Pattern synopsis and forecast:
Pretty quiet out there early this morning for Nrn Michigan. Sfc high
pressure was anchored over New England, with it's axis draped back
over nrn Michigan, which remained in a region of limited forcing,
stuck between two low pressure systems in a split upper level flow
regime. This flow was resulting in two separate weather systems of
note. One low pressure was associated with the srn branch of the jet
stream, which was impacting the Ohio Valley with a plethora of
precipitation and precipitation type issues, while also bringing
some high level clouds to the SE CWA. The other was buried within
faster westerlies aloft, crossing SC Canada and the Dakotas. While
we were under a southerly WAA return flow, the low level air mass
remains cold enough for overlake instability to lead to lake effect
clouds and likely flurries for far western Chip/Mack counties of
eastern upper Michigan. In between, skies were clear and
temperatures were plummeting (KGOV is at 6F at 4am).
The main forcing associated with the low pressure in the Ohio valley
will remain well off to our south and west through tonight, but
moisture does deepen enough with time, as the nrn fringe deformation
zone sneaks up into the SE CWA for a potential 1-2" of snow for late
this afternoon and evening. The nrn stream shortwave sharpens with
time, and drives in it's own area of low pressure, mainly overnight
tonight. Nothing too exciting, but skies will thicken with clouds,
and light synoptic snows will feed overlake instability/lake effect
in SW flow regimes, impacting eastern upper and NW lower Michigan
with an inch or two of snow as well.
High temperatures will be in the middle 30s with lows tonight in the
upper 20s most areas.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal.
General troughiness persists in the east with a ridge situated over
the west coast. A clipper system swinging down out of Saskatchewan
will interact with moisture wrapping around the northwest side of a
southern track low headed toward New England. Moisture from this
southern system will aid in snow shower production for much of the
region during Friday's morning hours. The fast moving clipper will
swing over lake Superior through the day with its associated frontal
boundary moving through with more CAA filtering in behind it on
northwest winds. Overlake instability remains decent with delta-T's
increasing to 17 C through the day, producing light lake effect
showers in the typical northwest flow belts during the afternoon. In
the wake of this we'll see a quick shot of subsidence along with
drier air filtering in overnight. At the surface high pressure
slides by to our southwest, keeping us in northerly flow through
Saturday. This shift in the wind will bring some lake effect snow to
locations near Grand Traverse Bay as well as much of Eastern Upper.
Temperatures warm into the mid 30s Friday and fall back a good 4 to
8 degrees again heading into the weekend.

Forecast concerns: Minimal.
Troughing remains in place over the Great Lakes from the second half
of the weekend through mid-week. Ripples in this general flow will
produce plenty of chances for lake effect showers to continue. In
particular frontal boundaries look to move through Sunday night into
Monday and again on Wednesday. Temperatures remain in the upper 20s
and low 30s through Tuesday, but milder air looks to move in
midweek.

High pressure sliding through the region will bring solid VFR
conditions to the terminal sites through most of the day today.
Meanwhile, a weather system in the SE states will lift northward
through the Atlantic coast, while another low pressure system
swings into the northern Great Lakes tonight into Friday. This
will bring increasing cloud cover and chances for snow, with
MVFR/IFR CIGS and VSBYS expected later this afternoon and
tonight, particularly across NE lower Michigan.

Winds and waves will reach SCA criteria for most of the forecast
period, as the pressure gradient tightens out ahead of deepening
low pressure that crosses the region late tonight into Friday.
This gradient remains tight into much of Friday night, behind the
passage of a cold front that swings winds from the SW to out of
the NW.
