.UPDATE...
Issued at 1115 AM EDT Thu Apr 5 2018

Current radar, satellite and sfc obs showing no precipitation
falling across much of the cwa, while a low lvl cloud deck
begins to expand across northern Michigan. Current area of snow
moving across nrn Minnesota and Wisconsin (associated with a weak
upper trough and sfc boundary) will drop into the wrn Great Lakes
later this afternoon. This area of snow will eventually
overspread all of nrn Lower by this evening.

Based on current trends, removed pops this morning and early
afternoon across much of the cwa. Increased pops around 18z over the
wrn lakes, before increasing chances of snow over the ern lakes this
evening. No other major changes were made.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

...Increasing chances of snow today thru tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential...Minor. Light accumulations of
snow...especially tonight.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Large area of strong high pressure is
centered thru the length of the Mississippi Valley and thru the Ohio
Valley early this morning. Aside from a small area of low clouds and
possibly a few flurries along our southern border...skies are partly
to mostly clear across our CWA at this hour. Clearing combined with
weak low level winds have allow temps to plummet into the single
digits for some interior locations.

Meanwhile...weak low pressure is centered well north of Lake
Superior. This system will drop SE thru Ontario...slowly dragging a
cold front thru our area late tonight and Friday. Temps will stay
sufficiently cold to provide lake enhancement as chances of snow
increase along and ahead of this system...despite some weak WAA
taking place ahead of the cold front. Low level winds will back form
the NW early this morning to the W/SW by this afternoon in advance
of this system...redirecting any lake enhanced snow showers
northward to the Straits and far Northern and NW Lower Michigan...
as well as far Northern Chippewa county. Synoptic lift will
strengthen across Eastern Upper Michigan during the afternoon as the
northern stream low and cold front approach. Still...any new snow
amounts should remain minor...especially with high temps warming
into the low to mid 30s this afternoon. New snow across Eastern
Upper Michigan today will be around an inch...with portions of
Northern and NW Lower Michigan receiving less than an inch of new
snow today.

Synoptic lift will further strengthen across the rest of our CWA
tonight...especially overnight as the cold front arrives. POPs will
continue to increase...with lake enhancement still focused mainly
across NW Lower Michigan via W/SW low level flow ahead of the cold
front. Expect these enhancement areas will see up to 2 inches of new
snow...with the rest of our CWA receiving an inch or less of
additional snow tonight. Low temps will cool mainly into the low to
mid 20s tonight.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

...Clipper system departs, giving way to lake effect snow...

High Impact Weather Potential...Departing clipper system will yield
around 1-3 inches of total snowfall through Friday morning. Lake
effect snow expected heading into the weekend, but generally light
accumulations.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...A potent shortwave will drop into the
Upper Midwest early Friday, pivoting across the Upper Great Lakes. A
surface low will quickly develop in response over the region, but
models still show some variance in its intensity, track, and
timing. A cold front will push through Friday morning as the system
departs, ushering in another blast of colder air that will linger
through the weekend. This will also kick off a period of lake effect
heading into the weekend.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Details surrounding a departing clipper-
type system Friday morning, then lake effect chances heading into
the weekend.

We're starting to see some better agreement among models for the
track of the clipper system Thursday night into Friday morning.
Consensus favors the developing surface low tracking across northern
Lower, but at this time it's tough to get any more specific than
that. There will be a plume of relatively higher PWATs (around
0.25") extending into northern Michigan for this system to tap into.
Additionally, forecast soundings show rather impressive omega
through Friday morning coincident with the dendritic growth zone, so
this should all promote a fairly quick-hitting but substantial snow
event. Snow ratios this time of year can be tricky, but after
cutting back model ratios a bit to around 15:1 through tomorrow
morning, a general 1-3 inches of total snowfall is plausible across
most of the forecast area through midday Friday, highest within the
snowbelts due to some lake enhancement.

Heading into the afternoon, strong cold air advection behind
the departing cold front will lead to falling daytime temperatures
and a transition to lake effect. Pretty decent onshore flow/lift
also coincident with DGZ across northwest Lower and a portion of
eastern Upper. Also looks like a decent amount of low level moisture
and inversion heights between 10-15 kft. All in all, a pretty
favorable lake effect setup, even into Saturday. But QPF just isn't
all that impressive, so snow amounts aren't expected to get out of
hand. The other forecast issue will be gusty winds, as the strong
CAA promotes fairly deep mixing Friday afternoon. Gusts to 35 mph
look possible, which will likely result in additional blowing and
drifting.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Periodic snow chances through the
period, including a possible clipper system Sunday night into Monday.

High pressure building into the region Saturday night into Sunday
should lead to gradually diminishing lake effect chances. Another
clipper system is progged for Sunday night into Monday, but its
track is far from certain at this time. There does look to be enough
cold air in place through Monday morning to keep precip generally in
the form of snow, but by afternoon there may be a mix with or
transition to rain for northern Lower at least. Upper trough
lingering overhead through Tuesday will promote additional chances
for precip. By the second half of the week, a building ridge over
the central CONUS will start to shift into the Great Lakes,
providing somewhat of a long awaited warmup.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)

MVFR cigs and VFR vsby will continue across nrn Michigan TAF
sites this afternoon, as BKN cloud deck expands in advance of
approaching upper wave and weak sfc boundary. Vsby will diminish
to MVFR tonight as snow overspreads nrn MI, occasionally lowering
to IFR btw 03z and 12z as snow intensifies in advance of nearing
upper wave. Conds improve to at least MVFR Friday afternoon as the
weaken system exits east.

Winds and waves will reach SCA criteria across all of our nearshore
areas today as low level winds strengthen ahead of an approaching
cold front. Light lake effect snow showers will impact some
nearshore areas today...with chances of snow increasing tonight as
the upstream cold front draws closer. Gales are possible on the
nearshore waters of Northern Lake Huron Friday afternoon into Friday
night in the wake of the cold front.
