.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High impact weather potential: Accumulating snows in eastern upper
down into far NW lower Michigan today.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Broad upper troughing was seen early this morning across the region,
with a shortwave trough digging SE into the upper Midwest. This has
helped induce fairly weak sfc low pressure that was moving into srn
MN. DPVA and WAA was trying to develop some light synoptic snow
across the upper Mississippi valley and western Great Lakes, but
there was some fairly dry air in the 800-600mb layer (over nrn
Michigan too) that was earlier hampering the snow development. We
have finally seen some very light snows making it to the ground over
the last hour or so. Also, a cold front had dropped into eastern
upper Michigan, which was associated with a band of lake enhanced
snow that had some pockets of heavier snow embedded within the
front's low level convergence. This snow impacted the Whitefish
Point area of far NW Chippewa county in eastern upper Michigan.
South of the front, there was some weak 10kt 1000-850mb westerly low
level winds with 16-17c delta t's, but we have not seen any renewed
lake response, although there may be some enhanced snows out over
nrn Lake Michigan due to land breezes from the weak winds. Further
upstream into Canada, was an area of sfc high pressure over
Manitoba.

The aforementioned shortwave will swing SE through the region, with
it's weak low pressure crossing nrn lower Michigan. The high
pressure from Manitoba drops SE as well, settling into the Plains by
late tonight, with a ridge axis extending back NE through Lake
Superior and Ontario. Total deep layer -divQ forcing will be
weakening through the day and will be focused more so across eastern
upper and far nrn lower Michigan. Some of this forcing is going to
be further wasted in the atmospheric moistening process, which will
impact the synoptic snow component of total snow expectation.

Looking into the lake component, there are some changes seen in the
latest data sets. The 1000-850mb flow becomes lighter and quite
variable by the time the deeper synoptic moisture and seeder-feeder
process can begin. This would lessen the time for lake enhanced snow
to impact the counties under a winter weather advisory, as well as
limit the inland penetration of of lake snows. The best low level
convergence and lake component will still be in and around the
Straits region, as well as the advised counties, but may very well
have to lower snow amounts a bit. Will still let the scenario play
out and keep the advisory going, but certainly am not planning on
adding any other counties. If there was a county, would likely be
Mackinac county of eastern upper Michigan.

The shortwave weakens by this evening as it crosses nrn Michigan
along with the sfc low. Colder air filters back into the region as
winds turn northerly. Increasing overlake instability occurs, but
there is also some fairly significant dry air that comes along for
the ride. Periods of pretty light lake effect snow is expected in
NW/NNW flow regimes, but with minimal accumulations.

Highs today in the mid to upper 20s in eastern upper, with the lower
half of the 30s in nrn lower. Lows tonight could be quite chilly
outside of those NW/NNW flow regimes, as skies are likely to clear
out for temperatures to bottom out in the single digits to 10-15F.
Upper teens to lower half of the 20s for the NW/NNW flow regimes.

High Impact Weather Potential...Light accumulations of snow expected
Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night across eastern Upper and
northwest Lower.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...A ridge of high pressure at the surface
will slide across northern Michigan on Tuesday, quickly displaced by
a developing clipper system progged to drop southeast through the
Upper Great Lakes Tuesday night. A strong surface high accompanied
by a colder airmass will slide in from Canada on Wednesday behind
this departing system.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Snow potential through the period,
especially Tuesday night.

Cold 850mb temperatures to start the day Tuesday will promote some
lingering northerly flow lake effect snow showers during the
morning. The surface ridge sliding overhead will quickly cause winds
to back southwesterly during the afternoon, however, with warm air
advection aloft tempering lake processes. Deeper moisture begins
to increase again by late afternoon into early evening in advance of
an approaching clipper system, which is progged to ride from
northern Lake Superior into eastern Lake Huron. A cold front
accompanying this system will drop southward through northern
Michigan overnight to provide synoptic support, but lake enhancement
will be the main concern as this system passes through. Delta-Ts
will be greatest across eastern Upper as colder air plunges south,
but even across northwest Lower lake-induced instability will be
supportive. Lake aggregate troughing off Lake Superior will also
produce more impressive surface convergence across eastern Upper
than along the northwest Lower shoreline. Although forecast
soundings show inversion heights initially near 10 kft, moisture
rapidly strips out from top down as subsidence increases behind the
upper wave. Would also like to see steeper low level lapse rates,
but weak warm air advection just above the surface will limit
updraft strength. All in all, total snowfall from this event Tuesday
afternoon-night looks to range from around 1 to 3 inches, highest
across the Tip of the Mitt.

Strong cold air advection will develop behind this clipper system
late Tuesday night into Wednesday, with low temperatures dropping
into the teens and highs only in the teens to low 20s north of M-32.
Light northerly flow lake effect snow showers or flurries will
linger into Wednesday but with little to no impact.

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

A strong Canadian surface high will slide across the Upper Great
Lakes region Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day, with warm air
advection and building heights aloft as the high moves downstream.
The mid-level ridge won't drift overhead until late Thursday night,
leading to a boost in temperatures for the end of the week. Looking
like mostly quiet regional weather for Thanksgiving Day into Friday,
but troughing developing upstream will bring another system through
the region Friday night into Saturday. The more moderate
temperatures look to favor a period of rain during the day Saturday
and will linger into Sunday before cooler temps return next week.

Lake enhanced snow will bring worsening conditions late
tonight/Monday.

Cold front pushing into eastern upper MI this evening will
continue to make slow southward progress. As it does so, and as an
upper level disturbance approaches, lake enhanced snow will
develop late tonight. This will bring a lengthy period of IFR
conditions to PLN, with shorter periods of IFR at the other TAF
sites.

Mainly light winds thru the daylight hours Monday. Northerly winds
will increase Monday evening.

An area of low pressure crosses the region today, bringing some
light synoptic and lake enhanced snow, while keeping wind speeds
suppressed in a looser pressure gradient. However, the departure of
low pressure will result in the development of a fairly brief period
of advisory level gusts to portions of the Lake Michigan and Lake
Huron nearshore waters. Higher pressure and lighter winds move in
over the region by late tonight into Tuesday morning. The next low
pressure moves in late Tuesday into Wednesday, with a good chance
for advisory level wind speeds both ahead of, and behind this
system.
