...Showers through tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential: None.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Afternoon composite analysis reveals
sharp negatively tilted short wave trough stretching from central
Canada down trough the western Great Lakes, effectively bisecting
the state NW-SE. Well defined vorticity center and dry punch of
air is currently rotating through the Saginaw Valley area. Surface
low pressure is over Lake Superior with a cold/occluded front
arcing through Lake Huron. Behind the front, wrap around moisture
and colder air aloft is currently sliding into the region. Daytime
heating and very modest convective instability, combined with
lingering forcing with the upper trough has sparked some renewed
showers across the CWA in the last few hours.

Upstream, deformation region of this system along with additional
showers are rotating through the western Lake Superior/western
Upper Michigan region, and will be sliding through the CWA
tonight.

Tonight: Wrap around moisture and cooler air aloft will continue
to produce heating induced showers through the early evening
hours, primarily across north central and northeastern lower MI.
Deformation forcing ("wrap-around") will bring additional showers
into the CWA later this evening and into the overnight hours,
mainly across the northern portion of the CWA. Deepening low level
moisture per forecast soundings suggest that drizzle could re-
enter the picture again later tonight. But in the interest of
keeping it simple, will just go with shower wording.

Thunderstorms: 18Z SPC meso-analysis shows a few hundred J/KG of
MLCAPE in a thin sliver across north central and northeast lower
Michigan. Thus, still cannot completely rule out the possibility
of an isolated TSTM over the E/SE part of northern lower MI into
the early evening. But still not convinced there is enough
instability to get the updrafts high enough (-20C) for lightning.
Unless that changes soon, will leave TSTM out of the forecast.

.SHORT TERM...(Monday through Wednesday)
Issued at 323 PM EDT Sun Jun 3 2018

High Impact Weather Potential: Gusty winds Monday could cause marine
issues.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: H5 troughing that helped to initiate
showers across the area this morning looks to stall a bit as it
begins to lift into Quebec. An additional area of troughing
currently over the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border will dig SE, phasing
with the troughing currently lifting into Ontario. This phasing will
briefly strengthen the troughing into a cutoff low, stalling the
system briefly near James Bay Monday before pinwheeling another
shortwave through the Great Lakes Tuesday. Height rises will try to
work into the area as early as Tuesday with high pressure passing to
our south, but the stalled system will dampen those height rises a
bit. The ridging will continue for much of the week, with a passing
system mid-week providing another brief disruption.

Primary Forecast Concerns: The gusty winds Monday remain the primary
concern over the short term. With the stalled low near James Bay,
and high pressure nosing into the region, a tight pressure gradient
will set up along with mid level cold air advection on the back side
of the low. That cold advection will aid in mixing down strong winds
aloft. While a touch lower than yesterday, some model soundings
continue to have 40kt+ winds at the top of the mixed layer into
Monday night. Conditions really become favorable for mixing down
those higher winds by Monday afternoon. The mid level cold advection
will bring 1000-850mb lapse rates near or above 7C/km in a swath
from Whitefish Bay and extending down to just north of Thunder Bay.
This should help mix down some of those 35-40kt winds. Still a
little uncertain on how gusty the Lake Michigan side will get, with
the tighter gradient and better instabilities to the northeast.
Guidance that is strongest with the gusts, hitting low end gale
warnings, on the Huron side remains a bit lighter over northern Lake
Michigan. Right now my inclination would be to put up Gale warnings
where the watch currently exists, except for northern Lake Michigan
which would stay in the watch for another period. Tuesday morning
with the gradient relaxing, and stability increasing, winds will
lighten.

Scattered rain showers are possible on Thursday as a weak low
pressure system moves by to our north. This should drag a weak cold
front through our area sometime early on Thursday. High pressure
starts to nudge in quickly behind the departing system. This will
result in a dry and mild ending to the work week into the first half
of the weekend. Then rain chances move back in on Sunday, although
models are less consistent with timing and intensity of this system.

Low pressure is located over Lake Superior with a cold front
arcing down through Lake Huron. Lots of wrap around cloud cover of
the MVFR to IFR variety remains across northern Michigan with IFR
CIGs primarily across upper Michigan. Low pressure system will
slowly rotate out of the Great Lakes through tonight with a
gradually clearing trend anticipated on Monday.

Weather: Scattered rain showers will impact northern lower Michigan
this afternoon primarily affecting PLN/APN. Additional "wrap
around" showers roll through northern Michigan tonight. CIGS will
mostly remain MVFR at the TAF sites although prepare for occasional
IFR CIGS.

Winds: Westerly on the lighter side through tonight. Gusty W/NW
winds develop on Monday with gusts 20 to 30 knots anticipated.

With a tightening pressure gradient and increasing over lake
instability, winds will begin to pick up tonight. At least small
craft advisory conditions are expected through Tuesday over Lakes
Michigan and Huron, as well as Whitefish Bay. The gale watch has
been upgraded to a gale warning for Whitefish Bay, the St. Marys
River, and northern Lake Huron zones as low end gale force gusts
are expected. The gale watch for northern Lake Michigan remains as
is for now. Winds will lighten through the day Tuesday as low
pressure continues to lift through Quebec, relaxing the pressure
gradient and increasing stability.
