.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High impact weather potential: Minimal. A bit of snow in spots, very
small chance for a touch of freezing precipitation.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Early this morning, mid level ridging was seen over the western and
eastern CONUS, while troughing extended from Hudson Bay and the way
down into the Gulf of Mexico. The troughing was resulting in three
different areas of low pressure. One north of James Bay with it's
associated cold front extending through Ontario, another was just
north of Lake Superior, with it's cold front extending southward
through the Mississippi valley. The third low pressure was
developing and strengthening in srn Louisiana. There are some patchy
areas of light rain with the Lake Superior low and along it's cold
front, but deeper moisture and additional light rain, associated
with stronger vorticity, was working northward from IL/IN.

The Lake Superior low and cold front will slowly track eastward and
into nrn Michigan by this evening, while the deeper moisture from
IL/IN continue to advect northward and into nrn Michigan today.
Aided by some weak upper divergence from jet energy helping deepen
the Louisiana system, and weak WAA/DPVA, light rains are expected to
expand/further develop into nrn Michigan today. Fcst soundings show
some of the deeper moisture stripping out aloft from south to north
later today, which may result in potential periods of drizzle that
continues into this evening.

The Gulf system deepens significantly, while lifting NE into the
lower Appalachians. NE lower may get in on a return of deeper
moisture aided from the Gulf system, resulting in possible more bona
fide rainfall. There are trends for these rains to be a little more
east however. Either way, there would at least be a continued
possibility for drizzle. To complicate matters further, there are
discontinuities concerning how deep the moisture is across NW lower
and eastern upper, and whether the precipitation is rain or drizzle.
Throw in some cold air advection behind the aforementioned cold
front from the Superior low, as well as from the Ontario front which
drops into nrn Michigan, and you get the potential for snow mixing
in for all areas but NE lower. Heck there are even some possible
signals for a bit of freezing rain/drizzle. What we have is a
forecast that is lacking at least some confidence.

Snowfall will be limited by precip intensity and relatively "warm"
temperatures. Maybe a few tenths in interior eastern upper and maybe
is portions of the higher terrain of interior nrn lower. The
freezing precipitation ought to be negligible. Thus, impacts are
seemingly minimal at best.

Highs today will be in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Lows will be in
the upper 20s to lower 30s.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Wintry travel Friday, with some
freezing drizzle possible Saturday evening.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: Timing of precipitation
changing to snow Thursday night along with snowfall amounts Friday.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...An organized system lifts out of the
Gulf states toward the eastern Great Lakes Friday and Friday
night. At upper levels, a narrow 500mb trough will slowly push
across the state Friday before exiting east of the Great Lakes by
the weekend. 850/700mb qvectors show strong forcing affecting the
forecast area Friday morning as the upper trough passes overhead,
before convergence diminishes Friday afternoon and evening as an
upper ridge moves into the wrn Lakes. Model soundings show good
moisture from the sfc to 500mb through Friday night before drying
significantly in mid and upper levels Saturday, as a surface and
upper ridge briefly settle into the state.

Colder air begins to filter into the state early Friday on the
backside of the exiting clipper, as model soundings show a
vertical temperature with freezing levels dropping to under 500ft
by 15z Friday, therefore will trend pcpn type to all snow Friday
and Friday night. Snow will become mainly lake driven Friday
afternoon and evening as sfc-850mb winds trend northwest while
model soundings show 850mb temps dropping to around -9c. However,
lake snow intensity will be hindered greatly due to limited low
lvl inversion heights around 3kt. There is also a concern about
some freezing drizzle possible Saturday afternoon and evening, as
model soundings show low lvl mstr lingering, while extremely dry
mid and upper lvl exsist above the inversion.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

An active pattern across the Great Lakes through the extended period
as upper trough and clipper move across the region. There will be
several chances for snow through the beginning of the upcoming work
week, as a 500mb trough settles into the Great Lakes (before exiting
east by mid-week) while a weakly organized clipper passes over the
state Sunday and Monday. Lake snows are expected over the western
Lakes and eastern Upper Michigan through Tuesday as 850mb temps drop
to around -14c and 850/500mb winds trend west to northwest.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night)
Issued at 1234 AM EST Thu Dec 20 2018

Weak low pressure and a cold front will enter nrn Michigan today,
resulting in some light rain, then potential periods of drizzle into
at least Thursday evening while CIGS lower to MVFR then IFR. There
may be some slightly reduced VSBYS with the rain, but more so into
tonight due to the expectation of fog development. The reduced VSBYS
and MVFR/IFR CIGS continue late Thursday night, and deeper moisture
returns with more rain, which may start to mix with snow toward
daybreak Friday for the NW airports.

Southerly winds will largely be under 10kts into this evening before
weakening and going more light and variable. By late Thursday night,
winds turn more northerly.

S/SW winds will continue to weaken today and into this evening, as
weak low pressure and a cold front approach nrn Michigan, which will
also bring a little light rain. Winds go more light and variable for
a bit, before gradually turning more northerly and increasing for
the remainder of the night, as stronger low pressure works up the
eastern CONUS. This system will also bring better rain to primarily
Lake Huron through Friday, while the northerly winds may approach
gales over portions of the Lake Michigan and Huron nearshore waters.
Gales may continue into Friday night, but there will be a diminishing
trend through the remainder of the night.

A gale watch is already out for Lake Michigan, will do the same for
Lake Huron.
