring areas closer to surface lows to
the north and south. That said, should the surface layer be able to
saturate, could see some of the first snowflakes of the season given
the cold air in place, especially at night. Model solutions then
diverge for the very end of the period, with the ECMWF switching
back to zonal flow, while the GFS keeps the cooler northwesterly
flow over the area.

A very challenging and admittedly low confidence forecast the next
24 hours with regard to ceilings across the area. A warm front is
literally draped right across the LSE area right now and will flex
back and forth through Tuesday evening as waves of low pressure
ripple along the front. Currently seeing widespread LIFR
conditions at both LSE and RST, though per current trends, there
are hints that LSE may break out to VFR levels for a few hours
into late evening (low confidence). A round of showers and storms
will advance across the entire area late this evening and early
overnight (mainly 03-08Z), departing and perhaps leaving another
break in rainfall late tonight into Tuesday morning. The position
of the front will be crucial to what ceilings do at LSE during
this later period, as any farther west trend will result in more
MVFR to even VFR ceilings there, while RST looks to be mainly
locked into IFR to LIFR conditions as they remain well west of the
front. Suffice it to say that amendments to the forecast are very
likely through Tuesday evening.

Not much change in the threat for heavy rain through Wednesday, with
models continuing to agree on warm cloud depths around 3.5 km,
precipitable water values in the 1.5 to 1.75 inch range, and various
surges of moisture transport as a boundary remains draped across the
area. Still thinking lack of instability could play a factor and
limit rainfall rates a bit, but given long duration of the rainfall,
flooding potential is still there (though less of a "flash" flood
threat). Several rivers are forecast to reach at least minor flood
stage, with some reaching moderate, but this will depend on where
exactly the heaviest rain falls. Currently favored areas look to be
from north-central Iowa, through southeast Minnesota, and into north-
central Wisconsin, where 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall, with
locally higher amounts possible. Based on where the heavier rains
fell Sunday night and with an additional couple of inches of
possible, will add the next two columns of counties to the east of
the current watch.
