.NEAR TERM...(Tonight through Thursday)

...Some light precip later tonight and Thursday...

High Impact Weather Potential...none.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Surface high pressure remains stretched
across the lower peninsula this afternoon. It took awhile...but
morning stratus has finally mixed out for the most part save for a
thin sliver in the SW counties and up in the eastern U.P.

Meanwhile...upper flow pattern remains somewhat split across the
central CONUS with strong short wave energy swinging into Texas
and a nice moisture feed ahead of the trough from Texas/Gulf up
through the Ohio Valley. Second weaker wave is moving through the
upper Midwest/Canadian border with an associated surface low over
western Ontario and trailing cold front stretching down into the
central plains. Thin corridor of light radar returns noted along
the front.

Tonight into Thursday...northern Michigan gets somewhat "sandwiched"
by moisture starved northern stream short wave/surface low and
cold front pressing through the region later tonight...and strong
southern stream wave/surface low that will slide up through the
Ohio Valley/far southern lower Michigan through the day Thursday.
We might get a little mixy light precip across eastern upper
Michigan late overnight...along the cold front and the tail end
of better moisture/forcing sliding into Ontario followed by a
little bit of light rain possible across the SE part of the CWA on
Thursday. But overall...low impact weather persists across the
region for at least another day or two.

.SHORT TERM...(Thursday night through Saturday)

...Accumulating snow...

High Impact Weather Potential...Moderate snow fall amounts for E
Upper and portions of N lower Michigan.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Upper level trough begins the cool down
that is expected through the weekend. The trough moves into the
region by Thursday night. However, the sfc high is still producing
dry air over the region, so will expect that the night will be dry.
Friday morning, a secondary trough and cold front move into the
Upper Great Lakes, but the moisture looks spotty. Models have
precipitation late in the afternoon, and probably in the form of
light snow. There is a break, as high pressure builds in for Friday
night just before the next wave. This next wave is much stronger. The
GFS idea is through N Lower during the afternoon, while the ECMWF
keeps it in W Upper and E Lake Superior. The GFS would produce more
snow than the ECMWF solution.

Primary Forecast Concerns...The GFS idea has moved a little closer
to the ECMWF solution, which cuts the low across the Upper
peninsula, and through E Lake Superior, and then into Ontario. The
GFS cuts it across N Lower along M-32, more or less, and would
produce moderate amounts of snow in E Upper. SREF plumes show that
the means are around 2 inches with most of the members clumped below
the mean. There are a few higher amounts that are skewing the mean
upward. So confidence is low on the the snow begin much more than a
few inches. The GEFS plumes are a little more with the members
clumping around the mean, it's not as skewed. So if this were the
only tool, then confidence would be medium on advisory amounts.
However, with the ECMWF idea, and the SREF on the lower end of
things, will expect that the confidence is low  at this point,
especially with the GFS deterministic solution having moved a bit
toward the ECMWF idea.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

...Active weather pattern upcoming...

High Impact Weather Potential... Possible lake effect snow
accumulations.

It appears as if there is high confidence of a more active weather
pattern over the Great Lakes region...although exact timing and
accumulations are too uncertain to forecast at this time. It's safe
to say that there will be a period of some northwesterly lake effect
snows during the first half of the period with 850mb temperatures
dropping to -16C Saturday night through at least Monday...possibly
longer...as this is where models began to differ greatly with either
continued chances of lake effect snow or a storm system approaching
from the midwest on Tuesday. Highs will be generally near 30 to
upper 30s, while lows will drop into the teens.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)

Cloud cover has been very stubborn to burn off today...with
IFR morning stratus bubbling into an MVFR STCU deck over the last
several hours. But...visible satellite imagery does show the
remaining cloud cover now mixing/thinning out...with VFR
conditions already at PLN and soon-to-be VFR weather at the
remaining terminal sites within the next few hours.

VFR weather anticipated for much of tonight. However...another
weak-ish front will swing down through the region late overnight
through Thursday morning and bring another round of MVFR cloud
cover into the region.

.MARINE...
Issued at 330 PM EDT Wed Mar 28 2018

Cold front will slip through the region Thursday morning followed
by a period of gustier northerly winds Thursday afternoon and
Thursday night. This will lead to small craft advisory conditions
for parts of the Great Lakes starting midday Thursday. Will hoist
SCA for portions of the Lake Michigan nearshore area. Gustier
winds will eventually impact Lake Huron later Thursday/Thursday
night and additional SCA's will probably needed there as well.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

A low pressure system is expected to swing through the Great Lakes
Saturday and Saturday night bringing accumulating snow to parts of
northern Michigan. Behind this system...much colder air will
overspread the region into next week. This will likely bring
some accumulating lake effect snow to the snowbelts.
