...Cold persists along with snow shower activity...

High Impact Weather Potential...More accumulating snowfall today
across parts of Chippewa County and "Big Six" northwest Lower
snowbelt counties.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: It's a cold start to 2018...but another
great example of the surrounding Great Lakes protecting northern
Michigan from widespread sub-zero chill that is "horseshoeing"
around much of the state...with some pockets of below zero
temperatures over eastern Lower Michigan early this morning.  Cold
air mass courtesy of a broad long wave trough over the eastern half
of North America...trough axis runs through the lower Great Lakes.
This is occurring downstream of a more defined +PNA ridge through
still some hints of split flow with what is effectively an Arctic
branch of the flow aimed into the Great Lakes region...with more of
a Pacific-origin branch coming out of the northern Rockies and into
the central Plains/mid Mississippi Valley.  Water vapor imagery
shows a couple of vorticity maxima within the Arctic branch dropping
south across Lake Superior early this morning...but in the wake of
these short wave troughs is some fairly strong 500mb warm advection
which suggests heights should be rising across the eastern Prairie
provinces/northern Ontario and adjacent areas of the upper
Midwest/upper Great Lakes starting today.  1050mb Arctic high
centered over the northern High Plains early this morning ridges
southeast to the Gulf Coast...and has spread sub-freezing
temperatures about as far south.  Sunday high temperatures did not
climb above zero across the northern High Plains/upper Midwest as
far south as portions of Nebraska/Iowa...and sub-500DM thicknesses
into Michigan are usually a harbinger of single digit high
temperatures away from the influence of the Great Lakes.  1026mb
mostly thermally induced low pressure center sits just to the east
of Lake Superior...trough axis hangs back to the west across the
Upper Peninsula and southeast across Lake Huron into far southern
Ontario.  Lake induced snow showers continue to pour in off Lakes
Superior/Michigan...mostly low grade stuff off Lake Michigan where
00z APX sounding pegged a decent inversion height around 750mb but
at a temperature of -30C which puts most of the cloud layer colder
than the DGZ.  A little warmer off eastern Lake Superior where
thermal ridging more pronounced along with stronger low level
frontogenesis/convergence focusing a stronger band of radar returns
into the Soo region.  A little synoptic forcing/moisture from
passing short wave troughs not hurting the cause either...which IR
imagery suggests should be moving east of the forecast area within
the next few hours.

Low to the east of Lake Superior will elongate/propagate southeast
today...leaving lake aggregate troughing hanging back to the
northwest into northern Lake Huron/far eastern Upper/eastern Lake
Superior.  Subtle issues with possible cold air draining off of the
Ontario plateau will have an impact on where subsequent convergence
axis sets up (which may have some impact on far northeast Lower later
today)...wind at ANJ has already veered 90 degrees between 07z-
08z (surface wind W to N). Deep layer warm advection pattern
develops today as thermal troughing pushes east along with rising
heights aloft. Secondary jet streak/dynamic PV anomaly will
approach the region from the north tonight...though main dynamic
forcing looks to be focused well to the northeast of Michigan.

Primary Forecast Concerns: First off...plan on dropping Wind Chill
Advisory as just not getting wind chills much below -15F so far
this morning. Will allow Winter Weather Advisory for Chippewa
County to expire at 12z as currently scheduled...with the
expectation that persistent snow showers around the Soo will shift
farther west this morning with onset of a more easterly low level
wind component with cold air draining out of Ontario. Expect snow
showers to continue around Whitefish Bay through the day...and
with convergence axis shifting west do expect some snow showers to
drop into western portions of Mackinac County as well. Winds are
expected to back more to the west tonight...which will push better
snow shower activity back toward far northern Chippewa
County...where additional snowfall of 4-5 inches today/tonight are
possible.

Across northern Lower...some interesting potential today as
inversion heights are forecast to drop with overall large scale
subsidence/height rises and warm advection...but as low level
profile begins to warm it will push cloud layer temperatures back
into a more favorable regime for dendritic growth. There will also
be a longer effective fetch as winds veer more to the northwest
and allow for more of a Lake Superior connection to develop (can
already see this occurring in IR imagery over Lake Superior). So
the concern is that there may be an uptick in snowfall intensity
later this morning into the afternoon...with some indications of
another 3-4+ inches possible along the US-131 corridor especially
across Antrim/Kalkaska counties (will depend on band persistence
as winds may be flopping around throughout the day).  So the
current Winter Weather advisory for northwest Lower "Big 6"
counties will be expanded through the afternoon...not so sure
about needing Leelanau County in this but they will be in on some
of this activity so no need to complicate things. Winds will back
more westerly this evening...cutting off the effective fetch along
with continued falling inversion heights. So expect snow shower
coverage and intensity to wane as the night wears on. Temperatures
not likely to go far today...with highs in the upper single digits
and lower teens expected much like Sunday.

High Impact Weather Potential: Another round of accumulating snow
arrives Tuesday night through Wednesday. Cold temperatures continue
area-wide with sub-zero wind chills at times.

Pattern Forecast: Broad large scale troughing continues across the
eastern two-thirds of the CONUS through the forecast period;
however, brief weak mid level ridging and warmer low-mid level temps
are anticipated across the Great Lakes on Tuesday ahead of a clipper
set to trek across the region Tuesday night into Wednesday. This
system will be making landfall across British Columbia early this
morning before quickly racing east-southeastward across
Saskatchewan/Manitoba during the day Tuesday and into the western
Great Lakes Tuesday night. As a result, a lull in lake effect snow
activity is anticipated on Tuesday, but not for long as more snow
spreads across the area Tuesday night through Wednesday.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges: Increasing snow chances and
amounts Tuesday night through Wednesday.

By Tuesday morning, not much in the way of sensible weather is
anticipated across the majority of the forecast area as any
appreciable moisture has stripped off to the east and H8 temps
continue to gradually moderate to roughly -12 C. As has been alluded
to the last couple of forecast cycles, the exception may lie across
far northern Chippewa County where deeper moisture hangs on just a
bit longer and H8 temps struggle to warm much past -17 C. Not a
whole lot of accumulation to speak of where it does continue to snow
however with new amounts likely around an inch or so.

Tightening pressure gradient across the region during the day
Tuesday will yield increasingly gusty W/WSW return flow ahead of the
aforementioned approaching mid-level wave. As a result, despite a
formidable surface temperature response with highs ranging from the
upper teens to low 20s, 20-30 mph wind gusts will keep wind chill
values between -5 to 5 F for many areas.

Snow chances increase once again Tuesday night as the next clipper
begins to cross the region. Expectation is that a little light WSW
flow lake effect may kick off as early as Tuesday evening with more
widespread light system snow spreading from northwest to southeast
across the remainder of the forecast area from midnight through the
pre-dawn hours Wednesday. Accumulating (and potentially heavy) lake
enhanced snow will be possible over northern parts of Chippewa
County and parts of northwest lower (especially west of US-131)
where low level convergence signals continue to be maximized.
Synoptic support gradually exits the area during the day Wednesday
with lingering precipitation becoming pure lake effect oriented,
especially across the typical NNW flow snow belts. All in all,
between Tuesday night through the daytime hours Wednesday, new snow
amounts are expected to vary greatly across the CWA with several
inches of new snow across northern Chippewa and along and west of US-
131 in northern lower...gradually tapering to an inch or two near
the I-75 corridor and generally less than an inch for points east of
there. In addition, gusty N/NW winds will create areas of blowing
snow and low visibility creating hazardous travel conditions in some
areas.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

High impact weather potential: Lake effect snow, hazardous travel
and dangerously cold wind chill temperatures Thursday and Friday
(record cold for highs and lows in some areas).

Renewed shot of Arctic air will be quickly to follow Wednesday's
departing system with the coldest air of the season (hard to believe
given the recent cold temps) set to arrive Wednesday night through
Saturday. H8 temps over the area progged to approach -25 to -28 C!
This will result in single digit daytime high temperatures with some
of the typically colder/interior spots perhaps remaining below zero.
Combined with even a little bit of wind and the possibility of wind
chill readings plummeting to -20 to -35 degrees exists Thursday
morning. No doubt north flow lake effect will be the rule through
this period, but as was alluded to by the prior shift, such cold
temperatures lends concern to cloud micro-physics and snowflake size
limiting overall accumulation.  With small snowflake size,
visibility may be quite low in some areas with hazardous travel
expected.   This is an extremely cold airmass and will likely
produce record low max temperatures and some record low
temperatures.   Would not be surprised to see some interior areas of
northern Michigan have low temperatures of -30 degrees (or colder)
during this time.

Some modification expected next weekend as the deep trough axis
gradually slides east. Temperatures climbing into the teens and
perhaps even some 20s in spots.&&

Lake effect snow showers will continue over northwest lower.
Primarily MVFR to VFR, although IFR conditions may occur under
heavier snow bands. Winds will remain west to northwest for most
