.SYNOPSIS...
Despite areas of stubborn clouds, quiet weather will
continue through the remainder of the overnight hours. As low
pressure develops off the mid-Atlantic coast, some light snow will
spread into the region later today. Periods of snow will continue
Monday night into Tuesday, with the heaviest totals across the
higher terrain of western New England. As the upper level storm
system is slow to depart, lingering light snow and flurries will
continue into the mid week period with daytime temperatures
generally below normal.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 127 AM EDT...Although high pressure is nosing into the
region from the Upper Great Lakes and southern Canada, IR
satellite imagery shows stubborn low-level moisture trapped
beneath an inversion is keeping mostly cloudy skies early this
morning across all of the region except for Ulster, Dutchess and
Litchfield Counties where it is currently clear. Where the
clouds are currently in place, clouds should continue through
much of the remainder of the overnight hours. These clouds may
keep min temps up a little bit in some areas, with lows
generally expected to range from the mid-teens in the
Adirondacks to the upper 20s in southern areas.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Winter Storm Watch posted from 8 pm MON to 6 pm TUE for
western New England...
A southern stream upper level trough will be moving over the
Southeast and FL Monday morning. A northern stream upper level
short-wave trough will be digging south to southeast from
southern Ontario/eastern Manitoba and the Great Lakes Region.
High pressure will shift offshore during the morning, as low
pressure organizes near SC/NC. In the southwest flow aloft mid
and high clouds will be streaming in based on the 12Z
EC/GFS/GEFS mean and NAM. The trend will be for these increasing
clouds,and light snow to break out especially in the mid to
late pm south and west of the Capital Region, as the northern
stream upper level trough begins to interact with the southern
stream disturbance. Weak isentropic lift on the 285K sfc
increases. Any light snowfall by 7-8 pm will amount to a coating
to a few tenths of an inch with the highest amounts over the
eastern Catskills with a half an inch or so possible. Max temps
were lowered a bit by 3 degrees from a blend of the guidance
with mid to upper 30s in the valleys, and 20s to mid 30s over
the hills and mtns.
Monday Night...A north and westward trend in the majority of the
guidance continues with the oceanic cyclone forming about
250-300 miles south and east of Long Island Mon night, as the
upper level trough becomes negatively tilted. The 12Z ECMWF is a
bit further south and east this cycle compared to the
NAM/GFS/CMC/GEFS mean, but it would still give a shot of snow
with the cyclonic vorticity advection with the northern stream
short-wave and associated upper low. Despite this slightly
further south and east evolution, enough Atlantic moisture will
be advected northward to impact at least western New England
with the potential of warning level snowfall late Monday night
into Tuesday morning. 6" or more in 12-hrs time period hits
warning criteria, and we are at least 50% confident reaching
these amounts in a 12-hr window from 8 pm Mon to 6 pm TUE. The
morning commute could be messy. Our confidence was not as great
hitting potential warning criteria of 7"/12-hrs in eastern NY
yet. Thanks for the excellent collab with WFOs BOX, OKX, GYX. We
may hit advisory criteria late Monday night into Tuesday, but
we did not want to commit yet, and most of the impacts would be
in the 3rd to 4th period (we typically issue advisories in the
first two periods). There continues to be enough spread in the
guidance. 2-4" of snow is possible across eastern NY by 8 am TUE
with 3-6" over western New England. The early morning commute
will likely be slippery and problematic. Lows will be in the
20s, and snow to liquid ratios will likely be in the 12-15:1
range.
Tuesday...The low-level GEFS -U component of the winds or
easterlies crank up to 3 to 5 standard deviations above over
eastern NY and New England. Strong synoptic QG lift continues
with the H500 upper level low over the eastern Great Lakes
Region and western NY trying to capture the ocean cyclone going
through rapid cyclogenesis. The best H850-700 FGEN or deeper
H850-500 FGEN stays south and east of western New England, but a
pivoting band may nudge into western New England in the late
morning into the early afternoon with snow rates increasing to
an inch or so in an hour /conceptual model form Kenyon CSTAR
research/. The best chance of potentially 6-10" of snow will be
across western New England, with perhaps 4-8" total further west
by the early evening TUE. Again, we may need advisories for a
chunk of eastern NY if these totals hold /6-8" in 12-hrs/.
Highs TUE will be in the mid 20s to lower 30s over the higher
terrain, and 30s in the valleys.
Tuesday night...The oceanic cyclone continues to bomb out and
deepen potentially to a sub-970 hPa low as it moves towards Nova
Scotia. Mid and upper deformation snowfall continues especially
for the Capital Region, northern Catskills, and Berkshires north
and west with additional snowfall amounts of 2 to 5" possible.
The H500 circulation sits and spins over NY and New England most
of the night with the cyclonic vorticity advection continue to
focus light snow and snow showers. Some orographic enhancement
is possible along the western spine of the Taconics, southern
Greens, and Adirondacks. Lows fall into the teens and 20s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
We start the period with an intense surface low pressure over the
Canadian Maritimes. Aloft a deep closed low over the region starts
to pull north and east on Wednesday. Under the influence of moist
cyclonic flow, snow continues on Wednesday. The heaviest snow will
occur in favored upslope areas of the southern Greens, western
Adirondacks, and Catskills. Several additional inches of snow are
likely in these areas. In valley locations snowfall will be lighter
so accumulations there will be limited. Temperatures will run 5-10
degrees below normal.
Although the upper low continues to transit into eastern Canada, a
mean upper trough continues over the northeast U.S. into Friday.
This keeps blustery, cloudy conditions in place through the end of
the work week. Snow chances will diminish with upslope locations
still the preferred areas for snowfall. Temperatures will average
around 10 degrees below normal.
Weak high pressure builds in for Friday night allowing for a clear
cold night.
Models diverge on Saturday, with the GFS pushing a warm front toward
the CWA bringing chances of showers. On the other hand, the ECMWF
continues with cold high pressure dominating. The GFS offers some
warmer weather, while the ECMWF continues with below normal
temperatures. Have played this with low chance POPS for Saturday.
The forecast leans toward the warmer GFS for temperatures Saturday
and Sunday.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Enhanced GOES-16 nighttime microphysics imagery reveals ample
stratus across most of the region with clear skies at KPOU. The
ceilings at KALB-KPSF-KGFL were VFR as this should remain overnight.
There could be some breaks in the overcast approaching KPSF
overnight.
Then the canopy of higher clouds, CI/CS, will thicken up the sky and
what stratus lingers will become trapped keeping those clouds likely
in place. In fact, these clouds will likely spread through the
afternoon as coastal storm begins to take shape. Some light snow is
expected by late this afternoon with potential for MVFR conditions
toward sunset.
Winds will generally be light and variable for Hudson River Valley
locations with a westerly wind component at KPSF with magnitudes
6kts or less. Those winds will become northerly through the
daylight hours Monday.

Liquid equivalent precipitation forecasts Monday afternoon until
Wednesday morning will be about a half an inch to three quarters
of an inch with locally higher amounts possible over western New
England. Additional light QPF is possible Wednesday into
Thursday with the upper low.
Slow melting of the snowpack during the day, with freeze up at
night is expected for much of the week where temps rise into the
mid 30s to lower 40s. Only minor changes in river stages are
forecast during the next several days.
