...Lingering lake snows and very cold temps/wind chills...

High Impact Weather Potential...advisory-warning wind chill
readings tonight through Friday morning. Persistent accumulating
snow in the Grand Traverse Bay region.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Impressive plunge of cold air
underway with deep troughing stretching from eastern Canada down
through the east coast of the CONUS and negative 22C to negative
26C H8 air skirting the northern Great Lakes region. Afternoon
surface analysis reveals Canadian high pressure across Manitoba/
Ontario and stretching down through the plains...trying to edge
into the western Great Lakes but meeting resistance by lake
aggregate troughing that spans the U.P. into Lake Huron. Mean
low level flow is largely N/NNW with ongoing lake snow showers
still impacting the Grand Traverse Bay region down through
Manistee and...to a lesser extent...areas along the Huron coast
of Presque Isle/Alpena counties.

Very little to slow change in the pattern anticipated over the
next 24 to 36 hours...as large Canadian high pressure gradually
slides down into the Midwest...opposite deep low pressure running
up the east coast. N/NNW flow lake snows will persist with a bit
more clearer skies/sunshine across interior sections.

As far as snow accumulations go..."extreme" over lake instability
will persist of course with lake induced CAPEs running 800-1000
J/kg. Inversion heights are a little on the lower side to start but
should tick upward tonight as upstream short-wave over western
Ontario slips down through the western Great Lakes. That said...
snow accumulations will continue to be tempered by a very cold
atmosphere/unusable DGZ and lowered snow->water ratios.

Per spotter/CoCoRAHS snowfall reports...snow accumulations within
the most persistent snow bands still seem to be running in the
2-3 inches per 12-hour range. Snowfall rates may increase just a
bit tonight with passage of the wave/increased EQLs/beefier lake
convection. Overall...still anticipate sub-warning snow
accumulations around the Grand Traverse Bay area and parts of NE
lower Michigan through Friday...2-4 inches or so every 12-hours.
Bigger impact is the effect VSBY reductions with many areas
(TVC/PZQ/even APN) reporting VSBYs down to 1/2SM at times.
So...plan to continue the advisory through the day Friday with no
changes.

Very cold temperatures/low wind chills is the other high impact
concern. Low temperature forecast remains very tricky as clear/
partly cloudy skies...cold advection and good radiational cooling
conditions will be offset by lingering stronger boundary layer
flow. On the the other hand...stronger flow/wind will lead to
lower wind chills. So anyway you slice it anticipate "apparent
temperatures" to run -20F to -30F for a good part of the
CWA. Tighter gradient/stronger winds anticipated across eastern
upper and NE lower Michigan where I do have a fair amount of
warning criteria wind chills for later tonight through Friday
morning. So...plan is to issue another set of wind chill advisory
headlines (outside of the winter weather advisories already in
affect) and put eastern upper/NE lower Michigan into a warning.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday night through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Another round of snow Sunday.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Coldest air moves away from the region
with 850mb temperatures rising from around -25C Friday night to the
minus single digits by Sunday night. The warmup occurs on the back
side of the surface high, with a southwest flow/isentropic lift
developing Saturday night into Sunday. A surface low moving across
southern Canada will then drag a front across Michigan Sunday night.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Southwest flow Saturday night with
deltaTs nearing 20C means lake effect snow develops over the Lake
Michigan shoreline. Snow will be enhanced and become more
synoptic- like as isentropic lift/overrunning moves in shortly
thereafter and moisture increases rapidly toward Sunday morning.
Best synoptic lift will be well north and south of Michigan, but
between LES and pre- frontal lift should see QPF values of 0.05"
to 0.25" area-wide. This should translate to snowfall
accumulations of 2 to 5 inches of snow along the Lake Michigan
shoreline and into Eastern Upper MI, with lesser amounts east. The
southwest flow will also bring in "warmer" air for Sunday as high
temperatures should reach the 20s for the first time in a while.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

Big change in the latest thinking for mid-week. While the early
period clippers are still expected to move through the region, they
are now progged to arrive earlier. As a result, the expected
dampening of the height rises trying to build mid-week are less
likely to happen, which will bring a much warmer airmass into the
region than previously expected. This will also serve to diminish
the lake effect potential. With high pressure sliding through the
Ohio Valley, quiet weather and near normal temps could persist
through most of next week. A system moving out of the plains may
arrive late in the week, bringing the next chance for widespread
snow.

Lake snow showers will continue through Friday...most persistent
at TVC/MBL/APN where a mix of MVFR and IFR conditions will be
found. Lower snow->water ratios given the very cold airmass will
translate into lowered snow accumulations...but effect VSBY
reductions with smaller flake sizes.

PLN stays out of the clouds/snow showers through midday Friday
with northerly flow.
