Circle of virga slowly encompassing the APX radar. No real sign of
anything hitting the ground, though some of the transient stronger
returns down along M-55 could have gotten some flakes thru. Further
west along that same fgen band, light snow is falling over Door
County and vicinity, with somewhat healthier snowfall rates (vsbys
1-3sm) over n central WI.

Radar trends and near-term models agree that most of our snowfall
overnight will be between M-72 and M-28, as the fgen band pivots
a bit further northward and then stalls along a e-w axis. Snowfall
amounts tonight will be light, maybe locally approaching 1.5"
along the M-68 corridor in far northern lower MI by 12z/8am.

Will adjust forecast to add some of the above details. The main
show clearly kicks in tomorrow (precip rates will start to ramp up
toward midday). No changes to that part of the forecast.

.NEAR TERM...(Tonight through Tuesday)
Issued at 348 PM EDT Mon Apr 2 2018

High impact weather potential: Light snows tonight, with heavier
snows developing Tuesday, with a small chance of mixing with a
little rain, freezing rain and sleet in the far SE CWA.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Relatively flat zonal upper level flow and loose thermal gradient
were across the eastern half/two-thirds of the country, with only
some weak vorticity traversing the Great Lakes resulting in
increasing higher level clouds. Sfc high pressure and a corridor of
drier air were laid out across the srn Lakes, but was getting pushed
east this afternoon in advance of developing low pressure in the lee
of the Rockies. This low pressure is being induced by a potent
shortwave trough working through the nrn Rockies, on the nose of a
100+kt upper jet. There was some stronger vorticity that has
continued to work on the low pressure's sfc troughing, which extends
into the nrn plains and now also into the upper Mississippi valley.
As expected, general light snows have expanded with time and were
pressing into western Wisconsin.

The aforementioned light snows will likely continue to press
eastward and across primarily the nrn CWA, generally after midnight,
but there is some uncertainty in how well this area of snow will
hold together. Forcing will be weak with this snow, with only low
end WAA and weak DPVA. Really not expecting more than an inch of
snow, but as winds turn more easterly late tonight in advance of the
parent sfc low pressure, there may be a little lake enhancement
(fairly shallow depending on which data set is looked at). At least
for a few hours, inversion heights are around 4500 feet. This could
boost snows up around far ne lower by another inch. Confidence in
this is not too high.

The more impactful weather develops tomorrow. Nrn Michigan will just
continue to see increasing forcing from stronger shortwave energy
working into the Great Lakes. Low to mid level WAA strengthens, as
does DPVA, while we gradually enter into a right entrance region of
the upper jet. Late in the day, as the low pressure nears Detroit,
forcing is maximized and we even get into some frontogenetical
forcing as the thermal gradient tightens, especially closer to
Saginaw Bay. This to no surprise is where the better QPF ought to
reside, and which most data sets agree.

Thermal profiles suggest all snow for most all of nrn Michigan, with
the exception for the potential of seeing some mixed precipitation
closer to Saginaw Bay where there is a chance for rain, sleet, and
freezing rain. Total QPF of 0.40" to 0.50" over nrn lower with 0.15"
to 0.30" across most of eastern upper. Quite the gradient in snow
ratios with highest 16/17:1 in eastern upper to as low as 7/9:1
closer to Saginaw Bay. This results in total snowfall of 3 to 6
inches across most of nrn Michigan, with maybe an extra inch over
far NE lower where that lake enhancement comes into play. When
combined with the similar snowfall expectations for Tuesday night
(see below), the grand total comes to 5 to 13 inches, locally higher
in NE lower, and the greatest snowfall axis extending from Traverse
City through Rogers City. One final note, the easterly flow will
likely lead to smaller snowfall across downsloping areas into Benzie
and Manistee counties. This does make sense, and hi-res data has
picked up on it. Those two counties, and a handful closer to Saginaw
Bay will be in advisories (where it can get mixy while also in lower
snow ratios/less snow). Eastern upper, further away from the
stronger forcing, will also go into an advisory. Winter storm
warnings all others.

Lows in the middle to upper 20s most areas with highs on Tuesday in
the low to mid 30s.

.SHORT TERM...(Tuesday night through Thursday)

...Ending this Storm...

High Impact Weather Potential...Winter storm that is still showing
signs of moderate to heavy snow in the forecast area. The snow would
be heavy and wet producing at the least slippery road conditions.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...The sfc low looks to be in SE Lower on
the GFS and the ECMWF is in NC Indiana at 00z/Wed. Both of the
HiResWindow models (ARW and NMM) have the low at the MI-IN-OH border
at the same time. All of the models have the sfc low near Toronto by
12z/Wed. As the low moves into SW Ontario, N Lower gets into the
better F-gen zone on the back side of the sfc low. This up lift and
the below freezing temperature profile will produce 6-8+" of snow
across most of N Lower, with lower amounts where the warmer air may
just get into the region to either mix with or be rain. The area
where the rain would be most likely would be along and south of M-
55, but it looks like advisory amounts of snow are more likely than
the rain overnight as the sfc temperatures fall. Wednesday, We get
into a NW lake effect pattern as the 850 mb temperatures fall to
around -15c in N Lake Michigan, but the moisture in the 850-700 mb
layer looks a bit thin with the ECMWF and the GFS having 40-50% and
the NAM is even drier. This will produce minor snow amounts over the
region. The winds shift Wednesday night and Thursday producing more
minor lake effect snow.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Snow amounts. As we get higher amounts
from what looks like a slam dunk, there are always some inherent
issues that could produce less than the amounts that we are
predicting. The Tuesday/Tuesday night time frame, when most of the
snow is expected, is the most dynamic, in terms of the storm moving
through the southern part of the state. As we have seen with the
previous storm last Saturday, we can get some warm air that mixes a
little more than thought. There's also the fact that if the track
moves more north a bit (somewhat like the SREF) the amounts could be
lower, especially in the area between M-55 and M-72. There is also
the fact that the sfc temperatures warm to just above freezing,
during the daytime. This will lead to some melting, which would
lower the amounts measured. So as good as we think that the forecast
is, there are some things that give us pause.

High Impact Weather Potential...Occasional chances for snow through
the period from lake effect and passing systems.

A very active late winter pattern continues through the first week
of April and possibly beyond. Temperatures remaining below normal
will promote continued lake effect snow chances at times. The next
better organized system looks to drop south from Ontario Thursday
night into Friday with additional lake effect into the weekend.

Deteriorating conditions late tonight into Tuesday.

Low pressure in the central high plains will move se and then ne,
eventually lifting into nw Ohio by late Tuesday. Snow will
gradually expand into northern lower MI late tonight, and will
become more expansive Tuesday. Expect conditions to decrease to
MVFR and then IFR with time. MBL/TVC will likely see some rain mix
in Tue afternoon. Snow-liquid ratios will be in the lower teens.

A ne to e winds will increase into Tuesday, with some potential
20kt gusts in the afternoon.

Weak high pressure and will lighten up the winds into tonight,
before they turn easterly and ramp up through Tuesday while shifting
more E/NE ahead of low pressure heading toward Detroit. Winds
increase further Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as this low
pressure crosses the eastern Great Lakes. Widespread advisories will
develop, with likely Gales over much of Lake Michigan and Huron. In
addition, the storm system will bring moderate to heavy snow with
some of the southern nearshore waters possibly seeing a little
rain/freezing rain/sleet, especially closer to Saginaw Bay.
