Evening composite analysis reveals weakening cyclonic flow at the
surface and aloft across the western Great Lakes. Lake induced
cloud cover remains shrouded across central and eastern upper
Michigan down through northern lower Michigan. Very little lake
induced precip involved. We have see a few flurries from time to
time here on the hill and there may be some flurries/very light
snow showers in eastern upper with some OK lake banding coming off
the east side of the lake. Upstream, Ridging/surface high
pressure and axis of warmer air is close...pressing into the upper
Midwest this evening.

Cloud cover is the main forecast concern tonight. Ridging,
surface high pressure, warmer and drier air will edge into the
region through tonight and continue through the day Tuesday.
Question is will it be enough to thin out the lake StCu during the
overnight hours. Given the fairly strong temp inversion at ~850Mb
and the nighttime cooling cycle I'm gonna err on the side of
cloudy through tonight with better thinning/clearing taking shape
on Tuesday. That side, SW parts of the CWA could see some
clearing with short fetches off the lake and indeed there are
some holes down that way now.

Otherwise, a relatively quiet night with diminishing winds and
lows in the vicinity of normal.

.NEAR TERM...(Through Tonight)

...Clearing Skies...

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...High pressure is beginning to nose its
way into the Upper Great Lakes as evidenced by the dry air that is
limiting the lake effect clouds. However, the real clearing won't
happen until the ridge axis moves through and the winds switch to
the SW and the warmer 850 mb air moves into the region. This is
expected to happen sometime this evening when the -6c 850 mb air
moves from the middle of the lake to N Lake Michigan. Then the winds
begin to change to the southwest.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Not much in the way of concerns. With
nothing on radar, the only concern is that the cloud cover hangs in
for a little longer going into Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM...(Tuesday through Thursday)

...Turning milder again with light precip returning Wed night...

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Sprawling surface high pressure sitting
over Michigan Tuesday morning will slowly drift eastward the rest of
the day. Southerly return flow and broad upper ridging in its wake
will lead to a period of warm air advection and a steady increase in
atmospheric moisture through midweek. Mid-level energy coming ashore
the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday will help to carve out a deep
trough over the nation's midsection Wednesday night into Thursday.
At the surface, this will induce a clipper-type system passing
through Ontario and dragging a cold front through the Upper Great
Lakes on Thursday.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Precip chances Wednesday night into
Thursday.

Quiet, dry weather will prevail across northern Michigan Tuesday
into Wednesday with ridging overhead. A slow warming trend will
develop with some sun, especially Tuesday across northern Lower. A
plume of higher moisture will then spread into northern Michigan
through the day Wednesday, resulting in increasing clouds ahead of
the approaching upper trough. Weak DPVA lifting northeast within the
trough looks to introduce a chance of precip across mainly eastern
Upper Wednesday evening. Forcing never really looks to get very
concentrated/organized to produce any widespread precip thereafter,
despite favorable moisture in play (PWATs 2-3 standard deviations
above the mean for mid-December). So will retain just chance PoPs
for the majority of the forecast area heading into Thursday as the
cold front approaches. Above freezing temperatures near the surface
will initially support just rain across eastern Upper Wed evening.
As precip chances spread eastward overnight, temperatures may drop
near or just below freezing in some areas (particularly our
southeastern counties) to perhaps result in patchy freezing drizzle
or light freezing rain. If low temperatures stay on the warmer end
of guidance this may not be an issue, but consensus does indicate
the potential for freezing temperatures in some areas. Don't
anticipate any high impacts given the light precip amounts expected,
but can't rule out some slick spots on secondary roads. Just light
rain expected during the day Thursday as temperatures climb through
the 30s.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

The cold front is progged to cross through northern Michigan
Thursday evening, interacting with the developing system ejecting
northeast from the Gulf States. Guidance has been shifting the track
of this system farther east, trending towards keeping the bulk of
its precipitation off to our east. Have adjusted PoPs accordingly
from late Thursday night through Friday, with largely a rain/snow
mix expected during that time. Somewhat colder air looks to wrap in
around the backside of this system, changing precip to all snow and
perhaps offering marginal support for light lake effect activity
heading into the weekend...certainly nothing impressive. A passing
system may bring additional light snow late in the weekend. An early
look at Christmas Eve suggests pretty quiet weather as high pressure
passes through the Ohio Valley, and no major storm system is on the
horizon for Christmas, either. Temperatures will trend closer to
seasonal normals over the holiday weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)
Issued at 1041 PM EST Mon Dec 17 2018

Shroud of lake induced MVFR stratocu persists across most of northern
lower Michigan. Axis of warmer (and drier) low level air is just
upstream through the plains and will be edging into the region
overnight through Monday. This will eventually scour out the MVFR
cloud cover. However, it will be a slow process at least through
tonight given a decent low level inversion and the nighttime
cooling cycle. Thus, I've kept all terminal sites MVFR through the
night. That said, It's possible that MBL and TVC thin out their
cloud cover over the next several hours.

More agressive clearing will take shape on Tuesday with all areas
becoming VFR.

Winds diminish tonight and remain under 10 knots on Tuesday
backing out of the south. LLWS is possible Tuesday night, beyond
the current TAF cycle.

.MARINE...
Issued at 318 PM EST Mon Dec 17 2018

Tonight through Wednesday...High pressure continues to build into
the Upper Great Lakes, slackening the pressure gradients, allowing
the winds to diminish quickly this evening. The only issue is how
fast the winds diminish on the shore of Lake Huron from the Bridge
to Middle island. Presque Isle Light was still gusting to 35 knots
as of 3 pm (20z). However, think that this should fall off quickly
toward 00z, if not sooner. So may have to make a release time
decision on lowering the Gale warning to a small craft advisory.
However, the winds by 06z, should be below small craft, although
waves may not be. however, by 12z. everything should be less than
small craft criteria. Winds increase Tuesday afternoon, and possibly
get to small craft on Lake Michigan. Gales may be a concern between
21z and 03z along the NW Lower shoreline with the SW Wind and the
coastal convergence, but seems unlikely at this point. However, it
looks like small craft conditions continue through the day on
Wednesday.
