Morning composite analysis reveals weak low pressure just northeast
of Georgian Bay with troughiness stretching back through northern
Michigan. Surface boundary appears to arc from central Wisconsin
up through the tip of the mitt then down through the eastern lakes
region with some colder air just barely bleeding into northern
Michigan. Aloft, upper jet core stretches from northern Wisconsin
down through NE Ohio and on to the Atlantic coast. Some modest
QG-forcing for ascent on the tail end of the upper jet acting on
the tighter thermal gradient sitting across Michigan has/is
producing a narrow pocket of light precip moving through eastern
upper Michigan/tip of the mitt/Straits region this morning, and
out into Lake Huron. A combination of light snow intermingled with
light freezing drizzle. Quiet and overcast elsewhere although
there was some dense FZFG down toward the Cadillac area earlier
that appears to be diminishing at this juncture.

Rest of today: QG-forcing will weaken through the afternoon as
moisture continues to thin top down, which will bring an end to
the aformentioned narrow corridor of light precip. May be just
cold enough in the low levels for some nuisance light lake effect
to linger this afternoon in parts of NW lower Michigan and the
U.P. Indeed, KAPX radar does show some hint of light lake effect
around the Grand Traverse Bay area in the last few hours.

Have made forecast adjustments accordingly per the above
discussion.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

...A last quiet-ish day ahead...

High impact weather potential...small chance for freezing drizzle
thru early afternoon.

Weak low pressure (1026mb) is just ne of the Sault, moving ese.
High pressure trails the low, near Winnipeg, and will skirt the
north shore of Superior late today. And low pressure continues to
evolve over the southern Rockies. That low will eject ne-ward
into the central plains thru tonight, and will be our big wx-
maker to end the week. But until then, some nuisance light precip
remains the primary concern.

Today, channeled vorticity in fast wnw flow aloft is contributing to
a period of warm/moist advection at mid levels. This is pushing an
area of light snow across n central lower MI and into ne lower/
eastern upper. Eastern upper MI already had pre-existing light
snow showers in weak nw flow off of Superior. BUFR soundings show
moisture shallowing out by mid-morning in most places, so then we
get back into the very light snow/freezing drizzle concern. This
appears to be a more relevant concern than the past couple of
days, as our antecedent cigs are low in spots (less than 1k ft at
CAD, for example). Forecast will continue to reflect a chance for
both light snow showers and spotty freezing drizzle into early
afternoon, in particular in nw lower MI. Inversion heights/
moisture both get shallower as the day proceeds, and even
flurry/drizzle concerns should wane as we move thru the afternoon.

Tonight, 500mb ridge gets pumped up into the Great lakes ahead of
the ejecting trof. Warm/moist advection will slowly work at
achieving saturation and precip via a top-down approach. Some
signs of a warm advection wing lifting into northern MI overnight,
trying to overcome some initially somewhat dry air between 12k
and 3k feet. Though the warm advection wing is far, far removed
from the better forcing/moisture to our, there is at least a small
chance of getting precip to the ground overnight. That chance
will increase very late in the overnight (after 4 am) in western
Chip/Mack Cos in eastern upper MI. The bulk of this will at least
initially fall as snow. However, the BL may be warm enough along
the nw lower MI coastline for a rain-snow mix there.

Max temps today upper 20s to lower 30s. Min temps tonight in the
upper teens to upper 20s.

.SHORT TERM...(Thursday through Friday)

...Wintry Mix, Rain, Wintry Mix...

High Impact Weather Potential...Storm system will move into the
region on Thursday and produce a wintry mix to kick things off.
Mostly likely slick roads.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Interesting to see that the NAM idea
yesterday is somewhat in the solutions from the 00z/GFS and ECMWF.
Although, not as much of a break as the NAM showed the previous
night. However, it looks like the precipitation marches across the
state by the afternoon. Then there is a transition from a wintry mix
to all rain during the afternoon with the last of the freezing
precipitation out of E Upper by Thursday evening. Models show that
dry air gets into the soundings to almost 0c, with the moisture in
the sfc to 0c layer increasing and a pretty decent wind shear in the
top part of the cloud layer. So will have drizzle in for the
Thursday overnight as we dry slot aloft. Then the moisture begin to
descend from Canada with the cold front. Will go with a short wintry
mix as the cold air invades the drizzle, before the moisture adds
aloft and the precipitation turns to snow on Friday. Friday night
looks to have some colder temperatures, but the models dry things
out pretty well. So will limit the LES production at the moment.

Primary Forecast Concerns...The wintry mix is a bit problematic with
the warm advection. Slippery conditions on the roads could be a
little more widespread if the cooler temperatures hold into the
region longer. So worst case at this point would be an advisory (or
SPS) for a few hours of a freezing drizzle until the warm air at the
sfc gets into the region.

The other issue is the possibility of the LES on Friday night. 850
mb temperatures are decently cold (-12c to -15c) by 12z/Sat, and
with the lake water temperatures still around +5c or so, we have some
decent instabilty. However, the synoptic moisture is lacking, and is
even approaching <30% in the layer so that may limit any bands to
just cloud streets.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

Extended (Saturday through Tuesday)...Saturday looks to have a
limited amounts of Lake effect snow, until the winds back SW and
warm the region again for Sunday. Monday, the models both have a
western system that begins to impact the Upper Peninsula, but the
ECMWF has a sfc low moving up the Ohio Valley which begins to spread
precipitation up into N Lower from the south as the northern system
drops in. The GFS has precipitation moving through the region from
the northern system only. However, they both look minor. Tuesday,
however, the models are on the same page, it looks like, and with
the cold air moving from Canada on the back side of the northern
system and wrap around moisture as well, we could get into a better
regime for lake effect snow just after New Year's Day.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning)

Continued MVFR to VFR.

Cool/moist low levels continue to result in persistent stratocu.
Cig heights vary, with MBL almost IFR (with a little fog
assisting), TVC/PLN MVFR, and APN VFR. Somewhat variable
conditions will persist, but most sites should become VFR for a
period late today and early tonight. Cigs will start to decrease
again late tonight, but widespread precip will wait until after
12z.

Light winds today, se winds increasing tonight. MBL is approaching
LLWS criteria by Thursday morning, not quite there yet though.

Strong low pressure will move from the southern Rockies into the
central plains and upper MS Valley by Thursday night. Se-erly
winds will increase as this system approaches, and gale watches
will be posted for most of the Lake Huron nearshore waters, as
well as for the northern tip of Lake MI.

.DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

Patchy freezing drizzle is possible through early afternoon in
northwest and north central lower Michigan.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

A storm system will push across the Great Lakes Thursday and Friday.
A wintry mix is expected across northern Michigan into Thursday
afternoon, before a transition to rain. Some difficult travel is
possible across northern Michigan Thursday morning.

Gale force wind gusts are possible on the Great Lakes Thursday and
Thursday evening.

Cold air and snow will plunge back into the Great Lakes Friday night
and Saturday, possibly generating some additional travel hazards
across northern Michigan Friday night.
