The remaining snow showers that exited NW lower, have been
weakening with time in NE lower. Therefore, cancelled the entire
Winter Weather Advisory for nrn lower. Snow showers will try and
regenerate later tonight off Lake Michigan. Minor accumulations
expected.

Issued at 348 PM EDT Fri Apr 6 2018

High impact weather potential: Snow showers. Intense at times for
the afternoon, but weakening with time into the evening. Showers
combined with gusty winds and poor visibility, result in hazardous
driving conditions.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Main shortwave trough and an associated sfc trough is working across
nrn Michigan this afternoon. DPVA ahead of the wave and enhanced low
level convergence with the sfc trough is focusing a band of heavier
snow showers that have already been impressive from moisture flux
off the Lakes and deep instability (inversion heights to near
15kft). Latest satellite imagery shows much drier air behind this
wave (hardly any cu development). Further north, another shortwave
and sfc trough with relatively deeper moisture, was wrapping
southward through Ontario, and was also associated with snow shower
activity. Temperatures were quite cold, generally in the upper 20s
to lower 30s, slightly less cold in downsloping areas closer to
Saginaw Bay.

The snow showers will gradually weaken and depart east into this
evening, while that much drier air fills into the primarily nrn
lower Michigan. This is now expected to suppress any decent lake
effect snow showers coming in off Lake Michigan. The winter weather
advisory will be able to be cancelled early. The second wave from
Ontario clips eastern upper with the better moisture/deeper
instability. While inversion heights lower with subsidence behind
the initial wave, they will still be up around 6-7kft. It is purely
the moisture (with the wave and long fetch length) that will result
in better snow shower activity in eastern upper. Snowfall totals
however are still not expected to be overly impressive there, with 1-
3 inches across Chippewa county. In NW lower, less than an inch most
areas, with possible higher localized amounts in the higher terrain.
The low level steering flow actually looks to be slightly
anticyclonic to help suppress accumulation.

Heading into Saturday, to no surprise we are still in upper
troughing in the same persistent upper level synoptic pattern.
Inversion heights lower a bit more to 5-6kft, and with less total BL
moisture. There is plenty enough moisture though to transition to
scattered to numerous diurnally driven snow showers, possibly aided
to a degree by sheared out vorticity on the backside of the upper
trough. Additional accumulations less than an inch, with only the
nrn reached of Chippewa county, where there could be locally higher
amounts up to 2 inches.

Lows tonight in the teens most areas with highs Saturday again in
the upper 20s to lower 30s.

threat Monday...

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Large scale pattern continues to feature
an upper vortex centered over Atlantic Canada...elongated back to
the southwest as short wave energy swings around the southern
periphery of this broad circulation.  Pattern back over the Pacific
is more blocky with high-latitude -WPO...low amplitude ridge over
the western U.S. extends north to cutoff high north of Siberia.
Great Lakes will remain under the influence of long wave troughing
to start the weekend...but upper flow will back with rising heights
Sunday as the remnants of the system impacting the west coast this
weekend cross the nation's midsection.  This system will break up
into several pieces...one of which should impact Michigan starting
Monday.

Surface ridging forecast to build into Michigan Saturday night/
Sunday...at this point not looking at a big surface response
associated with Monday's short wave trough passage.  Overall
pressure gradient looks weak through the short term forecast period.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Lake convection likely to be ongoing in
weakening northwest boundary layer flow Saturday night...elongated
latent PV anomaly drops into the upper Lakes which may give a
synoptic boost to inversion heights.  Have bumped up PoPs from the
consensus forecast Saturday night...and maybe some diurnally boosted
snow showers/flurries on Sunday.  Sunday afternoon highs continue to
run well below normal (around 15 degrees below early April normals).

Approaching short wave trough the next forecast issue heading into
early next week...with an elongated swath of deformation/
isentropically driven precipitation spreading toward at least Lower
Michigan by Monday.  How far north this gets is still rather
uncertain given rather chaotic demise of this weekend's Pacific
system...so plan to be cautious with the PoPs at this point (precip
type also likely to be influence by boundary layer thermal
considerations).

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Friday)

The pattern in the extended period is no surprise for the
transitional season we're in...meaning a relatively active pattern
with a change every day or so.  That said, it does look like we'll
remain clocked in to the colder than normal side of things.

There will be some straggling precipitation on Tuesday as one low
moves out.  Some weak, transient high pressure tries to dry things
out and moderate temperatures a bit starting Wednesday.  Guidance is
showing some lake generated chance pops for Wednesday...but I
wouldn't be surprised if we end up precip free for hump day.  Even
if we do...it will be short lived as another short wave a better
chance for more precipitation on Thursday.  The form of this precip
will be diurnally dictated...as overnight lows will be cold enough
to support white over wet.

Friday is too far out to be terribly deterministic...but looks like
the pendulum will swing back toward dry.  That said (and remember,
it's still waaaay early) guidance is beginning to hint at a big low
spinning up in the central conus on Friday and then heading east.

Chilly nw winds continue, in advance of cold high pressure in the
northern plains. Drier air has entered the region, with somewhat
less in the way of lake effect clouds and snow showers as we move
into evening. The clouds should return to the Lake MI TAF sites
tonight (though primarily VFR). Snow showers will also see a bit
of an uptick, but not enough to introduce a cig/vsby restriction
to the TAFs. A brief incursion of MVFR cigs/vsbys can not be ruled
out tonight and Saturday, especially at MBL/TVC/PLN.

Brisk nw winds will persist, albeit not as windy as Friday
afternoon.

A tighter pressure gradient has been working in over the Great Lakes
this afternoon, with increasing wind speeds/gusts, which will reach
gale strength from time to time in all nearshore waters. Winds do
slowly subside through the night and into Saturday, but remain gusty
with needed small craft advisories. This weakening trend will
continue through Sunday as higher pressure settles in over the
region. Lake effect snow showers will also slowly fade through
Sunday.
