.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High impact weather potential: Accumulating snow for mainly eastern
upper Michigan.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Negatively tilted upper level shortwave and it's associated strong
sfc low pressure was in the Southern Plains early this morning,
while downstream mid level height rises were seen moving into the
Great Lakes. Deep moisture and forcing applied by WAA, A large swath
of showers and storms associated with the storm system resided from
the Central Plains back through the mid and lower Mississippi
valley, and down into Florida. This was a result of impressive
forcing in a moisture-rich environment that has been tapping the
Gulf of Mexico. Several forcing mechanisms are at play, WAA,
frontal, DPVA and strong upper divergence within a double jet
structure. Specifically here in nrn Michigan, pretty much the entire
region was engulfed in low clouds trapped underneath a pretty shallow
inversion, within a weak high pressure and light wind environment.
There were still areas that had some light fog as well, adding the
the dreary conditions.

Am not seeing any change in the current weather through this
morning, as fcst soundings suggest shallow low level moisture
remains stuck under the inversion. As we roll through the day and
night however, the Plains storms system will lift up into lower
Michigan, with easterly winds increasing and rain and snow
overtaking all areas from south to north. This occurs this afternoon
through tonight. Total deep layer -divQ will be decreasing with time
as the sfc low pressure will be occluding, but the forcing still
looks darn good for categorical Pops for all areas. There are still
some ambiguity surrounding the low level thermal regime and
evolution, but on the front end of the precipitation's arrival, the
interior higher terrain should see snow mixed in with rain, while
eastern upper should be mostly snow for the entire night tonight.
There is a period of time in eastern upper where the max lift is
targeting the DGZ, but any fluffy bigger flakes will be somewhat
offset by low SLR's (maybe up to 10:1). Can see 1-3" there, while
the interior higher terrain of nrn lower, north of M-72, may see up
to an inch. Again, would like to see a better agreement in the
thermal profile, to decrease snowfall amount ambiguity, especially
for interior nrn lower areas.

Highs today will be in the middle to upper 30s most areas. Lows
tonight ranging from the lower 30s in eastern upper and interior
sections of nrn lower, to the mid and upper 30s elsewhere.

High Impact Weather Potential...Accumulating snowfall across eastern
Upper and interior northern Lower through Sunday night.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...The upper levels of the storm system
impacting the Great Lakes region will morph into an open wave on
Sunday, carrying the surface low across Lower Michigan and into
Quebec by late evening. Shortwave energy will drop through behind
this departing system early Monday, accompanied by a colder airmass
causing H8 temperatures to drop near -9 to -10C by daybreak. Cold
northerly flow will then persist through the day as northern
Michigan lies between the departing surface low and Canadian high
pressure building over the Plains.

Primary Forecast Concerns...Gradually diminishing synoptic precip
chances through Sunday night, giving way to some lake effect by
Monday.

Isentropic ascent, deformation banding, frontogenesis, and upper
level divergence will all be present to start the day on Sunday, but
the strongest forcing will gradually weaken and exit northern
Michigan with time. As a result, expect widespread precip to
continue across the majority of the area during the day, especially
north of M-72, before gradually diminishing in intensity and
coverage Sunday evening and overnight...pushing off to the southeast
with the departing surface trough. Ptypes continue to be the main
forecast challenge, with various guidance still showing considerable
spread in low level thermal profiles on either side of the freezing
isotherm on Sunday. Have used a blend of model temperatures, which
favors all snow across eastern Upper through the period and a
progressive north to south transition from rain to snow across
northern Lower. With snow to liquid ratios expected to range from 10
to 13:1 near and north of the Straits, that area could see an
additional few inches of accumulating wet snow during the day. The
DGZ will be rather elevated in this area, roughly spanning 10-15
kft, but it will lie within the maximum omega to allow for decent
snowfall rates at times. Snow microphysics don't come together as
favorably over interior northern Lower, where less moisture within
the DGZ will promote only an additional inch or two through Sunday
night.

Synoptic snow should quickly diminish across northern Lower from
northwest to southeast Monday morning with the passing shortwave.
The influx of colder air will result in marginally supportive delta-
Ts for the development of some lake effect, but northerly flow
should keep bands mainly over the water.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Lake effect snow potential through
the week, particularly the second half of the week.

Surface high pressure over the Plains will slowly slide into the
Tennessee Valley through midweek, with low level flow becoming
westerly across northern Michigan. Delta-Ts look to remain
marginally supportive for continued lake effect in this flow regime
through the first half of the week. A shortwave moving through on
Wednesday followed by a more robust system on Thursday will likely
provide opportunities for more widespread snow showers across the
region. Temperatures will run several degrees below normal through
the period, especially towards the end of the week.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night)

Pretty much status quo into Saturday morning, with light winds,
MVFR stratus stuck under an inversion with some light fog. Through
Saturday however, a strong storm system will be in the Central
Plains, which will lift up into lower Michigan Saturday night.
Rain will overtake the airports with IFR/MVFR CIGS and VSBYS.
Temperatures appear to be too warm for much/if any period of snow.
In addition, winds will be increasing out of the east and become
gusty late today and tonight.

.MARINE...

Quiet and dreary weather with light winds will continue into this
morning, before things start ramping up later today and tonight.
Easterly winds will increase through the remainder of today and into
tonight out ahead of a strong storm system that will lift from the
Central Plains, into lower Michigan. Rains will overspread the Great
Lakes, with snow across Lake Superior. Based on the track of the
storm system across lower Michigan, winds go more light and variable
in the southern Lake Huron nearshores late tonight into Sunday,
while a tight gradient holds across much of Lake michigan up to
Whitefish Bay. This gradient then slides back over the entire region
Sunday night into Monday.

Low end gale force winds are expected across the Lake Michigan
nearshores, with solid advisory wind speeds all other areas.
