.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful coastal storm will develop and impact the region
tonight through Friday. Precipitation will overspread the region
and depending on temperatures, significant snow across portions
of the higher terrain to a rain and snow mixture elsewhere.
Strong winds will also occur with this storm which could linger
into the weekend as drier conditions return.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 330 AM EST, As we welcome the start of March 2018, a
cold front will cross the region and clear the I84 corridor
around the 12Z timeframe per the HRRR/RAP and linear
extrapolation from its current forward progression. Temperatures
behind this boundary have dipped to near freezing. However, as
cold advection is not terribly too strong, and given a
relatively mild start across the region, partial sunshine should
allow for temperatures to climb to around 50F in valley
locations with mainly 40s elsewhere. As short wave ridging and
anticyclonic surface flow will remain across the region through
the balance of the day, we will delay the onset of precipitation
until after sundown.

As we are within 48hrs of this upcoming event, still some
discrepancy with all available guidance this morning. This is
especially true with thermal profiles across the county warning
area. Combination of being within the baroclinic zone, wet bulb
processes and cold advection will make for a challenging
precip-type as this will be a mainly rain/snow event. Extensive
collaboration with neighboring offices and WPC this morning as
we thank everyone for the transparency in communications this
morning.

Confidence is high that a potent coastal storm will develop over
the western Atlantic as strong pv-anomaly currently over the
center of the nation tracks across the Ohio Valley. As seen in
the H2O vapor loop, rather strong mid to upper level jet was
progressing across the mid-Mississippi River Valley into the
Ohio Valley with magnitudes over 150kts. Enhanced GOES-16 IR
imagery suggests a baroclinic leaf was developing which will
enhance precipitation influences downstream. Per the hi-res
reflectivity forecasts, the leading edge of the precipitation
should arrive across the southwest portions of the forecast area
(Catskills) after 22Z. As for precipitation types, initially
should be mainly rain as thermal profiles appear to be mild
enough, even with wet-bulb processes taken into consideration.
Later tonight, that does change as coastal low becomes
increasingly dominate allowing for cold advection to move
southward along with wet bulb process to transition to mainly
snow across the higher terrain and a rain/snow mixture for
valley locations. The valley locations will need to be monitored
very closely as there is not much margin for error as NAM3km
points toward a more rapid snow process than the ECMWF.
Regardless, precipitation rates will increase overnight as
impressive H850 u-component values from the GEFS exceed 5
standard deviations with an elongated fetch from the western
Atlantic into western NY. Those anomalies increase and focus
more into eastern NY during Friday. As coastal low becomes a
near meteorological bomb through the daylight hours, this too
will assist with further cooling of the column as we watch the
snow levels drop. As low level flow magnitudes increase from the
east then northeast, portions of the Catskills will have a
prolonged period of upslope during a time when thermal profiles
are cooling. Its these areas we have high confidence of a
significant snowfall where we will place Winter Storm Warnings.
For the Mohawk Valley into the Adirondacks, still some question
on precipitation amounts (especially into the Mohawk Valley)
as seen in the QPF fields where variable remains and thermal
profiles where we will keep the watch in place. Where we will
expand the watch is into the southern Greens and Berks as the
higher terrain and lower thresholds (6"/12hrs) along with
coordination efforts at this time.

By late Friday afternoon into Friday evening, thermal profiles
continue to cool as we should see a transition to mainly snow
across most of the region. At this time, the coastal low is
filling as it tracks slowly east and southeast. QPF begins to
lower as valley snow accumulations appear to be at or below
advisory thresholds at this time. The main hazard will be in the
increasing wind magnitudes as areas in the Hudson River Valley
and areas along and south of I90 will have the potential to
experience wind gusts at or above 40kts. Per close coordination,
no wind headlines at this time but will be closely monitored for
possible headlines later today. As for snow, most of the snow
should be ending toward midnight with a deformation band over
the western zones or along the I81 corridor. Temperatures will
dip back to between 25-35F for most areas.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
In the wake of the departing storm system, still some upper level
energy/moisture translating southeast across the region which could
lead to scattered rain or snow showers, with best chances across
upslope areas of southern VT. It will remain windy, with some gusts
of 30-40 mph possible, esp in the afternoon with deeper mixing.
Afternoon high temps should reach the lower/mid 40s in valleys, with
mainly 30s across higher terrain. Lingering rain/snow showers should
decrease in areal coverage Saturday night, with lows mainly ranging
from the mid 20s to lower 30s.

For Sunday-Monday night, a low level ridge axis from the Great Lakes
through the OH/TN Valleys slowly builds east and the pressure
gradient between it and the departing ocean storm will keep north
winds and some cold advection in our region, but the winds will be
weakening. Still, the mean upper trough axis is offshore with a
sharp upper ridge axis west but there is blocking in the upper
pattern.  There is some degree of a consensus of one last piece of
upper energy diving south out of Canada Sunday and Sunday night
through the northeastern U.S., but there is little moisture
associated with it and will get entrained in the circulation well
offshore. Will keep some mention of snow showers across higher
terrain areas of southern VT/western MA as the aforementioned upper
level energy translates through the region.

Model consensus suggests a weakening upper level impulse approaches
from the west later Tuesday, bringing some afternoon clouds and
perhaps some rain/snow showers. A more potent upper level
disturbance may approach from the west/southwest Tuesday night and
Wednesday, which could allow a surface low to develop along or off
the mid Atlantic coast. How fast and close to the coast any such low
develops, would determine how far north and west any steadier
precipitation can build into the region during Wednesday. For now,
have incorporated a blended model approach with chance Pops
indicated Wednesday. Marginally cold air in the low/mid levels of
the atmosphere could create another elevation dependent rain vs snow
situation as well, so once again, trends will need to be watched as
we get closer to this time frame for possible impacts.

Highs Sunday through Tuesday in the lower to mid 40s valleys with
mid 30s to around 40 across higher terrain. Highs Wednesday around
40 to lower 40s but 30s across higher terrain, with the potential
for even colder temperatures for all areas if a storm system tracks
closer to the coast and brings more widespread precipitation.

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A weak cold front will settle southward today, accompanied by
some clouds and a wind shift. Developing low pressure over the
Ohio Valley region will track east northeast toward the northern
mid Atlantic states through Thursday night.

Mainly VFR conditions are expected through at least 02Z/Fri.
However, some patches of lower clouds associated with the cold
front may lead to some areas of MVFR Cigs, particularly at KPSF
between 10Z-15Z/Thu.

Precipitation associated with the developing storm system should
slowly overspread the TAF sites between roughly 03Z-06Z/Fri.
Most areas should be in the form of rain, but a rain/snow mix
could occur at KGFL at precipitation onset. MVFR conditions will
become possible shortly after the precipitation develops.

Winds will be south to southwest at 5 KT or less tonight but
calm at times at KGFL and KPOU. Winds become north to northeast
at less than 10 KT after 13Z and continue through Thursday
afternoon. Northeast to east winds will increase to 8-12 KT with
some gusts of 15-20 KT possible

.HYDROLOGY...
A moderate to heavy precipitation event is becoming apparent
for tonight through Friday night as a storm system impacts the
region. There is still much uncertainty as to precipitation
amounts and types. It appears that higher elevations may have
the greatest chances of significant snow which includes the
Catskills and Schoharie Valley.

With a storm tracking nearby, the threat for higher rainfall
amounts exceeding in excess of one inch has increased across
the region. Latest MMEFS (from the GEFS) suggests a few points
in the western Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley could exceed action
stage, and even reach Flood Stage if enough QPF falls as plain
rain. If more snow occurs across higher terrain, which is
currently forecast, this potential would be less, but there
still could be runoff which could lead to some urban and small
stream flooding. The higher potential will be across Dutchess
and Litchfield Counties where MMEFS suggests the Housatonic
River will exceed minor flood stage and near the mid-Hudson.
This is where the flood watch will remain in effect.

A large coastal storm will bring periods of rain to the area Thursday
night through Friday. The rain may mix with snow at times, especially
