Most near-term guidance suggests a slight slowing of precip
(mostly snow) onset. Main focus/dynamics are currently only
heading toward the OH Valley, and although it will make a hard
left turn toward and into MI overnight and Friday, this will take
time. A more general, light synoptic snow doesn't break out here
until mid- morning on Friday. Before then, some lake-effect/lake-
enhanced elements do start to sprout. This is especially the case
for the Lake MI islands, on up into western Chip/Mack Cos. This
also applies for the ne lower MI coast, south of Rogers City.

...Relative Quiet Tonight, Snow Arrives Late...

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal through tonight.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: A pseudo-zonal/weak ridging flow
pattern across the Great Lakes this afternoon, downstream from
a deepening mid level short-wave over south-central Canada
dropping into the northern plains. Surface high pressure spans
the northern plains into the western Great Lakes/Ohio Valley,
still with some hints of lake aggregate troughing lingering
across the north shore of the U.P. Light lake effect showers from
earlier in the day have pretty much ended.

Modest ridging/surface high pressure and drier/warmer air continue
to slide into the region this evening and will maintain mainly
quiet weather for a good part of the night. Even some hints of
thinning cloud cover upstream. Not sure if we get that lucky
although some locations well downwind of the lakes could see some
thinning especially parts of NE lower Michigan with a downsloping
flow.

Meanwhile, aforementioned upstream short-wave will dig into the
upper Midwest/far western Great Lakes overnight before sliding
across the state on Friday. Bulk of snowfall with this system
comes Friday (see details below). However, initial warm advection
and upper level divergence forced snows will probably begin to
spread up into the CWA toward morning...after 09Z or so...and
there may also be some renewed lake enhanced snow showers over
Lake Michigan that gets pushed into the western parts of Mackinac
county. Snow accumulations through tonight still looking to be
light overall...half inch or less for most, perhaps an inch or two
in far western Mackinac county due to the lake convection
contribution.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow Friday and Friday
night...transitioning to lake convection Saturday.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Full-latitude long wave trough axis
bisects North America...with a couple of significant potential
vorticity anomalies digging down the west side of this trough.
Leading short wave trough was over the central Rockies...with a more
substantial wave (dynamic tropopause below 600mb) dropping into the
northern High Plains from Alberta.  While the lead feature will get
kicked northeast toward the upper Great Lakes Friday...it is the
latter wave that will be the predominant weather issue for the end
of the week as it swings across the midwest Friday and bring
substantial height falls (~ 160dm/12h) across Michigan.  Mid level
system has its sights set on developing a closed circulation as it
cross Lower Michigan Friday night before going negative tilt as it
swings into Quebec Saturday.  There is a follow-on Pacific-origin
short wave trough that gets sheared out as it approaches the state
Sunday.

At the surface...broad area of high pressure extends from Alberta/
Saskatchewan (where surface temperatures are in the single digits)
southeast into the midwest/Ohio Valley...with a weak (1027mb)
surface reflection of High Plains short wave trough over northeast
Montana. Easterly flow around the southern periphery of this
anticyclone suppressing better low level moisture down to the Gulf
Coast.  As height falls from High Plains short wave spread
east...surface pattern will respond with inverted troughing
developing early Friday from the Gulf Coast northward into the Great
Lakes region...eventually leading to cyclogenesis in the vicinity of
the lower Lakes with a surface low that lifts northward in the
vicinity of Lower Michigan Friday night with strong cyclonic flow
wrapping back across northern Michigan in the wake of this system
Saturday.  This looks to be short lived as a ridge of high pressure
builds into Michigan by Saturday evening.  On Sunday...though
overall pressure pattern is weak there may be some surface
reflection of sheared out short wave trough approaching the state.

Primary Forecast Concerns: First decent snowfall of the season on
tap for northern Michigan...and should be mostly ongoing at the
onset of the short term forecast Friday morning as upper dynamics
with approaching short wave trough combine with increasing isentropic
ascent along east side of developing inverted trough.  Expect snow
to persist through the day...and there is some potential for
enhancement off Lake Huron (though there may also be some precip
type issues...more on that below).  Dry slotting may be an issue
across central/southern Lower by Friday evening...with the focus for
precip likely shifting into eastern Upper/tip of the mitt counties
and precip letting up closer to Saginaw Bay.  Enhancement off
northern Lake Huron could likely still be an issue over far
southeast Upper and perhaps through the Straits region...enhanced by
convergence along trailing surface trough as surface low crosses
Georgian Bay.  As low level winds swing around to the west would
expect to see lake convection off Lake Michigan spread into
northwest Lower (initial convection could be briefly intense late
Friday afternoon).  Winds are expected to eventually become
northwest as surface trough drops into norther Lower...but not
certain about how organized lake convection will be (focused along
convergence axis rather than being banded?).  But deep moisture and
steep mid level lapse rates certainly suggest some lake squalls off
Lake Michigan can be pretty decent...just uncertain as to where the
best precip from this will focus.

As for 24 hour snowfall amounts ending 12z Saturday...tricky part
may be shallow surface based warm layer in easterly flow off a
warmer Lake Huron (water temperatures roughly in the 7-9C range).
Low level warming will be fighting against melting-induced
cooling...so magnitude of warm layer/depth may just be marginal for
all snow (or may be precip rate dependent with snow or rain
depending on how hard precipitation is falling).  This will also
impact snow-liquid ratios as well...although don't think they'll be
that great during the day (will be using roughly 10-15:1 during the
day...and more 14-18:1 Friday night as thermal profiles get colder).
So having said all that...currently have laid out 1-3 inch amounts
for Arenac/Iosco counties where SLR/p-type and length of event may
conspire to limit snowfall amounts here.  Inland from there have 3-5
inches from Gladwin/Ogemaw/Oscoda/Alcona/Alpena counties...a little
less right along the US-23 corridor given p-type concerns.  Rest of
northern Lower have 4-7 inches...and 5-9 inches across eastern Upper
where precip will hang on longest and potential enhancement off Lake
Huron impacting Drummond Island and eastern Mackinac/southeast
Chippewa Counties.  Will likely need Winter Weather Advisories for
just about all areas save perhaps Arenac/Iosco counties...though a
little concerned about other Lake Huron counties (at least
Alcona/Alpena) as would hate to have an WWA out if it ends up
raining for more of the afternoon.  So I plan to hold off on those
four counties in order to be sure that the precip type comes to pass.

Saturday will be cold and brisk with lake induced snow showers in
north/northwest flow...though thermodynamics start to wane Saturday
afternoon as low level flow becomes increasing anticyclonic.
Approach of next short wave for Sunday may bring another shot of
mostly light snow though southwest flow enhancement off Lake
Michigan will need to be watched.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Synoptic and lake effect snow
possible.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: The Great Lakes region will remain in
broad upper troughing and cold air through the forecast period. Long
range models agree on additional snowfall Sunday night through
Wednesday, although how much remains very uncertain due to model
differences on system location/track and wind direction being either
persistent or not at all for good lake effect production. 850mb
temperatures are progged to be -10 to -16C late Monday through
Wednesday.

The ECMWF develops a weak low pressure system passing over the upper
Great Lakes Sunday night and then another low pressure system over
the Ohio River Valley and tracks it to the southeast of Michigan
Tuesday. Both of these have the potential for bringing some synoptic
snow to the forecast area. Behind this second system there is some
lingering moisture and cold air for lake effect, although the winds
do not stay persistent, with a few different disturbances traversing
through northern Michigan...producing more transient bands. High
pressure and much drier air then build into northern Michigan
Thursday.

The GFS on the other hand develops a low pressure system over the
Great Lakes Sunday night producing synoptic snows and then
persistent northwesterly wind flow behind the departing system,
possibly producing lake effect snow Monday through Wednesday...until
surface high pressure and drier air build into the Great Lakes later
Wednesday.

As previously stated...this forecast is a ways out and will
inevitably change (possibly several times) in the next coming days.
Depending on what exactly happens will obviously have different
impacts and will have to be monitored and updated for changes.
Daytime temperatures will be well below normal for this time of the
year, only reaching into the upper 20s to mid 30s, while lows will
be in the upper teens to mid 20s.

VFR most of tonight, eventually becoming IFR Friday.

High pressure to our nw extends ridging into lower MI. Plenty of
lake-induced cloud cover, but this is primarily VFR, and will
remain that way until very late tonight. Low pressure will start
to gather in the OH Valley late tonight, and rapidly intensify as
it moves toward Lk Erie and Lk Huron Friday. Light snow will
gradually expand into northern MI Fri morning, and intensify as
the day proceeds (with eventually IFR vsbys). Snow will mix with
rain at times at APN. Expect snow-liquid ratios to range from 12:1
to 15:1.

Light winds tonight. Easterly winds Friday APN/PLN. Winds will
veer to the s, sw and nw at TVC/MBL as Friday proceeds.
